Where Knowledge and Values Meet NEW YORK MEDICAL COLLEGE AT-A-GLANCE NYMC AT-A-GLANCE Founded in 1860, New York Medical College (NYMC) is one of the largest private health sciences colleges in the U.S. with nearly 1,700 students and 330 residents and clinical fellows, more than 2,640 faculty members and 23,500 living alumni. NYMC joined the Touro College and University System (TCUS) in 2011 and is located in Valhalla, N.Y., in Westchester County. TCUS is the largest university system under Jewish auspices in the U.S. and the country’s largest private educator of physicians graduating slightly less than four percent of all the nation’s M.D.s and D.O.s. Rooted in a proud legacy of inclusion, NYMC’s humanistic approach is a fundamental component of the exceptional academics and meaningful hands-on experiences provided by each of the five schools on the NYMC campus: the School of Medicine (SOM), the Graduate School of Basic Medical Sciences (GSBMS), the School of Health Sciences and Practice (SHSP), the Touro College of Dental Medicine at NYMC (TouroCDM) and the Touro College School of Health Sciences’ nursing program at NYMC. Research at the College is notable in the areas of cancer, cardiovascular disease, infectious diseases, kidney disease, the neurosciences, disaster medicine and vaccine development. With a network of affiliated hospitals and clinical practices, NYMC provides a wide variety of clinical training opportunities throughout the New York-New Jersey-Connecticut region. 1 ACADEMIC LEADERSHIP Alan Kadish, M.D. Edward C. A fixture in Westchester County in the lower Hudson Valley, approximately 15 miles north of New York City, NYMC provides an ideal base for students who wish to study and conduct research in the clinical and biomedical sciences. Our roots go back to 1860 with the founding of the Homeopathic Medical College of New York. NYMC’s identity evolved through mergers and alignments with New York City-based institutions, such as Metropolitan Hospital, Flower Free Surgical Hospital and Fifth Avenue Hospital. Serving a large and diverse geographic area and population, NYMC maintains close ties with local communities through valuable affiliations with hospitals and other health care facilities in the area. Having local physicians and health commissioners among our faculty is one example of how NYMC and the region enjoy a symbiotic relationship—each serves and supports the other, and our students and the surrounding communities are the beneficiaries. 3 PREPARING FUTURE LEADERS • A Center of Excellence in Precision Responses to Bioterrorism and Disasters provides expertise and leadership in preventing, diagnosing and treating threats specific to biological and chemical terrorism and public health emergencies and to developing medical countermeasures. • NYMC unveiled the state-of-the-art 21,000 • NYMC launched a transformative square-foot Clinical Skills and Simulation biotechnology incubator, BioInc@NYMC— Center, where students receive hands-on the only incubator of its kind in the region training in replicated clinical settings to located on a health sciences college campus. hone clinical skills in a safe and controlled environment before treating actual patients. • NYMC saw an increase in clinical training opportunities by establishing academic affiliations with Saint Michael’s Medical Center in Newark, N.J., Brookdale University Hospital and Medical Center in Brooklyn, N.Y., Good Samaritan Hospital in Suffern, N.Y., Rome Memorial Hospital in Rome, N.Y., and the Beckley VA Medical Center in West Virginia. • NYMC and Westchester Medical Center Health Network (WMCHealth) signed a 12-year Academic Affiliation Agreement to strengthen the academic medicine programs, clinical care and research practices of both organizations. • NYMC acquired 19 Skyline Drive, a 248,000 square-foot, five-story building providing essential space for offices and new programs. • Touro College of Dental Medicine • The Dr. Edward F. and Mrs. Anna M.
