Bu bağlamda Anadolu’nun tarihsel ve toplumsal geçmişi de diğerleri kadar çok sorunu aydınlatmakta, bu çalışma da bu konuya ilişkin bir parça sunmayı amaçlamaktadır. Kaynaklar tarafından bildirilen tarihsel olgular, olaylar ve diğer günümüze kadar ulaşan kalıntılar tarihsel ve toplumbilimsel karşılaştırmalı yöntemle yorumlanacaktır. Akhamenid idaresindeki Kuzeybatı Anadolu kendi uygarlıkları, Trakya ve Grek anakarası arasında kültürel etkileşimin olduğu bir bölge ve aynı zamanda da ayıran bir sınırdı. Bu çok kültürlü bağlamda ilerlemeci düşünceler olgulara yönelik olarak ortaya çıktı. Öğretme ve öğrenme de sorunsallaştırıldı ve konular değişiklik gösterdi. Bu değişimle birlikte Daskyleion Satraplığı’ndaki seçkinler ve diğerleri okullara daha fazla ilgi duymaya başladı. In this regard historico – sociological past of Anatolia gives much perspective as others and this work intended to figure it out. Historical facts, events and other artificial informations provided by sources are subject of interpretation within a historico sociological comparison method. Troughout an Achaemenid administration in northwestern region of Anatolia kept its importance of being a cultural interaction zone and a border between Anatolian civilizations, Thracians and mainland Greeks. In this multicultural context much of progressive ideas occured through facts. Teaching and learning was also to considered as problematics and subjects were in changed as well. Within the shift elites or people in Daskyleion territory were gave much attention to schooling. The aS trap Of Western Anatolia And The Greeks Abstract This dissertation explores the extent to which Persian policies in the western satrapies originated from the provincial capitals in the Anatolian periphery rather than from the royal centers in the Persian heartland in the fifth ec ntury BC. I begin by establishing that the Persian administrative apparatus was a product of a grand reform initiated by Darius I, which was aimed at producing a more uniform and centralized administrative infrastructure. In the following chapter I show that the provincial administration was embedded with chancellors, scribes, secretaries and military personnel of royal status and that the satrapies were periodically inspected by the Persian King or his loyal agents, which allowed to central authorities to monitory the provinces. In chapter three I delineate the extent of satrapal authority, responsibility and resources, and conclude that the satraps were supplied with considerable resources which enabled to fulfill the duties of their office. After the power dynamic between the Great Persian King and his provincial governors and the nature of the office of satrap has been analyzed, I begin a diachronic scrutiny of Greco-Persian interactions in the fifth century BC.

Traditionally, the employment of Greek soldiers by the Persian Achaemenid Empire and the Kingdom of Egypt during this period has been understood to indicate the military weakness of these polities and the superiority of Greek hoplites over their Near Eastern counterparts. I demonstrate that the purported superiority of Greek heavy infantry has been exaggerated by Greco-Roman authors. Furthermore, close examination of Greek mercenary service reveals that the recruitment of Greek soldiers was not the purpose of Achaemenid foreign policy in Greece and the Aegean, but was instead an indication of the political subordination of prominent Greek citizens and poleis, conducted through the social institution of xenia, to Persian satraps and kings.

Barsine, Daughter of Artabazus Barsine was by birth a minor princess of the Achaemenid Empire of the Persians, for her father, Artabazus, was the son of a Great King’s daughter.197 It is known that his father was Pharnabazus, who had married Apame, the daughter of Artaxerxes II, some time between 392 - 387BC.198 Artabazus was a senior Persian Satrap and courtier and was latterly renowned for his loyalty first to Darius, then to Alexander. Perhaps this was the outcome of a bad experience of the consequences of disloyalty earlier in his long career. In 358BC Artaxerxes III Ochus had upon his accession ordered the western Satraps to disband their mercenary armies, but this edict had eventually edged Artabazus into an unsuccessful revolt. He spent some years in exile at Philip’s court during Alexander’s childhood, starting in about 352BC and extending until around 349BC,199 at which time he became reconciled with the Great King. It is likely that his daughter Barsine and the rest of his immediate family accompanied him in his exile, so it is feasible that Barsine knew Alexander when they were both still children. Plutarch relates that she had received a “Greek upbringing”, though in point of fact this education could just as well have been delivered in Artabazus’ Satrapy of Hellespontine Phrygia, where the population was predominantly ethnically Greek. As a young girl, Barsine appears to have married Mentor,200 a Greek mercenary general from Rhodes. Artabazus had previously married the sister of this Rhodian, so Barsine may have been Mentor’s niece.

