1.0 Introduction

Burnham Beeches is home to 1,310 people and provides 700 jobs in 31 businesses. Of these businesses, seven (22.6 per cent) are Buckinghamshire Business First members.

There were 934 employed people aged 16-74 living in Burnham Beeches ward at the 2011 Census, two more than the 932 recorded in 2001. Over that period the working age population fell 54 to 752 while the total population rose 51 to 1,310. The number of households fell by eight (1.6 per cent) to 486. This significant percentage decrease marks the largest fall out of all wards in . The ward experienced the eighth largest decrease out of all wards in Buckinghamshire.

The largest companies in Burnham Beeches include:

 Interpub;  Burnham Beeches Hotel;  Automobile Marketing Systems Ltd;  Orb Data Ltd;  S4 Personnel Ltd;  South Bucks Bridge Centre; and  Tudor Barn.

There are five Burnham Beeches, representing 0.6 per cent of working age residents, including five claimants who have been claiming for less than six months.

Superfast broadband is expected to be available to 91 per cent of premises in the Burnham Beeches ward by March 2016 with commercial providers responsible for the full 91 per cent. The Connected Counties project, run by BBF, will therefore deliver no superfast connectivity due to sufficient cover by commercial suppliers. BBF is seeking to deliver an extended superfast footprint via additional funding, adaptation of downstream technology and contract claw-back mechanism.

At the time of the 2001 Censusi, of the 629 employed residents, 183 people lived and worked in the ward, with the most common destinations by local authority district being:

2.0 Industrial structure

There are 31 businesses located in Burnham Beeches employing 700 people. Of these businesses, 26 are micro businesses, employing fewer than 10 people.

Burnham Beeches is over-represented in Property which covers 10.0 per cent of employment ranking the ward 143rd out of all wards. Construction covers 12.5 per cent of employment and information & communication covers 10.7 per cent of employment. Based on these proportions, the ward is ranked 1,115th and 322nd out of all wards respectively. Finally, professional, scientific and technical accounts for 18.8 per cent of employment ranking 348th out of all wards.

Burnham Beeches is under-represented in a number of sectors including; manufacturing; retail; transport & storage; financial & insurance; business administration & support; and health. Manufacturing accounts for only 2.0 per cent of employment ranking the ward 5,837th out of all wards. Retail makes up just 1.1 per cent of employment and as a result the ward is ranked 8,203rd out of all wards. Transport & storage contributes to 0.1 per cent of employment ranking 7,769th out of all wards for employment in the sector.

2.1 The Industrial Strategy and the Plan for Growth

Plan for Growth and the Industrial Strategy set out policies to realise this objective and to rebalance the economy, which include focusing on sectors expected to deliver strong growth. South Bucks -represented in these sectors, particularly aerospace, the information economy and professional and business services.

While Burnham Beeches provides jobs in these sectors, the industrial strategy sector where the ward delivers the highest share of national employment is professional & business services which accounts for 19.5 per cent of employment, ranking Burnham Beeches at 656th among English wards. The proportions of jobs in Burnham Beeches in Industrial Strategy sectors are presented in Table 1.

At 10.2 per cent, the proportion of Burnham Beeches jobs in the construction sector is the 1,252nd highest of all wards in England, the proportion is above that of both the country level and the district level.

3.0 Labour market

At 64.1 per cent of 16-74 year olds, Burnham Beeches employment rate is among the second highest quartile of wards in the country. Burnham Beeches has a proportion of 41.3 per cent of its residents qualified to degree level or higher. Furthermore, 64.9 per cent work in managerial, professional or technical occupations.

In South Bucks the wards most similar to Burnham Beeches are North, North and & with seven of the other 27 wards among the top thousand closest matches. The least similar ward in the district is Burnham Lent Rise, the only ward in South Bucks to rank lower than the 4,000th closest match.

Burnham Beeches has a high level of those who work from home and of those who are self-employed. Furthermore, as stated previously, the ward has a high level of those educated to degree level or higher and those working in managerial, professional and technical roles ranking in the top quartile for both. Burnham Beeches looks to have an above average employment rate and a very low level of working age residents.

4.0 Occupational Structure

Burnham occupational structure is skewed towards the higher skilled and better remunerated occupations, with 64.9 per cent of working residents employed in managerial, professional and technical occupations, ranking in the top quartile nationally for each. In contrast Burnham Beeches ranks in the bottom quartile for other occupations, with only 4.7 per cent of working residents employed in elementary occupations.

