Foreword erna brodber One afternoon when I was six and in standard 2, sitting quietly while the teacher, Mr. Grant, wrote our assignment on the blackboard, I heard a girl scream as if she were frightened. Mr. Grant must have heard it, too, for he turned as if to see whether that frightened scream had come from one of us, his charges. My classmates looked at me. Which wasn’t strange: I had a reputation for knowing the answer. They must have thought I would know about the scream. As it happened, all I could think about was how strange, just at the time when I needed it, the girl had screamed. I had been swimming through the clouds, unwillingly connected to a small party of adults who were purposefully going somewhere, a destination I sud- denly sensed meant danger for me. Naturally I didn’t want to go any further with them, but I didn’t know how to communicate this to adults and ones intent on doing me harm. -

BOOK REVIEWS G. E.R. LLOYD, Demystifying Mentalities [Themes in the Social Sciences], Cambridge etc.: Cambridge University Press 1990. viii, 156 pp., Bibliography Index. £27.50/£10.95//$49.50/$14.95. Geoffrey Lloyd belongs to that illustrious line of Cambridge classicists who have found anthropology useful for their own work and have then contributed to it. The value of this contribution has been duly recognized by anthropo]ogists, who have asked him to give some of their most important lectures. Two of the four chapters that constitute this book were, in their original form, the 1985 Rivers lecture at Cambridge and the 1987 Frazer lecture in Oxford. Not surprisingly then, this work addresses a question of central interest to anthropologists: 'What is the validity and usefulness of the notion of mentalities?' (p. 1). Lloyd points out that although Uvy-Bruhl's distinction between two 'mentalities' has been much criticized, in fact the idea of different mentalities has been widely adopted in many disciplines, especially in France. The problem is that there is no definition of 'mentality', and the term is used in a variety of senses. Furthermore, which criteria are to be employed in distinguishing between different mentalities is not clear, nor has the question of how mentalities change been addressed. Lloyd sets out to examine the whole question with reference to classical Greek thought, which is so often regarded as the origin of our own scientific rationality. He also attempts to place the development of the ideas within the political and economic setting of the period, so that they are rooted in a particular social context. -

The Evidence of the Senses and the Materiality of Religion
The evidence of the senses and the materiality of religion Webb Keane University of Michigan Religious practices are commonly treated as evidence for something else, such as beliefs. There are a number of problems with privileging beliefs or ideas when trying to define religion. An alternative is to rethink the relationship between the materiality of religious activity and the ideas that have sometimes been taken to define ‘religion’. This approach may also be a productive way to look at religious practices across widely differing contexts without eliminating their fundamentally historical character. When does evidence seem necessary? Certainly not in every instance. But questions of evidence haunt both anthropology and religions. At least this is so to the extent that they place something imperceptible at the heart of their work. The spirit that possesses a medium, that element of the sacrifice which is received by the god, or the faith that speaks through prayer share this with social order, cultural logic, or hegemonic power: they cannot be directly perceived. One need not insist on any particular ontological dichotomy between matter and spirit, or indeed any universal definition of religion, to recognize the ubiquity of the question posed by the words of Berawan prayer: ‘Where are you spirits?’ (Metcalf 1989). To find this a question in need of an answer is to seek evidence in experience for something that, on the face of it, is not to be found there but somewhere else. Yet placing the imperceptible at the heart of religion may obscure certain dimen- sions of that which we want to understand. -

