muppets for grown-ups

Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane talks about bringing a toy to life – and watching him turn out to be a bit of a dick .

When you were a kid, you very badly wanted one of your toys to come to life. That’s why Toy Story was so much of a hit. Part of the reason, at least. You wanted a friend you could trust, someone you could tell your secrets to. Someone who, when you ran to your room because your mum was making you eat broccoli, would say to you, “Yeah, your mum is a jerk and broccoli is an even bigger jerk.” Then you grew up and realised that notion is a childish one. In the case of Ted, the came-to-life toy grew up with his owner – and he turned out to be a bit of a beatnik sleaze, bumming around, pissing off his owner’s girlfriend and using his money. He’s the friend that we’ve seen in every movie before as that “I need to turn my life around” plot device. But in Ted, the plot device is the plot instead. Ted was born from the mind of Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane. Although MacFarlane originally conceived of Ted as an animated series, he came to the conclusion that the story would lend itself better to film. FellowFamily Guy collaborators and scribes Alec Sulkin and Wellesley Wild were brought onboard to develop the story of the magical stuffed teddy bear and his owner who grew up to find themselves in a state of arrested development. The exposition answers those questions you find yourself, as a grown-up, pondering – if a toy did come to life, wouldn’t everyone know about it? Wouldn’t it be famous? Would the headline-grabbing teddy bear appear on late night talk shows? Yes. But it also addresses the aging attention span audiences around the world would have for said toy. As the decades roll on, grown-up John (played by Mark Wahlberg) finds that his once cherished toy has become his worse for wear, foul-mouthed, cynical companion. MacFarlane’s first foray into the directing realm wasn’t approached solo. Once he decided the time was right, the Hollywood A-lister opted to bring many of the Family Guy crew along for the ride. Being notorious for the offensive humour we’ve come to love (or hate) so very passionately, Family Guy-style gags aren’t for the masses. It’s grown-up fart jokes with plenty of talk of sex. It’s full of swearing and is bountiful with in-joke homage references. Writer Alec Sulkin notes this when he says, “Seth said he wanted it to be a very R-rated comedy… The bear comes to life with a child’s wish, and then you cut to almost 30 years later and it’s the roommate who won’t leave. They have a sweet beginning, then Ted becomes this national sensation and ultimately turns into something like a former child star. He’s somebody who was famous, is still alive, but not famous anymore.” MacFarlane says that he was excited about the humour that occurs after the boy and bear grow up. “A big part of the comedy comes from the fact that years after the bear came to life, people have gotten used to it and nobody cares anymore… a point it would naturally get to in real life. So once that big moment has passed, what’s the other 95 per cent of your life going to be like?” Not only is MacFarlane the voice, director, producer and co-writer of Ted, but he also played the animated character in the motion suit. “It was necessary to have the suit there every day,” he says. “There were days when I had to have it on the entire day, so it had to be something that was going to capture the data that we needed but wasn’t going to be constrictive or distracting. “In a perfect world, the performance of Ted is the same as everyone else’s performance. We wanted them all to be people, one of whom happens to have the body of a teddy bear. The trick was to treat Ted the same way as we treated everyone else… The guy I look to as the epitome of doing that right was Jim Henson. Muppets were real people. In that world it was normal for Muppets to be walking around… that was what we wanted.”

Having the kind of creative control that Longstreth has over the group Yet that’s exactly what Dirty Projectors did in 2009 with their album Bitte surely goes a long way to shaping the curious incarnations the band has Orca, somehow managing this feat with only minimal tweaks to their taken over the 11 EPs and albums they’ve released to date. “David’s been uncompromisingly distinct sound. putting records out on Dirty Projectors for a long time,” says Coffman. The mention of yet another movie tie-in video game is usually met with grumbles of disapproval and the rolling of eyes skywards in the gaming world. However, anyone who remembers the brilliant game based on the Spider-Man 2 movie knows this franchise has a lot of potential. And the good news is that same winning formula has been revamped for the current-gen market in The Amazing Spider-Man.

AMP IT UP The game opens up with an interactive cinematic By eco-amp sequence where our hero, Peter Parker, is being shown through Oscorp’s laboratories. It’s an intensive course where we teach the students all the ins and outs of learning how to create and implement games. The game artists learn the software, tools and engine pipelines to get their assets into to one of the available game engines. For example, they learn how to model, texture, rig and animate using the appropriate software tools. They then learn how to export these art assets into a gaming engine like Unreal or Havok. Additionally, the artists work in teams with the game programming students to make their games. The programmers work hand-in-hand with the artists to write code and tools for their games. It’s rewarding to watch the students learning to work together and see what kind of magic they produce.

What did you work on before? The most recent title I worked on was the AAA shooter Homefront from Kaos Studios. I worked as the lead cinematics animator for that project. Past games I have been credited for include Far Cry, BioShock and Duke Nukem Forever.

Apparently you’re a bit of a gaming whizz. What’s your favourite console? Why? That’s always a tough question because I like so many games on all of them. I would say the Xbox 360 because that’s what I have been playing recently, but I guess it all depends on which game I am currently playing.

What’s your favourite game of all time? It’s a toss-up between Another World on the Amiga 500 or Ultima 4 on my Commodore 64. Both of these games made a major impact on me as a kid, so I’ve got to credit them for that.

Do you have a favourite genre of game? My favourite game genre is RTS (Real Time Strategy). However, I like to work on shooters because you get to push the art and animation technology.

Best fighting game? Street Fighter 3.

Best shoot-em-up? Team Fortress 2.

Best racing game? Gran Turismo series.

Best smartphone game? UniWar.

Most underrated game around today? Roogoo. SATURDAY In your humble expert opinion, what will the future of gaming be? It’s going to be all digital-based and streaming from the cloud. We still have a long way to go, but technology is moving fast. There have already been paradigm VILLA MARIA ESTATE shifts within the industry. Flash-based games and iPad/Android games have been 15 DECEMBER on the move for some time now and will continue to grow. Recently there’s been a push for the free-to-play micro-transaction-based business model. You will always be able to purchase something but I believe this model is also here to stay.
