Treasures from the Yale Film Archive
TREASURES FROM THE YALE FILM ARCHIVE SUNDAY AN ONGOING SERIES OF CLASSIC AND CONTEMPORARY FILMS PRESENTED IN 35MM BY THE YALE FILM STUDY CENTER SEPTEMBER 17, 2017 2:00PM • WHITNEY HUMANITIES CENTER PRESENTED WITH SUPPORT FROM VOLVERVOLVER PAUL L. JOSKOW ’70 M.PHIL., ’72 PH.D. All about mothers, Pedro Almodóvar’s 2006 quiet masterpiece blends tragedy, melodrama, magical realism, and farce in a story of three generations of working-class Spanish women and the secrets they carry between La Mancha and Madrid. Penélope Cruz o. gives the performance of her career as Raimunda, struggling to protect her teenage daughter (Yohana Cobo) while haunted by N the ghost of her estranged mother (Carmen Maura). A.O. Scott said of the film, “To relate the details of the narrative—death, cancer, S 1 E 4 betrayal, parental abandonment, more death—would create an impression of dreariness and woe. But nothing could be further from A S O N the spirit of VOLVER which is buoyant without being flip, and consoling without ever becoming maudlin.” One of Almodóvar’s most assured and mature works, it foregoes the flashy visuals and assertive soundtracks of his earlier comedies, as well as the complex plots of the dramas that immediately preceded it, TALK TO HER and BAD EDUCATION. Other than MATADOR and KIKA, it was his first film to be released in the U.S. under its untranslated Spanish title. Volver means return, and the many returns throughout the film help bring the characters and their director overdue resolutions to unfinished business from the past. -

Contemporary Spain Through Films
Instituto Universitario de Investigación en Estudios Norteamericanos “Benjamin Franklin” CONTEMPORARY SPAIN THROUGH FILMS Language of instruction: Spanish. COURSE DESCRIPTION Cinema is one of the most popular artistic manifestations due to its expressive power and narrative capacity. Film production allows us to gain knowledge about the reality of a country from two perspectives: as a historical document and an aesthetic expression. In this course students will learn about the Spanish film discourse based on the analysis of seven important films in the history of the Spanish cinema (See APPENDIX I). On the other hand, the course aims to make a journey through the history of Spain, from the Civil War to the present, taking as reference film productions on this period. The Spanish film production will be studied from a multidisciplinary perspective in order to analyze the most relevant historical periods of contemporary Spain. In addition, students will have the opportunity to acquire specialized language on film and historiography. It will allow them to improve their oral and written expression in Spanish, as well as to appreciate cinema as a form of artistic and cultural expression. NOTE: This course includes different cultural topics (such as bullfighting, terrorism or nudity) that may hurt the student´s sensibilities. OBJECTIVES Students will learn how to use cinema as a tool for historical and socio-cultural analysis. Prior to viewing each film, we will analyze the historical period, the selection of the film material, and the characteristics of the film as a cultural product of a particular period (director, artistic influences, ideology, actors, attitude, etc.). -
VOLVER a Film by Pedro Almodóvar
Mongrel Media Presents VOLVER a film by Pedro Almodóvar (2006, Spain, 120 mins) Distribution 1028 Queen Street West Toronto, Ontario, Canada, M6J 1H6 Tel: 416-516-9775 Fax: 416-516-0651 E-mail: [email protected] www.mongrelmedia.com Publicity Bonne Smith Star PR Tel: 416-488-4436 Fax: 416-488-8438 E-mail: [email protected] High res stills may be downloaded from: http://www.mongrelmedia.com/press.html SYNOPSIS Three generations of women survive the east wind, fire, insanity, superstition and even death by means of goodness, lies and boundless vitality. They are Raimunda (Pénelope Cruz), who is married to an unemployed labourer and has a teenage daughter (Yohana Cobo); Sole (Lola Dueñas), her sister, who makes a living as a hairdresser; and the mother of both (Carmen Maura), who died in a fire along with her husband. This character appears first to her sister (Chus Lampreave) and then to Sole, although the people with whom she has some unresolved matters are Raimunda and her neighbour in the village, Agustina (Blanca Portillo). VOLVER is not a surrealistic comedy although it may seem so at times. The living and the dead coexist without any discord, causing situations that are either hilarious or filled with a deep, genuine emotion. It’s a film about the culture of death in my native La Mancha. The people there practice it with an admirable naturalness. The way in which the dead continue to be present in their lives, the richness and humanity of their rites mean that the dead never die. VOLVER destroys all the clichés about “black” Spain and offers a Spain that is as real as it is the opposite.
