Conservation Implications of Spur Length Variation in Long-Spur Columbines (Aquilegia longissima) CHRISTOPHER J. STUBBEN AND BROOK G. MILLIGAN Department of Biology, New Mexico State University, Las Cruces, New Mexico 88003 ABSTRACT: Populations of long-spur columbine (Aquilegia longissima) with spurs 10-16 cm long are known only from a few populations in Texas, a historical collection near Baboquivari Peak, Arizona, and scattered populations in Coahuila, Chihuahua, and Nuevo Leon, Mexico. Populations of yellow columbine with spurs 7-10 cm long are also found in Arizona, Texas, and Mexico, and are now classified as A. longissima in the recent Flora of North America. In a multivariate analysis of floral characters from 11 yellow columbine populations representing a continuous range of spur lengths, populations with spurs 10-16 cm long are clearly separate from other populations based on increasing spur length and decreasing petal and sepal width. The longer-spurred columbines generally flower after monsoon rains in late summer or fall, and occur in intermittently wet canyons and steep slopes in pine-oak forests. Also, longer-spurred flowers can be pollinated by large hawkmoths with tongues 9-15 cm long. Populations with spurs 7-10 cm long cluster with the common golden columbine (A. chrysantha), and may be the result of hybridization between A. chrysantha and A. longissima. Uncertainty about the taxonomic status of intermediates has contributed to a lack of conservation efforts for declining populations of the long-spur columbine. Aquilegia Coerulea What Does Beauty Have to Do with It?
The Proving of the Rocky Mountain Columbine - Aquilegia Coerulea What does beauty have to do with it? Barbara Seideneck CHom, CCH, RSHom (NA) Awe-inspiring to visitors of the Rocky Mountains, the alpine Columbine ‘s pristine beauty catches everyone’s attention from June through August. The intense blue of the flower’s outer petals resembles the color of a glacier lake or a clear Colorado sky on a summer morning. And skies hardly get any bluer than that. Its inner white concentric sepals summon images of sheer purity, and the fine gold colored stamens add to the flower’s delicacy. With admiration, hikers and mountaineers alike watch the delicate Colorado State flower dance in the slightest breeze. During the years of 2003, 2004 and 2005 the Homeopathy School of Colorado undertook a proving of Aquilegia vulgaris (Auil-vulg), the Common Columbine, an un-proven homeopathic remedy listed in J. H. Clarke’s Dictionary of Practical Materia Medica (American Homeopath (AH), Vol. 11). The remarkable results of the proving inspired an interest in proving the Colorado State flower, Aquilegia coerulea (Aquil-coer) and spurred a curiosity to look for similarities and differences between these two flowers of the same family. Methodology The proving was conducted with 34 provers (25 female, 8 male) in three different groups during 2006, 2007, and 2008 at the Homeopathy School of Colorado. Each prover’s baseline data was collected by recording pre-proving symptoms for three days prior to the proving, and by taking a baseline case. The remedy was given in 30C and 200C potencies. -

It occurs in shady rocky crevices, near the upper parts of Mt. Corrasi (Supramontes Region), where it is a member of chasmophilous communities. This species is morphologically, phenologically, ecologically and genetically well differentiated from the other Sardinian taxa, showing some relationships mainly with A. nugorensis, an endemic species of Central-Eastern Sardinia. Its conservation status is examined. A key of all taxa present in Sardinia is also provided. Columbine Mixture FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS FIRST
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS FOLIAGE TURNED YELLOW IN MID SUMMER? This normally happens after columbines flower in areas with hot or dry summers. If you keep the soil evenly moist, this may not happen, but if the leaves do turn yellow or die down, cut them back to the ground. The plant is not dead. It may not grow or make an appearance again until the next spring. It is a good idea to have some annuals or a potted plant to set out to fill in the empty space where the columbine was. WHEN DO YOU CUT THESE BACK? Properly sited and planted, they require very little maintenance. They often turn yellow or brown after flowering in late summer, especially if the plants are in full sun. At this time they may be cut back to the ground. Also cut back the foliage of columbine when it yellows about frost time. WHAT ARE THE STREAKING LINES ON MY FOLIAGE? These charming plants are virtually carefree. About the only thing ever you see from a pest are leaf miners. If this happens, cut the foliage all the way back to the ground and discard it. Healthy, new growth will emerge quickly. ARE THEY DEER RESISTANT? Yes. Remember, we say deer ‘resistant’ and not deer ‘proof’. Younger plants may be at greater risk of being eaten and younger deer may eat anything in sight as they learn what they do and do not like. And, of course, the plants are not resistant to being stepped on (or slept on!) by deer or even dogs.
