South Bucks Councillor Update Economic Profile of Burnham Beeches Ward April 2014 Produced by Buckinghamshire Business First’s research department P a g e | 2 1.0 Introduction Burnham Beeches is home to 1,310 people and provides 700 jobs in 31 businesses. Of these businesses, seven (22.6 per cent) are Buckinghamshire Business First members. There were 934 employed people aged 16-74 living in Burnham Beeches ward at the 2011 Census, two more than the 932 recorded in 2001. Over that period the working age population fell 54 to 752 while the total population rose 51 to 1,310. The number of households fell by eight (1.6 per cent) to 486. This significant percentage decrease marks the largest fall out of all wards in South Bucks. The ward experienced the eighth largest decrease out of all wards in Buckinghamshire. The largest companies in Burnham Beeches include: Interpub; Burnham Beeches Hotel; Automobile Marketing Systems Ltd; Orb Data Ltd; S4 Personnel Ltd; South Bucks Bridge Centre; and Tudor Barn. There are five Burnham Beeches, representing 0.6 per cent of working age residents, including five claimants who have been claiming for less than six months. Superfast broadband is expected to be available to 91 per cent of premises in the Burnham Beeches ward by March 2016 with commercial providers responsible for the full 91 per cent. The Connected Counties project, run by BBF, will therefore deliver no superfast connectivity due to sufficient cover by commercial suppliers. BBF is seeking to deliver an extended superfast footprint via additional funding, adaptation of downstream technology and contract claw-back mechanism. At the time of the 2001 Censusi, of the 629 employed residents, 183 people lived and worked in the ward, with the most common destinations by local authority district being: South Bucks (262, 41.7 per cent) Slough (93, 14.8) Hillingdon (46, 7.2) Windsor and Maidenhead (44, 7.0) Wycombe (39, 6.2) Westminster, City of (10, 1.6) City of London (9, 1.4) Ealing (9, 1.4) P a g e | 3 2.0 Industrial structure There are 31 businesses located in Burnham Beeches employing 700 people. Of these businesses, 26 are micro businesses, employing fewer than 10 people. Burnham Beeches is over-represented in Property which covers 10.0 per cent of employment ranking the ward 143rd out of all wards. Construction covers 12.5 per cent of employment and information & communication covers 10.7 per cent of employment. Based on these proportions, the ward is ranked 1,115th and 322nd out of all wards respectively. Finally, professional, scientific and technical accounts for 18.8 per cent of employment ranking 348th out of all wards. Manufacturing accounts for only 2.0 per cent of employment ranking the ward 5,837th out of all wards. Retail makes up just 1.1 per cent of employment and as a result the ward is ranked 8,203rd out of all wards. Transport & storage contributes to 0.1 per cent of employment ranking 7,769th out of all wards for employment in the sector. P a g e | 4 2.1 The Industrial Strategy and the Plan for Growth Plan for Growth and the Industrial Strategy set out policies to realise this objective and to rebalance the economy, which include focusing on sectors expected to deliver strong growth. South Bucks -represented in these sectors, particularly aerospace, the information economy and professional and business services. While Burnham Beeches provides jobs in these sectors, the industrial strategy sector where the ward delivers the highest share of national employment is professional & business services which accounts for 19.5 per cent of employment, ranking Burnham Beeches at 656th among English wards. The proportions of jobs in Burnham Beeches in Industrial Strategy sectors are presented in Table 1. Burnham Beeches has a proportion of 41.3 per cent of its residents qualified to degree level or higher. Furthermore, 64.9 per cent work in managerial, professional or technical occupations. In South Bucks the wards most similar to Burnham Beeches are Gerrards Cross North, Beaconsfield North and Hedgerley & Fulmer with seven of the other 27 wards among the top thousand closest matches. The least similar ward in the district is Burnham Lent Rise, the only ward in South Bucks to rank lower than the 4,000th closest match. Furthermore, as stated previously, the ward has a high level of those educated to degree level or higher and those working in managerial, professional and technical roles ranking in the top quartile for both. Burnham Beeches looks to have an above average employment rate and a very low level of working age residents. In contrast Burnham Beeches ranks in the bottom quartile for other occupations, with only 4.7 per cent of working residents employed in elementary occupations. Skilled trades occupations service occupations Source: Census, ONS, 2011 5.0 Deprivation Buckinghamshire has the lowest level of economic deprivation of any Local Enterprise Partnership, with South Bucks having the 13th lowest economic deprivation of all 326 local authority districts in England, behind South Bucks (10th) but ahead of Aylesbury (37th) and Wycombe (69th). Chart 4 demonstrates the concentration of South Bucks the least deprived in England with 8 of the 19 wards featuring among the least deprived 10 per cent of all wards in England and none falling below the sixth most deprived ranking among the most deprived half of English wards, a stark contrast to the London Borough of Newham where no ward ranks above halfway, highlighting the challenge South Bucks faces to attract resources to tackle deprivation. P a g e | 7 Burnham Beeches has the 404th lowest economic deprivation of the 7,707 wards in England and the sixth least economically deprived of the 19 South Bucks wards. Burnham Beeches is the 26th least economically deprived among the 108 wards in Buckinghamshire. The position of South Bucks ds in England is shown in Chart 4 below, with Burnham Beeches one of the eight least deprived decile. Nationally, the closest matches are Tastsfield & Titsey (Tanbridge), South Weald (Brentwood) and Horton & Wraysbury (Windsor & Maidenhead) while Taplow and Hedgerley & Fulmer are the most similar in South Bucks ranking as the second and eighth most similar of all English wards.
