Georges Paturet, avocat à la Cour d’Appel de Paris et élève d’Eugène Révillout (1843-1913), conservateur-adjoint du département des antiquités égyptiennes et professeur de langue démotique et de droit égyptien dans la toute jeune École créée au Louvre en 1882, présenta une étude sur « La condition juridique de la femme dans l’ancienne Égypte » ; elle lui valut le titre de premier élève diplômé de la nouvelle institution, et fut publiée chez Ernest Leroux dès 1886. Depuis lors, les travaux de recherche ne se sont jamais interrompus à l’École et plus de 1 200 thèses ou mémoires de fin d’études y sont aujourd’hui conservés. 2 Certes l’École n’est jamais parvenue, en cent trente ans d’histoire, à se doter d’une « bibliothèque » comme celle de l’École des chartes publiant régulièrement les travaux de ses élèves. Un certain nombre de thèses l’ont cependant été par des canaux divers dès les premières années. À partir de 1929 des résumés parurent régulièrement dans le Bulletin des Musées de France puis à partir de 1954, des volumes de Positions de thèses furent publiés, pour certains de façon rétrospective. Après une période d’interruption, leur parution reprit en 1992 et se poursuivit, sous format papier puis numérique, jusqu’en 2008. Dès 1989 d’autre part, l’École apporta son soutien à la revue Histoire de l’art, éditée par l’Association des professeurs d’archéologie et d’histoire de l’art des Universités, où paraissent depuis lors régulièrement des articles issus des travaux de ses élèves. Enfin, en 2005, fut entreprise grâce à l’aide de la Fondation Meyer puis celle de l’Association de l’École du Louvre, l’édition intégrale sur format papier de certains des meilleurs travaux de 3e cycle (et parfois de 2e cycle) dans une collection intitulée « Mémoires de recherche de l’École du Louvre », dont quatre tomes sont aujourd’hui parus (le cinquième en cours de parution). 3 Mais à partir de 2011, une nouvelle étape dans l’histoire de l’organisation de la recherche à l’École a été franchie, nécessitant la mise en place d’un nouvel outil de diffusion, plus souple et mieux adapté aux pratiques contemporaines. Tel est l’objet principal de ces nouveaux « Cahiers de l’École du Louvre » numériques lancés avec ce numéro. L’étape en question fut celle de la réorganisation complète du 3e cycle rendue indispensable par la croissance du nombre d’élèves (58 inscrits en 2011-2012) et la Les Cahiers de l’École du Louvre, 1 | 2012 3 perspective de l’entrée de l’École dans le PRES héSam en tant que membre associé (devenue effective en février 2012). 4 Pour collaborer de façon active et efficace avec les diverses équipes de recherche du PRES, mais aussi avec celles, en dehors du PRES, ayant déjà conclu des conventions de partenariat avec l’École, qu’elles se trouvent dans d’autres universités, établissements d’enseignement supérieur ou musées, il fallait définir des axes et se doter d’un programme d’ensemble (le titre retenu en est « Patrimoine et muséologie : lieux, objets, méthodes »), coordonné et dynamisé par une équipe d’enseignants chercheurs permanents – nouveauté complète à l’École – certes en nombre restreint (cinq membres en 2014), mais recrutés selon les critères universitaires, c’est-à-dire dotés de l’habilitation à diriger des recherches. Il fallait aussi réorganiser les modalités de dépôt des sujets et de soutenance des travaux, en s’inspirant au plus près des normes doctorales. Toutefois, à côté d’un « diplôme de 3e cycle », susceptible de faire l’objet de co-encadrements doctoraux, l’École a choisi de conserver un « diplôme libre de 3e cycle », aux modalités d’encadrement, de temps et de soutenance plus souples, issues de la situation prévalant antérieurement. 5 Une commission de validation de la recherche a été mise en place : outre ses fonctions de contrôle, elle est également chargée de l’attribution d’allocations de recherche pour les élèves et de bourses de chercheurs invités (les premières l’ont été en juillet 2012). 6 Restait à disposer d’un outil de diffusion, commode par son utilisation, rigoureux par ses méthodes et capable de toucher un vaste public. Ce sera l’ambition de ces Cahiers, qui paraîtront semestriellement en septembre et en mars. Chaque numéro comprendra cinq à six articles d’environ 30 000 signes illustrés de cinq à huit images. Seront également mis en ligne : • un résumé en français des articles, • un abstract en anglais, • une courte biographie des auteurs. 7 Une rubrique « Documents » est destinée à accueillir le cas échéant, des articles plus courts mettant en valeur un document inédit (objet, archive, correspondance, etc…). Une rubrique « Actualité de la recherche à l’École du Louvre » rendra compte des séminaires, journées d’études, colloques, parution d’ouvrages, etc… organisés par l’École. Un bref éditorial évoquera l’ensemble des articles de la revue en écho avec l’actualité de la recherche à l’École. 8 La revue est naturellement dotée d’un comité scientifique (pour débuter, les membres de la commission de validation de la recherche) et d’un comité de rédaction, composé du directeur de l’École, de la directrice des études, des différents membres de l’équipe de recherche et d’autres enseignants de l’École, sans s’interdire bien sûr de faire appel à des spécialistes extérieurs. 9 Même calibrée de façon prudente, cette restructuration du 3e cycle n’aurait pu voir le jour sans moyens financiers : c’est dire tout l’apport, déterminant, du mécénat accordé pour ce projet en décembre 2011, par la Fondation Daniel et Nina Carasso. Mécénat réparti sur la période 2012-2014, il concerne une part très importante des différents postes de dépenses, dont cette revue (l’autre part étant prise en compte par redéploiement de ressources de l’École). Il s’agit d’une lame de poignard inscrite au nom d’un roi Menkheperrê, présentant un aspect très inhabituel pour ce type d’armes2, mais néanmoins connu à travers deux autres exemplaires : ceux-ci sont respectivement conservés dans les collections du musée de l’Ermitage à Saint-Pétersbourg et dans celles de l’Egypt Centre de Swansea3. Partant d’une description détaillée de l’objet conservé au Louvre, la présente étude se propose tout d’abord de réunir les quelques données relatives à ces trois documents ; la question de l’authenticité de ces derniers, ainsi que celle de leur place éventuelle au sein du corpus des poignards égyptiens seront ensuite discutées. La lame inscrite du musée du Louvre (AF 13446) 2 De provenance et de datation inconnues4, il s’agit d’une lame de poignard en métal cuivreux5, massive et coulée en une seule pièce, avec quelques détails gravés (fig. 1 et 2). Sa date d’entrée dans les collections du musée du Louvre est difficile à préciser6. Sa longueur totale est de 17 cm, pour une largeur maximale de 3 cm et une épaisseur maximale de 0,8 cm.

Dance acts and choreography at Le Pavillon were organized by veteran hoofer Harry Pilcer, formerly dance director at Rector’s. Max Lolivrel was even pushy enough to hang Rector’s trademark signboard of two drunken dogs above Le Pavillon’s garden stage. Rector’s itself had been closed since the spring of 1925, when Max had filed for bankruptcy in the Paris courts. However, nobody seemed to care. These were heady days. Leon Allen Crutcher (b. Trenton Falls, NJ, 10 Dec 1902) and drummer George Hill Evans (b. Wilmington, NC, 8 July 1896) had been regulars at Rector’s in Paris since their arrival from New York in 1924. Leon had no particular family background n September 2nd, 1926, almost exactly ninety years in music: his father was a New York postman and his mother ago, a society photographer in the French city of an apartment-house janitress.
