This reinvention is usually associated with Lorenzo Valla and later Desiderius Erasmus for their work on the Greek New Testament, and rightly so. But a significant place must be reserved in that history for Theodor Buchmann, known more commonly by the surname, Bibliander.1 Bibliander’s text-critical contributions are numerous and include Hebrew and Greek works. He published an important Hebrew grammar, for instance, in 1535.2 However, the area in which his work was most ground-breaking concerns Arabic texts, specifically his “encyclopedia of Islam”3 entitled, Machumetis Saracenorum principis, eiusque successorum vitae, ac doctrina, ipseque Alcoran, in which he published the Qurʾān as well as a trove of associated documents.4 The most recent scholarship on Bibliander’s Machumetis Saracenorum by Gregory Miller, asserts that: Bibliander’s interest in Islam was two-fold. -

Sixteenth century anatomical illustrations thrust us into a borderland of art and science, past and present, death and life. Accustomed as we are to the de-contextualized cadavers of modern anatomical textbooks, these images, depicted as living, walking artifacts of antiquity, come as a shock. But in a world awash in the revival of classical culture, the credibility of Vesalius’s observational anatomy depended on the successful appropriation of classical authority. Placed in ruins or depicted as statuary, the cadaver was re-enlivened as an object that fused the worlds of empiricism and humanism, straddling the material present and an imagined past. The objects exhibited here – from the classicizing woodcuts of the Fasciculus Medicinae to Albrecht Dürer’s devices for creating perspectivally foreshortened portraits – allowed artists and anatomists to reinsert and reintegrate the body into the larger cultural and intellectual world of the sixteenth century. Imbued with the allure of the antique, the anatomical body could captivate universities and princely courts across Europe. It could speak, with a new eloquence and authority, about its mysteries, and in the process establish itself as a credible object of observation and study. 78 25. Specific people, a majority of them women, were believed to threaten the world as servants of the Devil. In his De praestigiis daemonum, published in 1563, the Dutch / German physician Johan Wier argued that human beings were unable to perform witchcraft and that the women who were accused were innocent but often deluded by demons into believing that they were guilty. In his plea for tolerance Wier was inspired by his brother Matthias and the spiritualist prophet David Joris. In order to convince his read- ers he used their prejudices, that he himself rejected, about the power of demons and the intellectual capacities of women. Guillaume Postel
Guillaume Postel Few scholars illustrate the conflicting currents of thought which characterised the late Renaissance as clearly as Guillaume Postel, and few carried them to such extremes. On the one hand he was fascinated by esotericism and oddly credulous where apocryphal and spurious texts were concerned. He held firm beliefs in the role of the prophet and the imminence of the millennium preceding the end of the world − beliefs whose roots can be traced back to the Middle Ages and which were deeply affected by the enthusiasm attending the Reformation. He was convinced that France was destined to play a providential part in reforming the Church, and that he himself had a divine mission. This was the stuff of some of the great ‘heretics’ of the time – Giordano Bruno, Francesco Pucci and Tommaso Campanella. Postel’s visionary behaviour led to his expulsion from the Society of Jesus, his incarceration by the Roman Inquisition, and, finally, to his confinement in a lunatic asylum in Paris. On the other hand Postel was a pioneer. He launched the study of Arabic in Europe - as a teacher he had insights into how the language should be tackled which were far ahead of his time – and he was one of the first practitioners of Samaritan and Syriac. He produced some of the earliest works on comparative linguistics. The manuscripts he collected and edited contributed to furthering biblical studies and to creating a critical attitude to the received texts ultimately due to undermine the very roots of the Christian faith. This collection of Postel’s works was assembled over more than a decade and completed shortly before the fifth centenary of his birth. -
