Melancholie. -

Departure Without Destination. Annemarie Schwarzenbach As Photographer 18.09.20–03.01.21
Exhibition Guide Founded by Maurice E. and Martha Müller and the heirs of Paul Klee Departure without Destination. Annemarie Schwarzenbach as photographer 18.09.20–03.01.21 Table of contents 1 “A Love for Europe” 7 2 “Little Encounters” 12 3 The “New Earth” 15 4 “Beyond New York” 21 5 “Between Continents” 28 6 “The Happy Valley” 31 Biography 36 3 Floorplan 3 4 5 LOUNGE 2 6 1 4 Writer, journalist, photographer, traveller, cosmopolitan: Annemarie Schwarzenbach is one of the most dazzling and contradictory figures in modern Swiss cultural history. Schwarzenbach saw herself primarily as a writer. Yet she was also a pioneer of photojournalism in Switzerland. Around 300 of her texts appeared in Swiss magazines and newspapers during her lifetime. From 1933, they were increasingly accompanied by her own pho- tographs. However, since the majority of these images remained unpublished, the quality and scope of her work as a photographer has been relatively unknown until recently. Most of Schwarzenbach’s photographs were taken during her travels, which between 1933 and 1942 took her across Europe, to the Near East and Central Asia, to the United States and Central and North Africa. Her work as a journalist, but also her upper class background and her status as the wife of a diplomat granted her an extraordinary freedom of travel for the period. Her images and writings are closely intertwined and document the upheavals, tensions, and conflicts of the period leading up to World War II: the consequences of the Great Depression, the hope for social progress, the threat of National Socialism, the effects of modernization and industrialization, or the European fascination with the “orient”. -

TPG Exhibition List
Exhibition History 1971 - present The following list is a record of exhibitions held at The Photographers' Gallery, London since its opening in January 1971. Exhibitions and a selection of other activities and events organised by the Print Sales, the Education Department and the Digital Programme (including the Media Wall) are listed. Please note: The archive collection is continually being catalogued and new material is discovered. This list will be updated intermittently to reflect this. It is for this reason that some exhibitions have more detail than others. Exhibitions listed as archival may contain uncredited worKs and artists. With this in mind, please be aware of the following when using the list for research purposes: – Foyer exhibitions were usually mounted last minute, and therefore there are no complete records of these brief exhibitions, where records exist they have been included in this list – The Bookstall Gallery was a small space in the bookshop, it went on to become the Print Room, and is also listed as Print Room Sales – VideoSpin was a brief series of worKs by video artists exhibited in the bookshop beginning in December 1999 – Gaps in exhibitions coincide with building and development worKs – Where beginning and end dates are the same, the exact dates have yet to be confirmed as the information is not currently available For complete accuracy, information should be verified against primary source documents in the Archive at the Photographers' Gallery. Art Faces. Artists Portraits in the Würth Collection ”
“Art Faces. Artists portraits in the Würth Collection ” Art Forum Würth Capena 18.02.2019 – 14.03.2020 François Meyer Roy Lichtenstein 1977 Coll. Würth, Inv. 7129 After being presented for the first time at the Kunsthalle Würth in Schwäbisch Hall in 2003, the exhibition Art Faces: Portraits of Artists in the Würth Collection makes a stop at Art Forum Würth Capena. The Art Faces collection began with the work of the Swiss photographer François Meyer, who, driven by his curiosity about the person concealed behind a work of art, took on the ambitious project of creating a collection of photographs portraying artists. Meyer began collecting his works in 1975, when he worked as a photographer for the art world, collaborating with such magazines as L’Oeil, Conossaince des Arts, Architectural Digest, and Elle Decor. Meyer does not seek to create impromptu, spontaneous snapshots, but rather compositions resulting from in-depth reflections. In his portraits he establishes a relationship from behind the lens between the world of photography and that of art, and his photographs depict the art scene of the 1970s as a kaleidoscope coloured by the spirit of the time. Meyer began with 80 portraits, including those of Sonia Delaunay, Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, Wilfredo Lam, Richard Serra, Tom Wesselmann, and other famous artists. The project was left forgotten in a drawer until 1998, when Meyer and his wife decided to expand the collection through purchasing portraits by other photographers. A surprising number of photographers have devoted themselves exclusively to creating portraits of artists, finding a special mission for their work in the intimate relationship with their subjects. -
