John William Miller and Josiah Royce
Idealist Affinities: John William Miller and Josiah Royce By Mark D. Moorman [Posted with permission of Mark D. Moorman. Presented at the 39th annual meeting of the Society for the Advancement of American Philosophy, New York City, March 15-17, 2012.] This paper will compare the philosophies of John William Miller and Josiah Royce with regard to philosophical idealism. We hope to highlight the idealist strain in Miller’s thought by showing some affinities with similar themes in Royce. The relaxed term “affinity” suits the vagaries of the term “idealism” itself.(1) Royce was well aware of this malleable breadth. Post-Kantian idealism, viewed in its whole range of manifestation, is not any one theory so much as a tendency, a spirit, a disposition to interpret life and human nature and the world in a certain general way—a tendency, meanwhile, so plastic, so manifold, so lively, as to be capable of appealing to extremely different minds, and of expressing itself in numerous hostile teachings.(2) The equivocity of the term idealism renders our comparison more a matter of loose ‘family resemblances’ than of clear cut categories. There is second difficulty with idealism as a point of comparison, its reputation. Discussing certain impediments to the reception of Miller’s work, Vincent Colapietro points out that Miller’s idealism is “likely to make him seem outdated and even quaint.”(3) Much of the revolt against idealism in the Twentieth century took the form of hasty ab extra dismissals which left caricatures and low regard in their wake.(4) Association with German idealism came to imply, not depth, but a lack of rigor. -

Besides his work in Royce, his research is in metaphysics, idealism, Aristotle, Kant, early modem and nineteenth-century philosophy, and topics in phenomenology. His publications have appeared in Husserl Studies, Ancient Philosophy, Southwest Philosophical Studies, and Journal of the History of Philosophy. Joseph P. McGhu is associate professor of philosophy at Lock Haven University of Pennsylvania. James M. MeLechlan is associate professor of philosophy and religion at Western Carolina University. PATSAN (BISHOP EULOGIUS OF NOVOMOSKOVSK)1* 1*Oles Honchar Dnipropetrovsk National University (Dnipropetrovsk, Ukraine), e-mail [email protected], ORCID 0000-0002-8156-0143 THE RECEPTION OF THE PHILOSOPHICAL TRADITION AS A WAY OF FORMING AMERICAN PERSONALISM: THE POST-SECULAR VIEW The aim of the article is to define the way of expounding the authenticity of the experience of self-cognition opened by the personalist philosophy of the USA on the horizon of receiving the philosophical tradition established by B. P. Bowne to lay the epistemological foundations for overcoming the impersonalist modes of thought in the philosophical-humanitarian space of North America. At the emergent stage of the historical-philosophical process defined as its post-secular period the topicality of studying American personalism in the indicated aspect of its genesis is predetermined by developing the personalistic inspiration of post-non-classical philosophy into renewing the interaction of philosophical and theological discourses initial for the personalist thought and intended to reunite rationality with its spiritual sources in the course of reflecting the personal mode of being realized on the ground of theism. The further reflection of the meta-ontology of the personhood uncovered by the Scripture and expounded by patristic trinitology presupposes the retrospection of the trajectory of moving towards the Supernatural Revelation paved in the late nineteenth and the first half of twentieth centuries by the attempts of personalizing the ontology, in particular by the “personalized” ontological constructions made in the USA. -

Annotated Bibliography of the Published Works of Josiah Royce The present bibliography is primarily a listing of what Royce himself published. Although I have tried to provide a complete list, it is probable that much has escaped unnoticed, particularly news paper pieces, which could have been published with hardly a trace, and which would be recoverable only by a stroke of luck. Secondarily, the bibliography lists items, including letters, pub lished or reprinted after Royce's death. No systematic effort to locate these has been made, however, and only those that I chanced to come upon are included. Reprintings in textbooks and anthol ogies have been completely ignored. Where the same item appears in several places, observed differ ences have been noted, but the several texts have not been com pared systematically. Some of the information provided about the writings is, most likely, trivial. The inclusion of trivia, however, seems unavoidable, because it is difficult to anticipate what will prove useful in the future. A compilation of this sort is especially dependent upon the help of others. Librarians and archivists, too numerous to mention, have answered inquiries and provided access to their materials. Several student assistants and my wife have spent dull hours turning the pages of crumbling magazines. Father Frank M. Oppenheim and Professor John Clendenning, both Roycean scholars, have been especially helpful. Professor James Willard Oliver of the Univer sity of South Carolina often provided encouragement, while the committee on research of the University of South Carolina pro vided financial assistance.
