IAVA Recipient: Secretary Mattis Letter: Greetings, First, thank you for your service and sacrifice and for your incredible leadership that so many in the military and veteran community have experienced and respect. As you know, more than 1.5 million veterans have have educated themselves with the Post-9/11 GI Bill, and almost 70% of Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America (IAVA) members have used or transferred this benefit to a dependent. It could very well be the most transformative federal benefit created. The new restriction on Post-9/11 GI Bill transferability to only those with less than 16 years of service is a completely unnecessary reduction of this critical benefit, and it will ultimately hurt our military recruitment and readiness. In a time of war, it remains enormously important to recruit and retain qualified servicemembers, especially with an ever-decreasing pool of eligible recruits. For years, IAVA has been at the forefront of this fight. We led the effort to establish this benefit in 2008 and we have successfully defended it in recent years. We cannot allow our GI Bill to be dismantled or abused. This is why I am standing with my fellow IAVA members to respectfully request that you reverse this counterproductive policy change that creates barriers to access to these transformative benefits. The GI Bill has been earned by millions of men and women on the battlefield and around the world and it should not be subjected to arbitrary restrictions that limit its use. Again, thank you for your leadership and I ask that you take action now to reverse this decision.

  • Economic Development DRAFT TEXT 28/08/2008
Annual Report 2007/08 Economic development DRAFT TEXT 28/08/2008 ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT OUR APPROACH Wellington has enjoyed steady economic growth in recent years. Unemployment is low, incomes are relatively high, and the city has retained a healthy government and financial sector while also making progress towards developing new high-tech and creative industries. Under the Wellington Regional Strategy, economic development agency Grow Wellington has principal responsibility for promoting economic development throughout the region. We support economic development generally through provision of many of the facilities and services that make this a great place for workers and their families to live and for businesses to locate. We also provide specific support for tourism through the marketing of Positively Wellington Tourism and the attraction of iconic events. CASE STUDY: HOMEGROWN Wellington’s waterfront rocked for the Homegrown Music Festival. Held over Anzac Weekend 2008, the Vodafone Homegrown Music Festival attracted a sold- out crowd of thousands. The festival featured 33 bands and DJs across five stages. Headline acts included a who’s who of New Zealand music: Shihad, Pluto, Kora, the Mint Chicks, Opshop, Elemeno-P, Salmonella Dub, The Black Seeds, The Phoenix Foundation, and more. All stages were either indoors or in massive marquees to ensure the event could go ahead rain or shine. Art installations, street performers and stalls for arts and crafts, food and clothing all complemented the on-stage entertainment. Festival venues, all on Wellington’s waterfront, included the TSB Arena and Shed 6, Frank Kitts Park and the Lagoon. Festival organisers encouraged use of sustainable transport to and from venues, as well as recycling of food and drink containers.

  • In “Love” Jukebox Memoir
in “Love” Jukebox Memoir (release date: 2/25/14) After recording 2012’s Domestic Disturbances, I realized I’d been struggling on the last couple of records to assimilate some of our many influences into what could be described as “The Jet Age sound.” Thus the concept for this album: To “own” the music that inspired us, without worrying about appearances. Of course, we didn’t want to sound like a wedding band, so if a song didn’t make sense to a player, if it didn’t resonate, it wasn’t gonna happen. A few songs didn’t make the cut (notably my ABBA homage—seriously), but once we’d gotten those missteps out of the way, these tracks quickly fell into place: 1. I Can’t Turn Around – Deliberately written as a state-of-the-art Jet Age song, this track brings our memoir up- to-date. I’d initially attributed the extended outro to our stint opening for The Wedding Present during 2011’s Bizarro tour, but I realized we’d been doing stuff like this since our debut, 2005’s Breathless. 2. Come Lie Down – A dream come true for me as Swervedriver’s Adam Franklin and Ride’s Mark Gardener join me on vocals. When I first started making music, Ride really showed me how guys who sing like girls could rock like The Who, while Swervedriver gave me guitar heroics to aspire to. I also cribbed from Spiritualized’s take on the Troggs’ “Anyway That You Want Me” and The Wedding Present’s “Dalliance,” which is ironic, since the latter inspired me to pare back some of my shoegazing tendencies.
