On the bare mountain ridges you have a wonderful view over the High Rhine to the Swiss Alps. While our knowledge of the organization of shoreline fish assemblages and their representative sampling are increasing (e.g. Jurajda et al., 2001; Erős et al., 2008), information about the composition and spatial and temporal distribution of fishes in deep channel habitats is still relatively sporadic (Dettmers et al., 2001). Inferences about how main channel habitats contribute to the bioassessment of large rivers compared with shoreline monitoring data should also be more precisely developed (de Leeuw et al., 2007; Flotemersch et al., 2011). However, detailed quantitative studies are restricted to only a very few large rivers even in the relatively well studied temperate large river systems of Europe and North- America (see e.g. Wolter and Freyhof, 2004; Gutreuter et al., 2009; Ridenour et al., 2009). It would be thus important to develop deep channel fish monitoring methods for providing data for both basic research and the conservation management of riverine fish species. Matching habitat typology and ecological assemblage types can be useful in environmental management and conservation (Dufrene and Legendre, 1997; Heino et al., 2003).

Lange war das Albtal unpassierbar, der Weg von Albbruck nach St. Blasien führte über Birndorf und Unteralpfen nach Niedermühle. Erst ab 1854 wurde die Albtalstraße erbaut, der schwierigste Abschnitt Hohenfels-Tiefenstein machte fünf Felstunnels erforderlich.

For that reason, no clear knowledge exists about its actual range size and habitat preferences. We here applied a molecular taxonomic and phylogeographical approach based on mitochondrial and nuclear DNA to shed light on its distribution and to infer its demographic history. Furthermore, we analysed aquifer types and water flow regimes to provide a clearer picture of the species’ ecological requirements. Our results indicate that N. puteanus is widely distributed north of the Alps, having its core range in the geomorphological natural region of the ‘South German Scarplands’ (SGS). Additionally, isolated satellite populations exist in the Taunus and the Sauerland, and two single individuals were collected in Luxembourg and in Austria, respectively. The species’ maximal distribution range reaches 756 km between the two single-specimen records and 371 km within the SGS. A very high haplotype diversity was observed, revealing the presence of seven haplotype groups.

The hike begins at Jakobusstein (666 m) in the main street of Lossburg (near the Jakobus church in Lossburg) - leads through Schloßstrasse, Schloßring, Plattenweg, through the former castle comple x (now miniature golf), over the country road towards the swimming pool. We cross the river “Kinzig” on a narrow bridge and walk along the river to the Kinzig bridge, where we turn right shortly before (direction inn ”Mitt lere Mühle ” ) in Ehlenbogen. Before the Juntlenhof we keep left, cross a bridge and then walk right downhill on a path along the main road. At the bus stop we cross the main road. We follow a forest path uphill until we pass under the railway line. Then we turn right. After leaving the for est we enjoy a wonderful view over the Ehlenboger valley, the railway, the main road and the Kinzig. At the Erlenhof inn we can already see the residential areas of Alpirsbach . At the railway viaduct, the path leads us along the main road to the monastery church (441 m). Monastery church in Alpirsbach We walk past the Museum of City History (on the left we see the Alpirsbach monastery brewery) and turn into Kr ähenbadstrasse in front of the h otel Löwen - Post. We pass the glassblowing workshop, cross the rai lway line and the main road (B294) and reach the small town of Alpirsbach.
