On stage he will be joined by friends of the calibre of Deerhoof, Six Organs of Admittance, Dirty Projectors and Frog Eyes. The name, Maximum Black , is derived from a song by the German band Bohren & The Club of Gore, of whom Owen is a great fan. The Maximum Black festival will be 100% funded by the Vienna Public Utility company. This cooperation, however, is not a product of planned negotiations, but a result of extraordinary circumstances. Background The Vienna Public Utility Company had commissioned an international advertising agency to realize a new image campaign for them. The advertising company got in contact with Final Fantasy about using their song “This is the song of Win & Regine” as background music to a video campaign, but band and team had decided not to licence their music for commercial purposes due to bad experiences in the past. As a result the advertising company decided to ask another artist to write a song which turned out to be a nearly identical cover of Final Fantasy’s original, and proceeded to use it for their campaign. This plagiarism was not kept a secret for a long time. An impending law suit did not suit the interests of both Final Fantasy and the Viennese company, and so they both agreed to compromise: Final Fantasy, i.e.

Music videos have affected aesthetic style in a wide range of film and television genres, introducing experimental and avant-garde techniques to a mass audience. Because most music videos last only a few minutes, it is difficult to make sense of their often-conflicting images, sounds, and messages. This course challenges participants to read music videos as texts by engaging with their visual and auditory materials. We will explore how the gender, race, and class of video participants shapes meaning, as well as how pacing and editing contribute to (or detract from) a narrative flow. We will also consider the music video in relation to notions of stardom and celebrity, and will speculate on the future of the music video amid drastic changes in the production and marketing of media. The second portion of the course applies these analytical skills to a wide variety of media, including video games, live concert films, film and television music placements, television title sequences and end credits, user generated content, YouTube, remixes and more. BROWN (mailto:[email protected]) If there’s a shared poignancy between a fertile and bucolic landscape and the almost-comfortingly familiar lifelessness of a big-box-mega store, Jake Longstreth captures it on the canvas. The magic occurs when he splits the difference. Is a Best Buy parking lot allowed to be as a sacrosanct as a forest? Depending on one’s headspace, both places are either imposing or inviting; or a simultaneous blend of the two. The 39-year-old Longstreth isn't alone in seeing the literal bigger picture of not only what we perceive - but also immortalize. Multimedia arts-guru Ed Ruscha is one artist who opened the parameters of what is fair game within land/city/suburban-scape artworks. “I'm interested in glorifying something that we in the world would say doesn't deserve being glorified,” the now 79-year-old, iconic American artist once explained. “Something that's forgotten, focused on as though it were some sort of sacred object.” Longstreth expresses his own glorification of numinous woodlands and commonplace suburban silence through a mix of sharp, brilliant photorealist images and other works imbued with more abstraction, if not a kind of tonal disintegration. The piece Facade (AMC) (oil on canvas, 24 x 30, 2012) offers us an almost-scientific view of the mundane fascia of a building.

    December 7, 2020 Jake Longstreth Is the Renaissance Dude America Needs By Caitlin White Writing the best song about bad margaritas is only the start for the acclaimed painter and co-host of “Time Crisis” The best thing about Ezra Koenig, host of the cult-favorite internet radio show Time Crisis, is that he treats every cultural artifact that comes across his desk with the same care. The best thing about the show’s other host, Jake Longstreth, is that he absolutely does not. Founded in 2015 by Koenig, who is also the frontman of the popular indie rock band Vampire Weekend, Time Crisis currently airs every two weeks on Apple Music. In the five years since its inception, the show has grown considerably, including the addition of Longstreth, noted humorist and parody expert Jason Richards (aka @Seinfeld2000), and producer Nick Weidenfeld. “Farm Hill Road” oil on canvas 84 x 84, Jake Longstreth With an ever-escalating crew of guests and friends of the show, conversations can stretch to include almost anything, whether it be appearances from experts in Big Candy, like Hershey’s Marketing Director Ryan Riess, who recently guested to dismiss TC conspiracy theories about seasonal Reese’s Cup formulas, to actual musical legends like David Crosby and Bob Weir, or even comedic royalty like Desus Nice and The Kid Mero. Despite the rotating cast of characters, Jake’s role remains singular. Whoever is present, and particularly when no guests are around, the constant push and pull between Ezra and Jake’s dual approaches to pop culture is the core of what makes Time Crisis fascinating — and what makes it so fucking funny.