The Macedonian nobility were traditionally fine horsemen, hut the infantry was poorly armed and badly organised until the reign of Alexander II in 369/8 B.C. This king formed a small royal standing army; it consisted of a cavalry force of Macedonian nobles, which he named the 'hetairoi' (or Companion]! cavalry, and an infantry body drawn from the commoners and trained to fight in phalangite formation: these he called the »pezetairoi» (or foot-companions). Philip II (359-336 B.C.) expanded the kingdom and greatly increased the manpower resources for war. Towards the end of his reign he started preparations for the invasion of the Persian empire and levied many more Macedonians than had hitherto been involved in the king's wars. In order to attach these men more closely to himself he extended the meaning of the terms »hetairol» and 'pezetairoi to refer to the whole bodies of Macedonian cavalry and heavy infantry which served under him on his campaigning.

He defeated the Spartans in the sea battle at Cnidus (394 BC) and paved the way for Persian ascendancy in Asia Minor. He later led two abortive campaigns in Egypt. Family Pharnabazus was an official of royal descent in the Achaemenid Empire.1His birth is dated to before 444 BC.2 Between 414 and 412 BC he inherited the office of satrap of Hellespontine Phrygia from his father Pharnaces II.3 He had a legitimate brother, whose name is unattested,4 while another, illegitimate, brother and his uncle, Susamithras, are also mentioned.5 He was married to Apame (387 BC),6 daughter of king Artaxerxes II (404-351 BC) and had three sons: Artabazus III,7 later satrap of Phrygia (362-330 BC), Oxythres and Dibictus.8 His heir, Ariobarzanes (387-362 BC) belonged to the same family; it is unclear, however, whether he was his legitimate brother or an older legitimate son from an unknown spouse.9 He also had an illegitimate son by one Parapita.10 His family controlled estates around Dascylium, where he had his palace on a naturally fortified position, surrounded by hamlets and paradises.

    The Kyoto Journal of AncientDascylium: History ,An Vol. Overview12(2012) of the Achaemenid Satrapal City 1 《Article》 Dascylium: An Overview of the Achaemenid Satrapal City Takuji ABE 【Summary】 Dascylium was an Achaemenid administrative centre, and a satrapal seat of north-western Anatolia. This paper investigates this satrapal capital’s status, particularly its cultural association with the Persian heartland, and in addition serves to compare Dascylium to similar studies of Lydia, and its capital of Sardis. Archaeological evidence reveals that Dascylium’s governors did not inherit monumental structures which they could adopt for their use as public buildings, despite the fact that history of the city dates back to the pre-Persian period. Instead, a new landscape evolved that we assume is the ideal satrapal centre, which can now be studied as a result of the excavations at Dascylium. Among them is included the most intriguing find; an assemblage of bullae – clay lumps bearing seal impressions – recovered from the site of the acropolis. A great number of king’s legends shown on the bullae likely point to an intimate relationship between Persian sovereigns and subjects in the capital of their westernmost satrapy. The motifs of impressions also help reconstruct our image of cultural life as it was experienced by the Persian immigrants; for instance, the worship of Ahura Mazda, and hunting in paradeisoi. The reflections gleaned from these materials seem to represent those aspects of life colonists enjoyed at the empire’s centre and thus brought with them to their new homeland. Some evidence also suggests the persistence of local cultures, but in a much reduced form compared to what is seen in Lydian or Sardian studies.
