We will produce the heart of our engine that fulfills a key, functional role. The LDS technology is the process of spraying a metal alloy on a suitably pre- pared surface of the cylinder of an aluminum engine block with precision processing of this surface after the spraying process. The technology significantly reduces resistance, friction and weight. What is more, a surface prepared in this way dramatically affects 4 | OUR INTERVIEW MERCEDES-BENZ MANUFACTURING POLAND

Its quality is confirmed by the process parameters and control plan, in which the most important elements are tests for adhesion, roughness and coating thickness.

What is the biggest challenge in LDS technology?

Here, basically, everything is a challenge, we are talking about micrometers. Each process has a sig- nificant impact on the quality of the coating. On the basis of previous experience, it can be said that for the mentioned NMRP process, due to the dedicated tool with a very small radius, the type and quality of the cast will be the key. The guarantee of quality is through the right profile after processing and cleaning while maintaining the correct LDS parameters. It must be remembered that despite very precisely defined process parameters, honing is very sensitive to all kinds of changes and requires a lot of experience. Cabins ready for testing!

In August last year, three large cabins for hot testing reached the factory in Jawor. The devices will allow for a thorough check of all parameters of engines that slide off the Mercedes-Benz factory production lines. Over the past few months, work on this installation has just been completed. Electrical wiring, water and air supply were connected. Four large tanks were also prepared, each of which can hold 25,000 liters of fuel. At that time, crew training was also underway - the employees learned how to properly assemble the engines and perform tests in the cabins. Most impor- tantly, the first engine was installed and started in the device! The entire installation was successful - the engine was fully operational.
