The primary emphasis is on the Mall Aero Services Photograph SP 0002 and Capitol Hill but other views, all west of the Anacostia River, are included. Images are grouped by location, but Collection, 1930s. described individually. Consists of 43 glass-plate images taken by Gideon Hawley Baxter (1854-1928), primarily from 1913 to 1919. Joseph E. Bishop Photograph Consists of about 350 photographs taken by Joseph E. Bishop during the 1920s; primarily of Old Downtown SP 0004 Collection. Washington, but also includes the Georgetown, Foggy Bottom, and Southwest neighborhoods. Consists of about 900 photographs and research notes assembled by James Borchert during research for his Ph. D James Borchert Alley Life in dissertation "American mini-ghettoes : alleys, alley dwellings and alley dwellers in Washington, D.C., 1850-1970". SP 0005 Washington D.C. Photograph Series I photographs include images gathered from various archives and include some photographs by famous Collection. photographers. Series II contains photographs Borchert took in 1972 to document conditions at that time Consists of thousands of photographic prints and negatives, slides, and glass plates from 1890s-1950 (1918-1950). Gordon B. Bradley Photograph SP 0006 The photographs in the collection are mainly of Washington, D.C. and vicinity, and include many views of buildings, Collection. monuments, and parks. Other subjects include aircraft, boats, bridges, parades, people, and streets. Consists of over 500 black and white photographs, taken from 1946 through 1952. It is a documentary survey of Bert Sheldon Photograph places of worship in Washington, D.C. Consists of 116 35-mm slides taken by Carl Feiss between 1959 and 1977 of scenes in the redevelopment area of "The Carl Feiss "Southwest Island" part of Southwest Washington (i.e., north of the Anacostia River). At the time he took these photographs, Feiss SP 0011 Washington " 35mm Slide was Chief of the Planning and Engineering Branch of the Division of Slum Clearance of HHFA, predecessor the Collection, 1957-1977. Consists of 96 photographs, two cartoons, and a poster, documenting various aspects of Washington life from the Raymond Gallagher Photograph 1930s to the 1970s; most were reproduced in Washington newspapers. The photographs were donated to the SP 0014 Collection Historical Society in 1984 by Raymond Gallagher who obtained them from the widow of William C. Archibald Dudleigh Jewell Slide Consists of 277 35mm color slides taken in the Washington area by Archibald Dudleigh Jewell, 1950s-1960s. The SP 0021 Collection. finding aid is arranged in broad subject categories. Miriam E. Johnson Slide Consists of 1685 35mm slides taken by Miriam E. Johnson from May 1949 to May 1987 of various Washington, D.C. SP 0022 Collection. scenes and events. Consists of over 650 identified lantern slides representing scenes in the Washington D.C. area from 1808 through SP 0025 General Lantern Slide Collection 1935. Consists of 53 colored slides, 42 are "A Walk Around the National Capital," the remaining 11 slides are "Art and the A Walk Around the Nation's Capitol and the Library of Congress." The first 42 are significant in that they are Kodachrome color shots of the city. SP 0026 Capital, 1939 The other 11 slides are taken from publications of the time. "A Walk Around the National Capital" begins at the White House, proceeds down Pennsylvania Avenue to the Capitol, west on the Mall , and back to the White House. John Meigs Glass-plate Consists of 43 glass-plate negatives taken by John Meigs, ca. 1896, primarily of the Washington, D.C, area, including SP 0027 Photograph Collection several views of Rock Creek Park and the Potomac River. William H. Seaman Photograph Consists of about 150 images taken by scientist and amateur photographer William H. Seaman, 1885-1895. Views SP 0030 Collection include Logan Circle, Dupont Circle, Rock Creek, Downtown, Takoma Park, and Columbia Heights. Thornton Owen Photograph Consists of 83 photographs collected by Thornton Owen, of Washington street scenes and public buildings, ca. 1800- SP 0031 Collection 1950. Consists of 25 photographs of the Tanner family and friends and Washington scenes. The first 19 photographs are James A.Tanner Family interior and external shots of identified persons in unidentified locations. Some photographs are identified as being SP 0032 Photograph Collection taken by flashlight, probably meaning some sort of brief, bright light was used. The 1901 city directory also shows Edward W. Tanner, U. S. Army, living at the M Street address. Consists of about 4000 color slides taken by Emil Press, 1959-1979. The images are mainly of Washington, D.C. south SP 0034 Emil A. Press Slide Collection of Florida Avenue, but some outlying areas are included. Press often photographed buildings that were slated for, or in the process of demolition. The card index to the collection is arranged by both location and subject. Consists of 327 photographs taken by the National Park Service between 1926 and 1936, illustrating the small land Reservations Photograph areas originally "reserved" for use by the City of Washington. These photographs cover those Reservations whose SP 0035 Collection jurisdiction was transferred in 1948 from the Park Service to the D.C. government. They were donated to the Columbia Historical Society in 1981. Washington D.C. 1968 Riot Contains nine United Press International photographs taken during the April 1968 riots in northeast Washington, D.C., SP 0036 Photograph Collection following the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Street Lighting Photograph Consists of 176 photographs of street lighting collected by Sarah Noreen to illustrate her research study, "Public Street SP 0037 Collection Illumination in Washington, D.C.: An Illustrated History", GW Washington Studies, no. 2 Clarence R. Shoemaker Consists of images taken during the first third of the 20th Century of the Potomac Gorge area where the Shoemaker SP 0038 Photograph Collection, ca. family purchased "Minnie's" (Minniesha) Island in 1923.Includes possibly unique images taken during the first third of 1920-1930 the 20th Century of the Potomac Gorge area. Jeremiah J. Spaulding Consists of 2300 color photographs of Washington, D.C. street scenes and government buildings, taken by Jeremiah J. SP 0039 Photograph Collection. Spaulding between 1985 and 1992. Collection Collection Name Collection Description Identifier Zack Spratt Washington Scenes Consists of photographs of over 200 locations in Washington taken by Zack Spratt between 1920 and 1960. Although SP 0040 Photograph Collection, 1920- there are a few human interest type photographs (newsboys, KKK parade), the focus is primarily on the buildings, 1960 monuments, and streets of Washington. Zack Spratt Washington, D.C. Consists of views of photographs taken by Zaccheus Spratt of about 90 Washington bridge sites. The oldest photograph SP 0041 Bridges Photograph Collection, was taken in the 1920s but the majority are clustered in the period 1945-50.
