PERFORMED IDENTITIES: HEAVY METAL MUSICIANS BETWEEN 1984 AND 1991 Bradley C. Klypchak A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY May 2007 Committee: Dr. Jeffrey A. Brown, Advisor Dr. John Makay Graduate Faculty Representative Dr. Ron E. Shields Dr. Don McQuarie © 2007 Bradley C. Klypchak All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Dr. Jeffrey A. Brown, Advisor Between 1984 and 1991, heavy metal became one of the most publicly popular and commercially successful rock music subgenres. The focus of this dissertation is to explore the following research questions: How did the subculture of heavy metal music between 1984 and 1991 evolve and what meanings can be derived from this ongoing process? How did the contextual circumstances surrounding heavy metal music during this period impact the performative choices exhibited by artists, and from a position of retrospection, what lasting significance does this particular era of heavy metal merit today? A textual analysis of metal- related materials fostered the development of themes relating to the selective choices made and performances enacted by metal artists. These themes were then considered in terms of gender, sexuality, race, and age constructions as well as the ongoing negotiations of the metal artist within multiple performative realms. Occurring at the juncture of art and commerce, heavy metal music is a purposeful construction. Metal musicians made performative choices for serving particular aims, be it fame, wealth, or art. These same individuals worked within a greater system of influence. Metal bands were the contracted employees of record labels whose own corporate aims needed to be recognized.

It's four in the morning and frcm where we sit, this Final Issue looks like a keeper. We've put a ton of time and energyinto this particular edition, and we think you'll have lots of fun with the overview. After all, with some 90 + stations responding to our sur- vey, it's basically your window on RockWorld as it went down this past year. The first year of any new business is hell on wheels, (Groanong, creaking, barking dog sound efx, please) and we've seen quite a parade in '87. When I look back over my final comments last year (after nine issues), it sounded as if we had moved mountains. And in a way we had, starting from scratch to a full service publication some 140 stations deep. But in the 12 months since, it has become readily apparent that we were barely walking then. We've extended our reporter roster well past the 200 mark; Our New Alternative and Hard Rock sections have inspired numerous imitators, and our combi- nation of high technology and people power has effectively re -defined what a tip sheet can and will be in the years to come.

FEATURE DOKKEN THETHE BESTBEST OFOF ENEMIESENEMIES The idea that people playing in bands together hate each other’s guts is as old as the hills. The difference withDokken guitarist George Lynch and the band’s singer Don Dokken was that they didn’t care who knew it. Paul Elliott talks to both musos about a lifelong mistrust and how their volatile relationship still managed to yield 20 million album sales! FOR ONE OF THE great rock bands of the ’80s there was classic album ‘Blackout’. A year later, with Dokken’s always a problem. No matter how high they flew, selling future not guaranteed, George auditioned for Ozzy millions of albums and playing on the world’s biggest Osbourne, but lost out to Jake E. Lee. It was another stages, there was undeniably something rotten at the heartbreak for the guitarist whose earlier band, The core of Dokken, a bitter feud between the singer who Boyz, had been courted by Gene Simmons before Van gave the band its name, and the guitar hero who never Halen stole their thunder. liked the vocalist in the first place and grew to dislike him A change of fortune came when Cliff Burnstein, even more as fame, money, ego and drugs took hold. co-manager of Def Leppard, signed Dokken and got Don Dokken and George Lynch made some great them a deal with major label Elektra.
