Prof. Ayfer Karakaya-Stump_____________________ External Reader Budapest July 2020 CEU eTD Collection I, the undersigned, Ceren Çıkın Sungur, candidate for the MA degree in Late Antique, Medieval and Early Modern Studies, declare herewith that the present thesis is exclusively my own work, based on my research and only such external information as properly credited in notes and bibliography. I declare that no unidentified and illegitimate use was made of the work of others, and no part of the thesis infringes on any person’s or institution’s copyright. I also declare that no part of the thesis has been submitted in this form to any other institution of higher education for an academic degree. Budapest, July 2020 _____________________ _____ Signature CEU eTD Collection Abstract The purpose of this thesis is to develop a fresh approach to Saltıknâme, the hagiographic and heroic narrative on the life and deeds of a thirteenth century warrior-saint Sarı Saltık, by directly focusing on the portrayal of the protagonist in the text, and analyzing the main characteristics which made him a hero. Searching for the reasons behind this portrayal and examining the possible connections with sixteenth century Ottoman politics is another goal of this thesis since the first completed edition of the text is dated from 1591/2. Thus, I aim to reveal the sixteenth century layer of Saltıknâme which is accepted in the scholarship as originally a fifteenth century text, although it is a highly edited text including many anachronic elements and anecdotes, and its original version is lost. I argue that the manifestations of heroism which Sarı Saltık displayed in this text show that his portrayal, as well as the sixteenth century copy of Saltıknâme were reconstructions built in accordance to the Ottoman Sunnitization process conducted by the Ottoman state and ulama to serve the political needs of the Ottoman state in the sixteenth century. I also argue that Saltıknâme reflects the ongoing rivalries between the Ottomans, the Safavids, and the Habsburgs, and mirrors the apocalyptic atmosphere of the period with its anecdotes on shared prophecies across the Mediterranean, and millennial fears, and in response, includes soothing and encouraging messages to its audience against those concerns. Besides, in Saltıknâme Alid legacy is contested by the Hanafi-Sunni Ottoman ideology claiming that they are the “true” heirs of his heritage contrary to the Safavids. CEU eTD Collection i Acknowledgements First, I owe special debt to Dr. Sarah Nur Yıldız for having time for me and my questions, gently answering all of them, and encouraging me to carry out this thesis. I met Dr. Yıldız in a symposium at ANAMED in İstanbul, and although I was not her actual student, she was so kind to pay attention to me, and accepted me to her classes in Boğaziçi University and then, to be the external reader of my first draft. At that symposium, I also met with Ass. Prof. Marianne Sághy. She was the one who encouraged me to apply to the CEU. She was a beautiful soul, and I am sure my gratefulness will reach to her. I am thankful to Ass. Prof. Tijana Krstić, first for her studies for enlightening me in many ways and inspiring me to write this thesis, and secondly the interview she made with me. It was like a personal class I took from her. I also thank Dr. Günhan Börekçi for making me ask broader questions, and for taking pains with such a long thesis. I am deeply indebted to Ass. Prof. Ayfer Karakaya-Stump for accepting to be the external reader of my thesis and sparing her precious time to analyze it. I am also grateful to Johanna Tóth, Zsófia Göde and Zsuzsanna Reed for all their careful and gentle help, labor, and kindness they paid to the students. I am grateful to the CEU in general, and the Department of Medieval Studies for creating such a student-friendly academic environment and providing us satisfying classes. Besides this, I want to express my gratitude to UKID for publishing the Saltıknâme and Şefik Kantar who generously provided me its volumes. I am also grateful to Zeynep Aydoğan and Helga Anetshofer for kindly sharing me their research. CEU eTD Collection My special thanks to Can Sungur for being such a kind and supportive husband. Referring primarily to secondary sources, A History of Shi‘i Islam overviews key events going back to the time of Prophet Muhammad to “clarify misunderstandings” and illustrate the var- ious Shi‘i schools’ contribution to Islamic history. From an Ismaili Perspective could have been a helpful subtitle, as will be explained below. The book consists of six chapters: “Introduction: Progress in the Study of Shi‘i Islam,” “The Origins and Early History of Shi‘i Islam,” “The Ithna‘asharis or Twelvers,” “The Ismailis,” “The Zaydis,” and “The Nusayris or ‘Alawis,” ajiss31-3_ajiss 5/28/2014 1:24 PM Page 123 Book Reviews 123 respectively. Chapter 1 explores how medieval Sunni scholars influenced the per- ception of Islam as “a monolithic phenomenon with a well-defined doctri- nal basis from which different groups then deviated over time” (p. 4), how the Abbasids launched an anti-Ismaili campaign by fabricating evidence, how European travellers and Orientalists knew little about Shi‘i Islam until very late, and why Ismailism became the main object of attention during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.