5.0 Deprivation

Buckinghamshire has the lowest level of economic deprivation of any Local Enterprise Partnership, with South Bucks having the 13th lowest economic deprivation of all 326 local authority districts in England, behind South Bucks (10th) but ahead of Aylesbury (37th) and Wycombe (69th). Chart 4 demonstrates the concentration of South Bucks the least deprived in England with 8 of the 19 wards featuring among the least deprived 10 per cent of all wards in England and none falling below the sixth most deprived ranking among the most deprived half of English wards, a stark contrast to the London Borough of Newham where no ward ranks above halfway, highlighting the challenge South Bucks faces to attract resources to tackle deprivation.

Burnham Beeches has the 404th lowest economic deprivation of the 7,707 wards in England and the sixth least economically deprived of the 19 South Bucks wards. Burnham Beeches is the 26th least economically deprived among the 108 wards in Buckinghamshire. The position of South Bucks ds in England is shown in Chart 4 below, with Burnham Beeches one of the eight least deprived decile.

Burnham Beeches ranks 5,540th out of all wards in England based on the Index of Multiple Deprivationii; this makes it among the less deprived wards in England, below South Bucks average rank of 6,084th, demonstrating that the ward is more deprived than the district as a whole.

The wards in South Bucks most closely matching Burnham Beeches deprivation profile are presented in Table 3. Nationally, the closest matches are Tastsfield & Titsey (Tanbridge), South Weald (Brentwood) and Horton & Wraysbury (Windsor & Maidenhead) while and Hedgerley & Fulmer are the most similar in South Bucks ranking as the second and eighth most similar of all English wards. Of the 25 South Bucks wards 16 are among the 1,000 best matches, however Burnham Lent Rise is only the 1,749th closest match.

6.0 Demography

At 46.0 years, Burnham average age is above the 39.4 recorded across South Bucks as well as the county average of 41.0. This makes Burnham Beeches one of the older wards in England as suggested by the over-representation of 45+ year olds in Chart 6. In terms of age structure, two of the wards in South Bucks most similar to Burnham Beeches are Denham North and Gerrards Cross North with average ages of 48.4 and 45.0 respectively.

Burnham Beeches has a lower proportion of working age residents than South Bucks at 57.4 per cent. This ranks Burnham Beeches at 7,160th of all wards in England based on proportion of residents at working age. Burnham Beeches has a high proportion of those aged 65+ at 26.0 per cent. This ranks Burnham Beeches at 673rd of all wards in England putting it among the highest decile of all wards in England for this age bracket.

7.0 Educational attainment

South Bucks is one of the best qualified places in the country, with only 16.2 per cent of residents aged 16 and over holding no qualifications, well below the 22.5 per cent recorded across the country as a whole, while 37.5 per cent hold degree level qualifications, well above the national level of 27.4 per cent.

Burnham overall, with only 14.1 per cent having no qualifications and 41.3 per cent educated to degree level or higher. There is a total of 2.1 per cent of Burnham Beeches residents who are schoolchildren or full-time students aged 16 to 17. This is high in comparison to other wards in South Bucks as well as other wards across England. compared to all wards in England is presented in Chart 7 below.

Burnham Beeches is most similar to Redhill East (Reigate and Banstead), Haywards Heath (Mid Sussex) and Craven (Vale of White Horse) of all English wards with regard to educational attainment. In the district the most similar wards are Hedgerley & Fulmer, Stoke Poges and Dorney & Burnham South with four of the other 25 wards ranking inside the top 1000 matches but with Iver Heath ranking outside the top 6,000.

7.1 Burnham Beeches

Buckinghamshire has the strongest schools performance any LEPiii, with over a quarter of

and 88.0 per cent of young people in the county achieving at least NVQ level 2 by 19. Burnham Beeches schools make a full contribution to that performance as demonstrated by their most recent OFSTED reports, which are summarised below.

7.2 Dropmore Infant School (Key Stage 1)

In 2013, 88 per cent of pupils attained Level 2 or above in the Key Stage 1 reading test and assessment. This is a decrease of seven percentage points placing the school in the bottom 40 per cent of all schools. In writing, 81 per cent of pupils attained Level 2 or above, a decrease of 14 percentage points placing the school in the lowest 40 per cent of all schools. In 2013, 94 per cent of pupils attained Level 2 or higher in the Key Stage 1 test and assessment, a decrease of one percentage point placing the school in the middle 20 per cent of all schools. The attendance rate at the school was 96.1 per cent, the attendance rate has decreased by 0.5 percentage points since 2012 placing the school in the top 20 per cent of all schools.

8.0 Buckinghamshire Business First in Burnham Beeches
