The simplest form of flexible coupling for transmitting rotary movement is shown above. The Metalastik rubber-to-metal weld permits the transmission of heavy loads, with a torsional cushioning effect which extends over an appreciable angle. Note the ‘V ’ section which gives uniform stress.

These couplings are used for many purposes and can be supplied with natural or synthetic rubber of various degrees of flexibility; and in any ordinary metals, including light alloys.

Other Metalastik couplings shown are — on the left, the'ZPU’ type; on the right, the 'Z V S', both have vanes which give a positive drive beyond a certain deflection and are capable of accommodating angular and parallel mis-allgnment.

All these patent couplings are of great value in damping out torsional vibrations, in fact many of them are used expressly for this purpose where all other expedients have failed.

Later, a Wing Commander, after inspecting the havoc, wrote: 6 No attempt had as yet been made to tidy up the wreckage .... I found a pile of these batteries (NIFE). The wooden crates, insulators and stoppers were burnt right out, but the cases had not been distorted and the steel plates seemed to be still pretty good. . . . The main assembly is self-contained and is provided with skids to facilitate its dis­ posal near a suitable steam and cooling water supply. A complete set is shown in Fig. 1, where, with its foundation structure, it is being hoisted by crane. This structure is of fabricated mild steel plate and though light, is extremely rigid and free from resonant vibration.
