Criteria for Admission to the Physical Therapy Program

Admission to the Physical therapy program is based on three main factors: academic ability, professional readiness, and suitability for problem-based learning (PBL). Academic ability refers to the applicant’s demonstrated skill in academic learning. It is assessed primarily through an analysis of college transcripts and GRE scores, recommendations from college professors, and the content of the student essay. In general, the greatest weight is given to grades in prerequisite courses and math and science courses. However, the overall academic history of the student is important. Average GPA and GRE scores are listed in the table below. These are provided for informational purposes only; they should not be taken to imply that if an applicant’s scores are at or above these averages, he or she will definitely be accepted. Academic ability is only one factor that is assessed.

Professional readiness refers to the applicant’s fitness to become a physical therapist and includes such characteristics as personal integrity, caring personality, service to others, and commitment to pursuing a career in physical therapy. Life experiences and physical therapy experiences are evaluated through analysis of the application, essay, recommendations, and résumé.

Suitability for PBL is essential for our program, since the majority of learning of patient examination, evaluation, and treatment is carried out using this educational model. This is evaluated through the student essay and, previous student coursework, and academic and personal experiences that demonstrate evidence of the characteristics needed for success in PBL. Applicants should understand what PBL is; they should be self-directed and able to learn even without an externally provided structure; they should be resourceful and good at using the library and technology to research academic issues. Finally, and perhaps most importantly, they should be willing and able to learn together with other students in small groups.
