Pramoedya's Developing Literary Concepts- by Martina Heinschke
Between G elanggang and Lekra: Pramoedya's Developing Literary Concepts- by Martina Heinschke Introduction During the first decade of the New Order, the idea of the autonomy of art was the unchallenged basis for all art production considered legitimate. The term encompasses two significant assumptions. First, it includes the idea that art and/or its individual categories are recognized within society as independent sub-systems that make their own rules, i.e. that art is not subject to influences exerted by other social sub-systems (politics and religion, for example). Secondly, it entails a complex of aesthetic notions that basically tend to exclude all non-artistic considerations from the aesthetic field and to define art as an activity detached from everyday life. An aesthetics of autonomy can create problems for its adherents, as a review of recent occidental art and literary history makes clear. Artists have attempted to overcome these problems by reasserting social ideals (e.g. as in naturalism) or through revolt, as in the avant-garde movements of the twentieth century which challenged the aesthetic norms of the autonomous work of art in order to relocate aesthetic experience at a pivotal point in relation to individual and social life.* 1 * This article is based on parts of my doctoral thesis, Angkatan 45. Literaturkonzeptionen im gesellschafipolitischen Kontext (Berlin: Reimer, 1993). I thank the editors of Indonesia, especially Benedict Anderson, for helpful comments and suggestions. 1 In German studies of literature, the institutionalization of art as an autonomous field and its aesthetic consequences is discussed mainly by Christa Burger and Peter Burger. -

PERCEPTIONS OF MODERNITY AND THE SENSE OF THE PAST: INDONESIAN POETRY IN THE 1920s Keith Foulcher Nontraditional Malay poetry in Indonesia, the forerunner of "modern Indonesian poetry," is generally said to have begun in the decade be tween 1921 and 1931 in the publications of three young Dutch-educated Sumatrans, Muhammad Yamin (born in Sawahlunto, Minangkabau, 1903), Rustam Effendi (born in Padang, 1903), and Sanusi Parid (born in Muara Sipongi, Tapanuli, 1905). Through their writing of Western-influenced poetry in Malay or Bahasa Indonesia, all three saw themselves as con tributing to the birth of a modern Sumatran (later Indonesian) culture, the basis of a new Sumatran (later Indonesian) nation. As such, they were among those who laid the foundation of the cultural nationalism which in the repressive conditions of the 1930s came to represent an alternative to the overtly political expression of Indonesian national ism . In the following pages, I wish to suggest (1) that through their writing Yamin, Rustam, and Sanusi all articulated a cultural stance which involved both a response to what they knew of European culture and their sense of an indigenous cultural heritage; (2) that there were important differences between the stances of Yamin and Rustam in this regard; and (3) that the poetry of Sanusi Pan6, evolving out of Yarnin's, established an approach to modernity which became the conventional stan dard for the burgeoning "Indonesian" poets of the 1930s. * * * CINTA Galiblah aku duduk bermenung Melihatkan langit penuh cahaya Taram-temaram bersuka raya Melenyapkan segala, fikiran nan renung. Apa dikata hendak ditenung Hatiku lemah tiada bergaya Melihatkan bintang berseri mulia Jauh di Sana di puncak gunung. -
ASPECTS of INDONESIAN INTELLECTUAL LIFE in the 1930S
PUDJANGGA BARU: ASPECTS OF INDONESIAN INTELLECTUAL LIFE IN THE 1930s Heather Sutherland Pudjangga Baru, the "New Writer," was a cultural periodical put out in the colonial capital of Batavia by a group of young Indonesian intellectuals from 1933 until the invasion of the Netherlands Indies by Japan in 1942.1 In Bahasa Indonesia, the term pudjangga means "literary man, man of letters; author, poet; linguist, philologist."2 34 The choice of this term for the title of the monthly was no doubt also influenced by an awareness of its historical connotations, for the word can be traced back through such Old Javanese forms as bhujanga to an original Sanskrit root associated with sacred and priestly learning. It implied nobility and integrity as well as literary ability; and it is therefore no accident that the writings appearing in it claimed high idealism and a sense of mission. The purpose proclaimed by Pudjangga Baru became more fervent as the years passed. In the beginning, it described itself simply as a literary, artistic, and cultural monthly. At the start of its third year it declared itself a "bearer of a new spirit in literature, art, culture, and general social affairs."^ At the beginning of its fifth year it claimed to be the "leader of the new dynamic spirit to create a new culture, the culture of Indonesian unity."1* In 1928, when the second All-Indonesia Youth Congress swore the famous oath to work for "one fatherland, one people, and one language" Pudjangga Baru pledged itself to work for the development of the national language and also to strive for a national culture, adding "one culture" to its 1. -

BODDEN Utopia and the Shadow of Nationalism The Plays of Sanusi Pane 1928-1940 i Benedict Anderson's seminal work, lmagined Communities, among other things, uses several early works of modern Southeast Asian literature to demonstrate the emergence of a new kind of narrative perspective which could be associated with the general growth of nationalism in the nine- teenth and twentieth centuries (Anderson 1983:32-7). Subsequently, much work has been done on the links between literature and the construction of a 'national identity'. Fredric Jameson has gone so far in his thinking about the relationship between nationalism and literature as to claim that all 'third world' texts 'necessarily project a political dimension in the form of a national allegory' (Jameson 1986:69). Aijaz Ahmad, responding to Jameson's assertion and the article in which it appeared, countered that Jameson had turned all Asian and African critics and writers into mystifïed 'civilizational others'. He had done this, Ahmad claimed, by reducing all the issues dealt with by these writers and critics to the singular problem of a nationalist struggle against colonial oppressors and their post-colonial successors. Ahmad argued that it is necessary to avoid such reductionism, no matter how well- intentioned, by overlooking neither 'class formation and class struggle' as motivating forces in history, nor 'the multiplicities of intersecting conflicts based upon class, gender, nation, race, region and so on ...' (Ahmad 1987: 8-9). -

Schuyler, Chair Ter Ellingson Laurie J. Sears Program Authorized to Offer Degree: Music © 2013 Philip Bradford Yampolsky University of Washington Abstract Music and media in the Dutch East Indies: Gramophone records and radio in the late colonial era, 1903-1942 Philip Bradford Yampolsky Chair of the Supervisory Committee: Associate Professor Emeritus Philip D. Schuyler Music This dissertation is intended as an ethnomusicological contribution to the history of music and media in Indonesia. It deals with topics and resources that have never been systematically examined for this region: gramophone records and radio broadcasting from the years before World War II, the last years of Dutch colonial control. The gramophone records are our only documentation of the sound of Indonesian music in the years before World War II. This dissertation tries to identify (and to some extent provide) the information one needs in order to understand the records and, by extension, stylistic trends during the pre-war period. Ultimately it is meant as an argument for the importance of making use of historical recordings and discography in ethnomusicology. The use of gramophone records from before World War II (“78s”) in musicology and ethnomusicology is growing. Robert -
