Fazit • der Anteil marktfähiger Nachkommen von „alten“ Apfelsorten ist deutlich geringer als bei anderen Sorten (z.B. Standardsorten) • diese Aussage bezieht sich nur auf die hier vorgestellten Kreuzungen mit den „alten“ Apfelsorten: ‘Dülmener‘, ‘Finkenwerder‘, ‘Horneburger‘ und ‘Rote Sternrenette‘ • durch eine deutliche Steigerung der Zahl der Nachkommen „alter“ Apfelsorten könnte die Wahrscheinlichkeit steigen, marktfähige Klone zu finden • dieser Aufwand übersteigt aber die finanziellen Möglichkeiten der ZIN 25 Vielen Dank! 26.

A choice seedling, Aerlie Red Flesh has a beautiful yellow skin with pale whitish dots, but it is inside that it excels. Deep rose red flesh, juicy, crisp, hard, sugary and richly flavored, ripening late (October) and keeping throughout the winter. The late Conrad Gemmer, an astute observer of apples with 500 varieties in his collection, rated Hidden Rose an outstanding variety of top quality.

ISSN 1652-6880, ISBN 91-576-7084-6 To increase apple production in Sweden and to improve apple quality and competitive edge on the market, solutions to negative problems such as bruising susceptibility, decay and weak storage potential have to be discovered. This thesis investigated problems relating to apple quality and storability, based on the results of field and laboratory experiments conducted in Kivik, Sweden, during a period of 12 years. Four cultivars (Aroma, Ingrid Marie, Cox’s Orange Pippin, and Katja) were predominantly used for the investigations. The cultivar Aroma showed the highest internal phenol content and was the most sensitive to bruising, followed by cv. Ingrid Marie. Enhancement of water loss and melting of skin wax by air pre-cooling or post-harvest heating decreased the incidence of bruising.

Pedigrees of apple (Malus ×domestica Borkh.) cultivars were used to study worldwide genetic diversity among clones used in modern apple breeding. The most frequent founding clones were ‘Cox’s Orange Pippin’, ‘Golden Delicious’, ‘Red Delicious’, ‘Jonathan’, and ‘McIntosh’. Coefficients of coancestry between 50 mainstream cultivars and these clones averaged 0.03, 0.12, 0.07, 0.06, and 0.02, respectively, but they were frequently as high as 0.25 with certain pairings. Among a group of 27 cultivars carrying the Vf gene for scab resistance, coefficients of coancestry with the five founding clones were of the same order. Although few of the cultivars sampled were substantially inbred, inbreeding could reach serious levels in their future offspring if current breeding practices are continued. The status effective number was 8 for the mainstream group and 7 for the Vf-carrier clones. This indicates clearly that apple breeders are operating with a population of greatly reduced genetic diversity. Careful consideration of pedigrees and increased size of the genetic base are needed in future apple breeding strategies.
