The traditional narrative of French literary history describes the vernacular canon as built on the imitation of the ancients. However, this dissertation demonstrates that Early Modern French canon formation also depends, to a startling extent, on claims of inter-vernacular literary theft. Throughout the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, a central preoccupation of French authors, translators, and literary theorists was the repatriation of the romance genre. Romance was portrayed as a cornerstone of French literary patrimony that Italian and Spanish authors had stolen. The repatriation of individual romance texts entailed a skillful co-opting of the language of humanist philology, alongside practices of translation and continuation usually associated with the medieval period. By looking at romance translation as part of a project of national canon formation, this dissertation sheds new light on the role that chivalric romance plays in national and international politics. -

Rhetoric, Poetics and History Machaut's Prise d 'Alixandre and the anonymous Geste des dues de Bouraoane Philip E. Bennett University ifEdinburah From among the records of a century which sawall the 'grans merveilles' and the 'biau fait d'armes' which fuelled the four books of Froissart's Chroniques,l a decision to concentrate on Machaut's account of the 'side show' of Pierre de Lusignan's crusade to Egypt (1365) and on a pseudo-epic poem giving a highly biased version of the Armagnac- Burgundian conflict of c. 1398- 1411, culminating in the shorr·lived Anglo-Burgundian victory at Saint-Cloud, requires a little explanation. The initial motivation for studying these comparatively littl e ~ known texts comes from the simple fact of their presenting history in verse at a time when historiography was increasingly dominated by the prose model established by the Grandes Chroniques de France, including early mises en prose oJchansons de geste, and consecrated by a series of great writers of hi story from Jean Ie Bel to Philippe de Com mines. To that extent this investigation extends one, on which I have been engaged for some time, into the way rhetoric shapes the intergeneric relationships of epic, romance and verse·chronicle in texts of the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. For reasons that will become clear a continued comparison of La Geste des dues de Bourgogne with chansons de geste composed between ca IISO and ca 1250 remains pertinent. although putting it back in the cultural context of the early fifteenth century will, I hope, contribute to the revision of a major myth of 'Whiggish' literary history: that prose is the natural vehicle for narrative, especially historical and pseudo-historical narrative. -

Gaumer III Director Second Reader Received by: Dr. Arthur Lane Director, Committee on Honors Sir Gawain of the Court of King Arthur: A Study in the Metamorphosis of a Hero To readers of the Arthurian tales the mention of King Arthur brings to mind a myriad of other names such as Lancelot, Galahad, Perceval, Gareth, and Gawain; heroes whose exploits comprise the substance of the legend of Arthur. Much like the twelve peers of Charlemagne, the knights of King Arthur's court and heroic individuals whose legends are interwoven and crossed into a single tapestry by association with the ruler of a mighty realm. In fact, critics have speculated that the Arthurian saga is very simple in its essential form. Certainly it is the tales of the heroes who have been attached to the story of Arthur that form the bulk of :he legend familiar to the reader of 1 Malory. Of these ancillary heroes, there is little doubt that the most popular, especially in the hearts of the English, was he who is known as v~alwein, Gwalmachmai, Gauvain, or simply Gawain. In fact, there are more tales dealing with Gawain than with Arthur in English literature. As R.W. Ackerman points out, "in no fewer than seven of the 2 [English] romances is he [Gawain] indisputably the hero." Yet the importance of Gawain in the legends is not fully realized by those who read only Malory or the derivatives of his work. -
The Half-Life of First Crusade Epic in Romance Literature
How History Became Epic but Lost Its Identity on the Way: The Half-Life of First Crusade Epic in Romance Literature Carol Sweetenham University of Warwick This paper examines how the boundary between historic description and epic literature evolved during the lifetime of the Crusade Cycle. The price history paid for its assimilation into epic was a mutation into legend and fantasy until it became barely recognizable as history. This paper looks at three points in that mutation: contemporary to the Crusade; in the Antioche; and in later legendary depictions, including the Second Cycle of the fourteenth century and the Gerusalemme Liberata. A brief tour through historiographical usages in parallel with the chanson de geste form demonstrates the presence of contemporary historical concerns on a background of tradition. The only contemporary event judged worthy of being transmuted into a legend alongside Arthur, Charlemagne and the heroes of Antiquity and the Old Testament, it was transformed through narrative convention and contemporary concerns that divorced the story from history. Introduction The First Crusade was unique in the Middle Ages: it is the only post-1000 historical event to have spawned its own epic cycle. Chansons de geste generally have some kernel of historical truth, albeit distorted almost past recognition by literary convention and the passage of two or three centuries.1 The Old French Crusade Cycle (OFCC) and its descendants are alone in being based on events which were extensively chronicled and on the bounds of living memory; this is particularly true of the Chanson d’Antioche.2 As such they, and especially the Antioche, have been seen as a unique text which sprawls across the boundaries of history and literature, in Bender’s words “à la limite des chansons de geste” (Bender and Kleber, Les épopées romanes, pp. -

Chapel Hill 2020 Approved by: Ennio Rao Maggie Fritz-Morkin Reid Barbour Juan Carlos González-Espitia Federico Luisetti © 2020 Tessa Bullington Warren ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT Tessa Bullington Warren: Textual Healing: Gender, Genre, and Disease at the Sixteenth-Century Italian Court (Under the direction of Ennio Rao) This dissertation is an examination of the functions of literary and art patronage in healing the socio-political and physical wounds wrought by a combination of newly emergent contagious disease (syphilis) and widespread social disorder associated with the beginning of the sixteenth century in northern-Italian courts. I focus on the court of Federico II Gonzaga, first duke of Mantua, and a lesser- known chivalric epic poem written in his honor, Giovanbattista Dragoncino da Fano’s La Marfisa bizarra (1531), in order to assess the poet’s atypical treatment of gender and genealogy in mythologizing the origins of the Gonzaga dynasty according to generic standards for the Cinquencento epic. Dragoncino’s poem re-genders expected norms for the mythopoetic representation of patrilineal dynastic genealogies associated with the genre and presents sexually transgressive behavior by the founding member of the dynasty using language that encodes and masks its salacious content. I ground my view of the Bizarra as an intentional instance of textual healing (or healing through contact with text) in the specific court culture established by Federico II Gonzaga and his immediate predecessors (his parents Francesco II Gonzaga and Isabella d’Este), and in the contemporary use of art and literature to combat social and physical disorder. -

Reis Modern Language Review 106 (2011): 682–696 DOI: 10.5699/modelangrevi.106.3.0682 Abstract This article traces the development of medieval literary history across the thirteenth century through manuscript readings of Chrétien de Troyes’s romances. Redefining clergie as the clerkly pursuit of learning, the author argues that scribes played an important role in shaping Chrétien’s romances and establishing their place in medieval literary history. Through a close examination of manuscript collections centered on Cligés, the author delineates synchronic and diachronic shifts in the organization and presentation of Chrétien’s individual manuscripts, while evaluating the roles that different scribes and compilers played in the formation of a Chrétien corpus and the development of a romance genre. -
