2015 Catalog CATEGORYRANDALL REINVENTED From the moment I plugged into the first hand wired head that Mike Fortin had sent me, I knew he was the world’s new “GURU OF GAIN”. The focused, tight sound was so amazingly transparent for having so much gain and the transients were lightning fast- like nothing I had ever heard… and I’ve heard them all. This year offers new products in all series and categories as Mike and I push to deliver the best products possible for the discerning heavy player. PERFORMED IDENTITIES: HEAVY METAL MUSICIANS BETWEEN 1984 AND 1991 Bradley C. Klypchak A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY May 2007 Committee: Dr. Jeffrey A. Brown, Advisor Dr. John Makay Graduate Faculty Representative Dr. Ron E. Shields Dr. Don McQuarie © 2007 Bradley C. Klypchak All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Dr. Jeffrey A. Brown, Advisor Between 1984 and 1991, heavy metal became one of the most publicly popular and commercially successful rock music subgenres. The focus of this dissertation is to explore the following research questions: How did the subculture of heavy metal music between 1984 and 1991 evolve and what meanings can be derived from this ongoing process? How did the contextual circumstances surrounding heavy metal music during this period impact the performative choices exhibited by artists, and from a position of retrospection, what lasting significance does this particular era of heavy metal merit today? A textual analysis of metal- related materials fostered the development of themes relating to the selective choices made and performances enacted by metal artists. These themes were then considered in terms of gender, sexuality, race, and age constructions as well as the ongoing negotiations of the metal artist within multiple performative realms. Occurring at the juncture of art and commerce, heavy metal music is a purposeful construction. Metal musicians made performative choices for serving particular aims, be it fame, wealth, or art. These same individuals worked within a greater system of influence. Metal bands were the contracted employees of record labels whose own corporate aims needed to be recognized.

After all, with some 90 + stations responding to our sur- vey, it's basically your window on RockWorld as it went down this past year. The first year of any new business is hell on wheels, (Groanong, creaking, barking dog sound efx, please) and we've seen quite a parade in '87. When I look back over my final comments last year (after nine issues), it sounded as if we had moved mountains. And in a way we had, starting from scratch to a full service publication some 140 stations deep. But in the 12 months since, it has become readily apparent that we were barely walking then. We've extended our reporter roster well past the 200 mark; Our New Alternative and Hard Rock sections have inspired numerous imitators, and our combi- nation of high technology and people power has effectively re -defined what a tip sheet can and will be in the years to come.

FEATURE DOKKEN THETHE BESTBEST OFOF ENEMIESENEMIES The idea that people playing in bands together hate each other’s guts is as old as the hills. The difference withDokken guitarist George Lynch and the band’s singer Don Dokken was that they didn’t care who knew it. • 80S Heavy Metal As a Community of Creativity, Resistance and Difference
Boundaries and Ties: The Place of Metal Music in Communities The Biannual International Society for Metal Music Studies Conference at the University of Victoria, June 9-11, 2017 Back to the Culture: 80s Heavy Metal as a Community of Creativity, Resistance and Difference Andy R. Brown (Bath Spa University), Kevin Ebert (Xavier University) and Ross Hagen (Utah Valley University). Panel Proposal: This panel seeks to go back to the eighties in order to re-examine and re-evaluate heavy metal music and its sub-culture. During this decade heavy metal was claimed as the ‘dominant genre of American music’, with Rolling Stone pronouncing it the new ‘mainstream of rock and roll’. But, as a national survey found, while 10 million ‘liked or strongly liked’ heavy metal – 19 million ‘strongly disliked’ it. A possible reason for this majority-perception is that, unlike other youth cultures, the relationship between the music of heavy metal and its fandom has been central to its coherence as a youth- formation, meaning that when it experienced a period of commercial success it retained a subversive edge. Also, despite (or maybe because of) its popularity in this period, heavy metal was subjected to a sustained elite-initiated campaign of mass-mediated ‘moral panic’ that resulted in Senate hearings and legal-suits calling for de facto censorship of the music and institutional repression of its youth culture. It was in response to these initiatives– and notable political and academic support for them – that scholars, such as Weinstein and Walser, sought to defend and explicate the music culture as part of a complex musical genre, made up of many sub-genres, that had its roots in the early 1970s.

  • The Hardest Working Slacker in the World
1 The hardest Working slacker in the World t wasn’t easy for a seven- year- old boy to procure radioactive material in Bourbon County, Kentucky, during the seven- Ities. So after careful consideration and much research, I de- cided to get struck by lightning. On a muggy summer evening, as heat lightning fried through ominous purple clouds, I eased the screen door shut and started toward the back of our horse farm. Near the rear property line of our fifty- acre farm, a dead tree stood alone on a barren hill, normally a perfect setting for saving imaginary compatriots from an evil overlord’s noose. But that evening, instead of pulling off a daring rescue, I would use what I called the Tree of Sorrow to offer myself up to thunderbolts from the heavens. In preparation for this experiment, I had loaded a Boy Scouts canteen, a cherry Pop- Tart, a tattered spiral notebook with a red cover, my metal orthodontic headgear, and a guitar pick in my backpack. The canteen and snack were a nod to sword- and- sorcery novels, where the hero packed for long quests powercord_i_x_1_308.indd 1 5/30/12 11:36 AM 2 Power Chord accordingly. I didn’t have mutton, mead, or ale, so tap water and foil- wrapped goodies would suffice. The notebook was falling apart from use, the wire spiral distended and unevenly spaced. I had used a ruler and multiple colored pencils to rigorously document scientific examples of origin stories in which ordinary dudes transformed into larger- than- life figures, capable of unimaginable feats.
