NEW YORK MEDICAL COLLEGE AT-A-GLANCE

NYMC AT-A-GLANCE

Founded in 1860, Medical College (NYMC) is one of the largest private health sciences colleges in the U.S. with nearly 1,700 students and 330 residents and clinical fellows, more than 2,640 faculty members and 23,500 living alumni. NYMC joined the and University System (TCUS) in 2011 and is located in Valhalla, N.Y., in Westchester County. TCUS is the largest university system under Jewish auspices in the U.S. and the country’s largest private educator of physicians graduating slightly less than four percent of all the nation’s M.D.s and D.O.s.

Rooted in a proud legacy of inclusion, NYMC’s humanistic approach is a fundamental component of the exceptional academics and meaningful hands-on experiences provided by each of the five schools on the NYMC campus: the School of Medicine (SOM), the Graduate School of Basic Medical Sciences (GSBMS), the School of Health Sciences and Practice (SHSP), the Touro College of Dental Medicine at NYMC (TouroCDM) and the Touro College School of Health Sciences’ nursing program at NYMC. Research at the College is notable in the areas of cancer, cardiovascular disease, infectious diseases, kidney disease, the neurosciences, disaster medicine and vaccine development.

With a network of affiliated hospitals and clinical practices, NYMC provides a wide variety of clinical training opportunities throughout the New York-- region.

New York Medical College is located on a lush 54-acre suburban campus. A fixture in Westchester County in the lower Hudson Valley, approximately 15 miles north of New York City, NYMC provides an ideal base for students who wish to study and conduct research in the clinical and biomedical sciences. Our roots go back to 1860 with the founding of the Homeopathic Medical College of New York. NYMC’s identity evolved through mergers and alignments with New York City-based institutions, such as Metropolitan Hospital, Flower Free Surgical Hospital and Fifth Avenue Hospital. Serving a large and diverse geographic area and population, NYMC maintains close ties with local communities through valuable affiliations with hospitals and other health care facilities in the area. Having local physicians and health commissioners among our faculty is one example of how NYMC and the region enjoy a symbiotic relationship—each serves and supports the other, and our students and the surrounding communities are the beneficiaries. 3 PREPARING FUTURE LEADERS • A Center of Excellence in Precision Responses to Bioterrorism and Disasters provides expertise and leadership in preventing, diagnosing and treating threats specific to biological and chemical terrorism and public health emergencies and to developing medical countermeasures.

Our educational philosophy prioritizes emotionally-connected patient care and prepares our students for this approach from their first day. They experience frequent face-to face interaction with patients in such clinical settings as local primary care medical practices during the Foundations of Clinical Medicine Course and clinical clerkships at affiliated hospital sites; La Casita de la Salud, a student-run clinic in the East Harlem neighborhood of Manhattan; and with a standardized patient pool in our Clinical Skills and Simulation Center. These hands-on experiences equip our students with strong interpersonal and clinical foundations upon which to build their careers. SOM facts

NYMC GRADUATE SCHOOL OF BASIC MEDICAL SCIENCES (GSBMS)

Whether a student aims to discover the next life-changing drug or vaccine, investigate the workings of the body’s vascular system, educate the future generation of researchers or manage a science-focused non-profit, we offer M.S., Ph.D. and M.D./Ph.D. programs to meet their goal. Our Accelerated Master’s Program offers two years of coursework in just one; and graduates of this program have a distinct advantage when applying to medical school, enjoying an acceptance rate of 85 percent. Our M.S. programs offer options for research training, non-research thesis or project-based internships in industry. The newly launched Professional Science Master’s track is designed for students interested in pursuing careers in the pharmaceutical, biotechnology, or other biomedical science industries – or in the government or not-for-profit sectors related to these fields. A new Master of Science in Clinical Laboratory Sciences program trains professionals to work in medical or industrial/pharmaceutical laboratories. Our Integrated Ph.D. program focuses on core scientific knowledge and the interrelatedness of the basic sciences before students declare a specific field of study.