The Role of Deobandi Ulema in Strengthening the Foundations of Indian Freedom Movement (1857-1924) The Role of Deobandi Ulema in Strengthening the Foundations of Indian Freedom Movement (1857-1924) * Turab-ul-Hassan Sargana **Khalil Ahmed ***Shahid Hassan Rizvi Abstract The main objective of the present study is to explain the role of the Deobandi faction of scholars in Indian Freedom Movement. In fact, there had been different schools of thought who supported the Movement and their works and achievements cannot be forgotten. Historically, Ulema played a key role in the politics of subcontinent and the contribution of Dar ul Uloom Deoband, Mazahir-ul- Uloom (Saharanpur), Madrassa Qasim-ul-Uloom( Muradabad), famous madaris of Deobandi faction is a settled fact. Their role became both effective and emphatic with the passage of time when they sided with the All India Muslim League. Their role and services in this historic episode is the focus of the study in hand. Keywords: Deoband, Aligarh Movement, Khilafat, Muslim League, Congress Ulama in Politics: Retrospect: Besides performing their religious obligations, the religious ulema also took part in the War of Freedom 1857, similar to the other Indians, and it was only due to their active participation that the movement became in line and determined. These ulema used the pen and sword to fight against the British and it is also a fact that ordinary causes of 1857 War were blazed by these ulema. Mian Muhammad Shafi writes: Who says that the fire lit by Sayyid Ahmad was extinguished or it had cooled down? These were the people who encouraged Muslims and the Hindus to fight against the British in 1857.

Imam Hussein derives his glory from of the Messenger of Allah Muhammad Peace be upon him. In fact, I do not find much trouble in a flow of ideas which follows one idea after the other about the wonderful example in steadfastness on the right. And I am thirsty for the moment when the article will be finished to start reading it again. When I started in my writing, I did not know much about the subject, but when I read the references and resources and studied the details of Imam's life, I was surprised with many meanings that added a lot to my personality. When we talk about this great person we must mention the environment in which he grew up and the family from which he descended. They are a family of the Prophet Muhammad (Ahl Albeit), , who are distinguished by good deeds, redemption and sacrifice, the reason for their preference was their commitment to the method of God and they paid precious cost to become the word of God is the highest. َ ََّ ُ ْ َ ْ ُ ْ َ ْ َ ُ َ ْ )1( )إن َما ُيريد ُالله لُيذه َب عنك ُم َّالر ْج َس أهل ال َبْيت َو ُيط َّه َرك ْم تطه ًيرا( ِ ِ ِ ِ ِ ِ ِ ِ The Holy Prophet Muhammad has recommended all Muslims to love (Ahl Albeit) and keep them in mind.

