It’s been another fun year at CD Central! Certainly one filled with ups and downs (thinking about the Limestone road project here) but the bottom line is we’ve enjoyed bringing some great music to Lexington, both live and on disc. This booklet is our annual recap of some of the year’s brightest musical highlights. One of the great things we can look back at this year is our participation in Local First Lexington. All of the members of LFL are locally-owned, independent businesses who do great things for our community. These are the businesses that make Lexington a unique place among a sea of national chain stores. Please make it one of your New Year’s resolutions to “Think Local First” when making your buying decisions in the coming year. It feels good to shop local and it makes Lexington a better place. -

Tom Wilson Phd Commentary
Composition portfolio: approaches to a pop- derived musical language Thomas Wilson Royal Holloway, University of London Submitted as part of the degree of PhD in Composition 2017 Declaration I Thomas Wilson hereby declare that the compositions and accompanying commentary comprised in this submission are entirely my own work. Where I have consulted the work of others, this is always clearly stated. Signature……………………………………………………………………………………………… Name…………………………………………………………………………………………………… Date……………………………………………………………………………………………………… 2 Abstract The focus of my PhD is the artistic inheritance of the classic pop songwriting tradition, as characterised by what I see as its core aesthetic values — tunefulness, conciseness and the use of clear sectionalised structures. My research explores the combination of these priorities with features not usually associated with pop, such as periodic variation, polyrhythmic layering, harmonic ambiguity and melodic counterpoint, with the aim being to create complex and unpredictable music imbued with pop’s directness of communication. The result of this research is a portfolio of four contrasting projects: I.D., a full-length album of songs, Down The Tubes, an instrumental piece designed for private listening, Malicious Insomnia, a concert work written for the new music ensemble Sudden Junction, and Terse, a four-song E.P. These were chosen to demonstrate the wide applicability of my pop- derived musical language, and feature collaborations with established performers from pop, folk, jazz and classical backgrounds. -
David Longstreth / Bang on a Can All-Stars
David Longstreth / Bang On A Can All-Stars January 13, 2012 By MRP In February, Bang On A Can, originally a fest but now an international experimental music organization, is releasing its first studio album in five years by the Bang On A Can All-Stars. Titled Big Beautiful Dark and Scary, the double album features the All-Stars — currently: Ashley Bathgate, cello; Robert Black, bass; Vicky Chow, piano; David Cossin, percussion; Mark Stewart, electric guitar; and Evan Ziporyn, clarinets — performing works by Bang’s founding members (Julia Wolfe, David Lang, and Michael Gordon), as well as pieces by Conlon Nancarrow, Louis Andriessen, Kate Moore, and, yes, Mr. David Longstreth of Dirty Projectors. That’s right. In 2009, while you were busy listening to Bitte Orca (TMT Review) and watching bootleg videos of Dirty Projectors’ collaboration with Björk (TMT Review), the All-Stars premiered three new works by Longstreth — “Instructional Video,” “Matt Damon,” and “Breakfast at J&M” — all commissioned by Bang On A Can. This put Longstreth in the company of composers like Alvin Lucier, Steve Reich, Terry Riley, John Adams, Ornette Coleman, and Matthew Shipp, for whom Bang On A Can has commissioned and/or premiered pieces. The All-Stars have since went into the studio to record Longstreth’s compositions for the new double album, and we’re streaming the longest of the three, “Matt Damon,” for the next month or so. In addition to some new Longstreth arrangements that are somewhat reminiscent of the jerky musical narratives in The Getty Address (Dirty Projectors’ 2005 glitch opera), you’ll also hear some direct musical quotations from a track off the group’s 2007 album, Rise Above. -
