PENNSYLVANIA LIVE STEAMERS, INC. P.O. BOX 26202, COLLEGEVILLE, PA. 19426-0202 March-April 2006 THE PREZ SEZ Just recently, a memorial for Late Member and Past President Bill Scott, who died late last year, was held. Bill led a full and productive life, some of it with us. Reflecting on Bill’s many accomplishments, it occurred to me that our club is very rich in accomplished members with many different skills and abilities. For the most part, these members are glad to share their knowledge and experience with other members, enriching us all. I urge you all to get to know us better. And Bill, we miss you. I want to remind you all that we are approaching the summer season and, at Labor Day, our Sixtieth Anniversary Meet. We have a great deal of work to do in preparation, and need your help on work days during the spring and summer. Also, all those attending the anniversary meet must register and pay the registration fee, including members. We ask that members help us out by registering early, for instance, NOW. You can download a registration form from the club web site, or pick one up at the clubhouse. Are you familiar with the technical contributions of Richard Trevithick to the development of steam railways? Perhaps his most important contribution was that he proved that locomotives could operate on smooth rails using the friction between wheel and rail to develop useful drawbar pull, so that cog railways were not generally necessary. Since the frictional force developed is a function of the coefficient of friction and the weight on the driving wheels, this proof also predicted that the weight of locomotives would grow, meaning that improvements in rails were vital. He also proved that high pressure (actually only about 50 psi) boilers could be safely utilized, making compact but powerful locomotives possible. The famous James Watt lobbied to have high pressures outlawed. So much for the ‘inventor of the steam engine’. Not coincidentally, Trevithickbuilt a model steam locomotive. The model first steamed in 1796. It had a boiler, but no firebox. The boiler was filled with water and a hot piece of iron was inserted into a well provided in the boiler. The heat of the iron caused the water to boil. On Christmas Eve 1801 he used a later version to take seven friends on a short journey. By 1804 he had produced the Penydarren locomotive which hauled ten tons of iron and ten passengers for nine miles, at speeds up to nearly five miles per hour. With it he introduced another vital development by using the exhaust steam to improve draft by jetting it up the flue. Trevithick had everything but good P.R. He died in poverty even though the more famous George Stephenson attempted to push forward a Parlimentary Act to provide him a pension in light of his many contributions to locomotive development. Let us remember him better than his nation did. Finally, DON’T FORGET TO REGISTER.
