Since the last issue of the Newsletter the Society has been much involved with a wide range of issues including the conclusion of the Great Debate, the Council’s consultations with the public on the Core Strategy document setting out the future development of the town, Peter Prior’s proposals for turning the York Stream into a navigable waterway and the St. Regis’ Paper Company’s review of the future of the area on the Bucks bank of the Thames owned by them. In addition there have been all the ongoing activities involved in selecting and scanning development applications although here the pressure has been relieved for the time being by the Council’s moratorium on large-scale developments. Then there is Crossrail where we wait to see if the Society will be called in front of the Select Committee examining the petitions submitted. Also a new initiative has been undertaken by a group of the Executive Committee to develop a more cohesive and attractive programme of events through the year. One idea is that we could then, at six-monthly intervals, launch each half-year programme with a social event for members.