The Ritual Inscription of a Martial Worldview – An Analysis of Liturgical, Developmental and Ecological Dynamics of Adaptation Robin Nürnberger CD MDiv, MSW, RSW (ON) A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the Doctorate in Philosophy degree in Religious Studies Department of Classic and Religious Studies Faculty of Arts University of Ottawa © Robin Nürnberger, Ottawa, Canada, 2018 The Ritual Inscription of a Martial Worldview – An Analysis of Liturgical, Developmental and Ecological Dynamics of Adaptation Abstract This project describes the role of ritual in the basic entrainment processes of Canadian soldiers. Building on the ecological systems theories of Urie Bronfenbrenner and Roy Rappaport, this project construes human adaptation to occur within multiple interdependent planes of ordered biological, sociostructural, psychosocial and symbolic (even transcendent) meanings and interactions within integrated social ecologies or “living systems.” Rappaport’s theory supports the argument that invariant, embodied actions and impulses not encoded by ritual performers establish social order, values, motivations, competencies, dispositions and representational or symbolic meanings— understood within this project as worldview—circulating within and regulating integrated human ecologies. Ordered sequences of invariant actions and impulses have also come to be conveyed within human phylogenic and ontogenetic developmental processes. This project specifically explores the hypothesis that embodied ritual dynamics pervade the basic entrainment rite of Canadian soldiers. The analysis draws on the ritual theory of Rappaport and the psychosocial developmental theory of Erik Erikson to describe the manner in which innate social regulating impulses and liturgically ordered ritual processes are exploited, in conjunction with predictable human psychosocial developmental imperatives, to build foundational martial dispositions, a spontaneous impulse to radical solidarity and a robust, homogeneous and multivocalic worldview in Canadian soldiers. -

We shall define rituals, discuss their functional aspects and see how they operate as vehicles of symbolic communication. To be able to describe rituals in a symbolic frame, we will also understand what symbols mean, how they operate within human social life. The student will thus gather understanding of the utilitarian as well as abstract nature of rituals. 2.2 SYMBOLS AND SOCIAL LIFE Human life consists of a series of symbolic communications that enables us to weave a meaningful world around us. If we reflect, there is almost nothing in our lives that is not symbolically constructed – our language, our relationships, our material culture and the environment. Everything is made meaningful by us and not by any intrinsic property that it may have, but by the meaning bestowed on it by the cultural system. According to Clifford Geertz (1973), sacred symbols instil deep emotional moods in people that in turn may lead to strong motivations for action. -

Sociocultural evolution 1 Sociocultural evolution Sociocultural evolution(ism) is an umbrella term for theories of cultural evolution and social evolution, describing how cultures and societies have changed over time. Note that "sociocultural evolution" is not an equivalent of "sociocultural development" (unified processes of differentiation and integration involving increases in sociocultural complexity), as sociocultural evolution also encompasses sociocultural transformations accompanied by decreases of complexity (degeneration) as well as ones not accompanied by any significant changes of sociocultural complexity (cladogenesis).[1] Thus, sociocultural evolution can be defined as "the process by which structural reorganization is affected through time, eventually producing a form or structure which is qualitatively different from the ancestral form.... Evolutionism then becomes the scientific activity of finding nomothetic explanations for the occurrence of such structural changes".[2] Although such theories typically provide models for understanding the relationship between technologies, social structure, the values of a society, and how and why they change with time, they vary as to the extent to which they describe specific mechanisms of variation and social change. Historically, Europeans had tried to explain the meaning of "primitive" societies, with some arguing that primitive peoples had degenerated from a "barbarous" to an even lower "savage" state. These observers often saw European society as symbolizing the highest state of "civilization."[3] Over time, important commentators like Edward Burnett Tylor, Lewis Henry Morgan, Franz Boas, Leslie White, and Julian Steward elaborated on this thinking with theories from unilinear evolution to the "culture history" approach.[3] Sociocultural modeling[4] is an umbrella term for theories of cultural and social evolution, which aims to describe how cultures and societies have developed over time. -

Schultz St. Cloud State University [email protected] Abstract Anthropologists contend that the organism-environment connections responsible for human evolution are indirect—mediated by culture. This chapter reviews influential twentieth-century anthropological interpretations of the cultural mediation of human adaptations to environments, arguing that ethnography and other qualitative forms of analysis reveal important phenomena overlooked by quantitative analysts committed to methodological individualism. It highlights work by post-positivist
