Tla-o-qui-aht ‘s Meares Island Cultural Centre HALL will be closed as of Monday January 16th-2017 for renovations to begin. The other areas of the upstairs, and some of the downstairs will remain open for staff to work. However due to the repairs needed on the front side (facing the ocean) the Meares Island Preschool will be relocated temporarily to the Health Clinic for at least 2 – 3 months.

We are pleased to inform that Tla-o-qui-aht was successful in acquiring a grant for these important upgrades.

As we undergo this planning, the Opitsaht Fitness Facilities will likely change as well, once we know the renovation plans, we will inform the members on access of the fitness facility as well.

The information for Tla-o-qui-aht is one click away, stay in touch, check your website.

OPITSAHT FITNESS CENTRE – CLOSED

Due to the ren0vations needed at MICC in Opitsaht therefore requiring us to move our Preschool to the Opitsaht Health Clinic temporarily, the Fitness Centre will then be closed for the renovation period.

All users of the facility will be informed via TFN Bulletin of when the facility will re-open. Any current users can call the TFN office for further information 250.725.3350

OPITSAHT COMMUNITY – WORK AHEAD…… Opitsaht residents will notice a lot more work happening in the community over the next several months.

Renovations at MICC, cleanup and removal of debris from the upper evacation site, cemetary clearing, complete basketball court overhaul, and safety areas being tended to.

Dock space, and inactive vessels have been a long standing issue at the community, and we are working with other local means to ensure the safety and accessibility of the community in general. Owners of inactive boats can expect that their vessels will be moved without notice. Several notices have been issued on the problem, and safety and evacuation of the community are the highest of priority. Materials left on the dock will also be removed without notice if these items are not removed ASAP. Materials left in public places are considered abandoned and will be taken out. The dock space is to remain “CLEAR” and accessible at all times.

Due to the increasing problem of dumping, and environmental damage, we are also seeking out survellience in the public areas of the community. In the end the intention is for community, and environmental safety.

We have a shared responsibility with all materials we own, if you have brought the item to your home, you are responsible for the safe and appropriate removal / recycling / or dumping of items you discard. Leaving broken, or unwanted items close-by to the bins is only removing your trash from your view, but it is adding to a community problem. Proper disposal of trash is the responsibility of each home and the individuals. Garbage is a huge cost to the Public Works department, and with cooperation in properly disposing your trash, we could have better and more improved services around YOUR community.

CARE NETWORK

How cold is too cold?

We're experiencing some chilly temperatures on the West Coast!

CARE Network encourages animal guardians to bring all dogs and cats inside. Also, when they're outside, make sure they have an insulated dog or cat house that keeps them warm and dry – straw works well!! Access to daily fresh water and food is a must too. And remember, if you see an animal who needs help contact your Band Administration at 250.725.3350 and speak to Terry Dorward.

“Working together…Strengthening our West Coast Workforce… Locally!”

WEST COAST

EXPO 2017

Mark your calendars…the next West Coast Job Expo is coming to Ucluelet on March 2nd2017! (from 1 to 4pm) at the Ucluelet Community Centre.

Local government and community agencies are working together to make it happen. So far, our team includes: • Alberni Valley Employment Services Centre (AVEC) • Nuu-Chah-nulth Employment & Training Program (NETP) • Clayoquot Biosphere Trust • Ucluelet Chamber of Commerce (UCoC) • District of Ucluelet (DoU)

Our goal is to address issues surrounding sustainable employment by: - Connecting local Employers with local Jobseekers - Conducting a series of Jobseeker Readiness Workshops - Developing an ongoing & current summary of local Labour Market Information (LMI) - valuable tool in assessing, measuring & sustaining community health.

In 2016, Alberni Valley Employment Centre (AVEC) hosted a successful pilot project called ‘West Coast Job Expo’ in Tofino, providing an opportunity for Employers and Jobseekers to meet in person. 28 Exhibitors and over 175 Jobseekers attended. 20 Jobseekers obtained employment as a direct result of attending this event.

In 2017, AVEC plans to provide a separate interview room, and a mobile ‘Employment Centre’ that will be on-site on the day of the event. NETP will continue to sponsor inter-community transportation, catering and venue, same as last year. Clayoquot Biosphere Trust funds are helping to support this very important west coast event.

AVEC delivers the Employment Program of British Columbia, which is funded by the Government of Canada and the Province of British Columbia; funding for NETP is provided in part by the Government of Canada. The “West Coast Job Expo” is a sponsored event and there is no charge for employers or job-seekers wishing to participate.

Watch for Exhibitor Registration forms - to be distributed soon.

Kind regards Ursula Banke West Coast Resource Centre Advisor / Community Liaison Alberni Valley Employment Centre [email protected]
