Maier 173 Homiletical Studies 182 Melanchthon versus Luther: the Contemporary Struggle Bengt Hagglund Luther and Melanchthon in Modern Research In many churches in Scandinavia or in Germany one will find two oil paintings of the same size and datingfrom the same time, representing Martin Luther and Philip Melanchthon, the two prime reformers of the Church. From the point of view of modern research it may seem strange that Melanchthon is placed on the same level as Luther, side by side with him, equal in importance and equally worth remembering as he. Their common achieve- ment was, above all, the renewal of the preaching of the Gospel, and therefore it is deserving t hat their portraits often are placed in the neighborhood of the pulpit. Such pairs of pictures were typical of the nineteenth-century view of Melanchthon and Luther as harmonious co-workers in the Reformation. These pic- tures were widely displayed not only in the churches, but also in many private homes in areas where the Reformation tradition was strong. -

I understand that my thesis may be made electronically available to the public. ii Abstract In contrast to the atmosphere of mistrust and division between confessions that was common to most polities during the Reformation era, the Peace of Augsburg, signed in 1555, declared the free imperial cities of the Holy Roman Empire a place where both Catholics and Lutherans could live together in peace. While historians readily acknowledge the exceptional nature of this clause of the Peace, they tend to downplay its historical significance through an undue focus on its long-term failures. In order to challenge this interpretation, this paper examines the successes and failures of the free imperial cities’ implementation of the Peace through a comparative analysis of religious coexistence in Augsburg, Cologne, and Nuremberg during the Peace’s 63- year duration. This investigation reveals that while religious coexistence did eventually fail first in Nuremberg and then in Cologne, the Peace made major strides in the short term which offer important insights into the nature of tolerance and confessional conflict in urban Germany during the late Reformation era. -

This reinvention is usually associated with Lorenzo Valla and later Desiderius Erasmus for their work on the Greek New Testament, and rightly so. But a significant place must be reserved in that history for Theodor Buchmann, known more commonly by the surname, Bibliander.1 Bibliander’s text-critical contributions are numerous and include Hebrew and Greek works. He published an important Hebrew grammar, for instance, in 1535.2 However, the area in which his work was most ground-breaking concerns Arabic texts, specifically his “encyclopedia of Islam”3 entitled, Machumetis Saracenorum principis, eiusque successorum vitae, ac doctrina, ipseque Alcoran, in which he published the Qurʾān as well as a trove of associated documents.4 The most recent scholarship on Bibliander’s Machumetis Saracenorum by Gregory Miller, asserts that: Bibliander’s interest in Islam was two-fold. -

Vesalius, considered as the founder of modern anatomy, had profoundly changed not only human anatomy, but also the intellectual structure of medicine. The impact of his scientific revolution can be recognized even today. In this article we review the life, anatomical work, and achievements of Andreas Vesalius. THE LIFE OF ANDREAS VESALIUS Andreas van Wesel (Figure 1) was born on December 31st, 1514, in Brussels, which was a city of the Duchy of Brabant (the southern portion of Belgium) and the Holy Roman Empire. His surname meant ‘weasel’ and his family’s coat of arms, as depicted in Vesalius’ masterpiece (Vesalius 1543a), represented three weasels (Figure 2). He came from a family of renowned physicians and pharmacists; both his father (pharmacist) and grandfather (physician) served the Holy Roman Emperor (for a comprehensive biography of Vesalius, see Cushing 1962). In 1529, he left Brussels to study at the Catholic University of Leuven (Figure 3), where he embarked on the arts courses. As wealthy young man of his time, Vesalius studied rhetoric, philosophy and logic in Latin, Classical Greek, and Hebrew at the Collegium Trilingue. -

Adopting a New Religion: The Case of Protestantism in 16th Century Germany Davide Cantoni March 2011 Barcelona GSE Working Paper Series Working Paper nº 540 Adopting a New Religion: The Case of Protestantism in 16th Century Germany Davide Cantoni∗ Universitat Pompeu Fabra March 2010 Abstract Using a rich dataset of territories and cities of the Holy Roman Empire in the 16th century, this paper investigates the determinants of adoption and diffusion of Protestantism as a state religion. A territory’s distance to Wittenberg, the city where Martin Luther taught, is a major determinant of adoption. This finding can be ex- plained through a theory of strategic neighbourhood interactions: in an uncertain legal context, introducing the Reformation was a risky enterprise for territorial lords, and had higher prospects of success if powerful neighbouring states committed to the new faith first. The model is tested in a panel dataset featuring the dates of introduction of the Reformation. Accepted: September, 2012. Summary Matthias Flacius Illyricus is reputed to have been one of the most influential Croatian humanists and theologians of the 16th century. Through his numer- ous works, he gave an efficient theological, philosophical, historical, linguistic and educational contribution to European cultural history. Besides a concise review of Flacius’ life, the article discusses the truth as Flacius’ starting point in his arguments and in life in general. Then it focuses on Flacius’ spiritual/ theological struggle for the freedom of the church which contributed greatly to the defeat of the pro-Catholic politics of Emperor Charles V and the survival of the Lutheran tradition of the Reformation in the German countries. Key words: Augsburg Interim, Bible, Gospel, truth, Luther, theology, Flacius Introduction According to the notion of Radovan Ivančević (2004, 9), Matthias Flacius led only a meager group of Croatian thinkers who are now globally recognized as compelling contributors to the European cultural and scientific history of the 16th century. Ivančević has effectively and characteristically modified the expression “Stop Rojters” into the expression “Stop Flacius” because when Flacius published secret church and state documents accompanied by his direct and undisguised comments, he discovered the concealed purposes and goals of the enemies of the truth. After Luther’s death (1546), severe political, church-political, theological and cultural battles were waged in the German lands, and Flacius contributed to each one of them considerably. -