WOMEN PATRONS IN MEDIEVAL ANATOLIA AND A DISCUSSION OF MĀHBARĪ KHĀTŪN’S MOSQUE COMPLEX IN KAYSERI PATRICIA BLESSING* At the center of Kayseri, facing the well-preserved citadel stands a large architectural complex, consisting of a mosque, madrasa, mauso- leum, and the ruins of a double bathhouse [See figure 1]. The building, known locally as the Hunad Hatun or Huand Hatun Complex, was built in the second quarter of the thirteenth century. Inscriptions on both por- tals of the mosque date to 1237-38, while the other parts of the complex remain undated. At the time of construction, the patron of the complex, Māhbarī Khātūn, was the mother of the ruling Sultan Ghiyāth al-Dīn Kaykhusraw II (R 1237-46) and of the widows of the Sultan ‘Alā’ al-Dīn Kayqubād (R 1219-37).1 With her intervention in Kayseri and the con- struction of two caravanserais near Tokat and Yozgat, Māhbarī Khātūn is one of the most prolific female patrons in medieval Anatolia, and the one who is best documented inmonumental inscriptions, although not in much detail in other written sources of the period, such as chronicles and hagiographies. * Dr., Stanford Humanities Center, Stanford University, 424 Santa Teresa Street, Stan- ford, CA 94305, USA; [email protected]. 1 In modern Turkish, the name is more commonly spelled as Mahperi Hatun. Huand Hatun appears as a Turkish adaptation of the titles Khwand Khātūn. Another wife of the Sultan ‘Alā’ al-Dīn Kayqubād was Iṣmat al-Dunyā wa’l-Dīn al-Malika al-‘Ādila, a daughter of the Ayyubid ruler of Syria, al-Malik al-Ashraf Abū Bakr b.

They have shown that humans will always be interested in dimension of faith, belief, and religion, and established that there is a crucial relationship between the holistic signification and the social institution. At the same time, they have laid out the various reasons why the religion is important for people, such as the way it enables a form of social solidarity among people to add meanings to human life and uncertainty (suffering, death, secret, and illness). For all human progress, the embodiments of religion and faith and the process of discovery are related to collective cultural structuring, social representation, and cultural function.(1) The purpose of anthropology is to investigate people, social relations, and social structure, so faith is one of the most fascinating subjects for anthropologists. Atay mentions that religious anthropology explores religiosity, religious motives and practices that have been formed to represent the way of life and culture rather than their religious contents and sacred/divine sources.(2) Therefore anthropologists have researched the dialectic relationship This is a revised edition of the paper presented as “Ocak in the Globalizing Alevism: An Anthropological Analysis on Dedelik-Seyitlik,” at the 1st International Symposium of Alevism from Past to Present, Bingöl University,Turkey, October 3-5, 2013.

Advances in Social Science, Education and Humanities Research, volume 328 4th International Conference on Humanities Science and Society Development (ICHSSD 2019) A Study On the Theory of God's Science of Maturidi School Cunping Yun School of Foreign Language, Northwest Minzu University, Lanzhou, Gansu, China, 730050 [email protected] Keywords: Islamic theology, The science of God, Maturidi school Abstract: Maturidi school is one of the two pillars of Sunni sect in Islamic theology. In the heated debate on Islamic dogmatics, Maturidi school unswervingly protected the authority of the Book and the reason and became the one of the founders of the Sunni theology. Maturidi school successfully applied dialectical principles to ensure the supremacy of the Scriptures and at the same time upheld the role of the reason. They maintained a more rational and tolerant attitude toward many issues, and it is called "Moderatism"by the Sunni scholars. The thought of Maturidi school spread all over Central Asian countries, Afghanistan, India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Rome, Persian, Turkey, Egypt and China ,etc.. In today's globalized and diversified international situation, it is of great significance to enhance the study of Maturidi school's theological thought, especially it's theory of God's Science in order to promote ideological and cultural exchanges between our country and Muslim world and to enhance the mutual understanding. 1. Introduction Muslims began to argue about the fundamental principles of Islamic belief after the Prophet passed away. And some muslim scholars even touched upon the theological questions like the essence, attributes of Allah and the relationship between human and the universe in the influence of foreign cultures of Greece, Persia and Syria, and then "Ilm El-Kalam"(Islamic theology) came into being.

Turkish literature From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Turkish literature By category Epic tradition Orhon Dede Korkut Köroğlu Folk tradition Folk literature Folklore Ottoman era Poetry Prose Republican era Poetry Prose V T E A page from the Dîvân-ı Fuzûlî, the collected poems of the 16th-century Azerbaijanipoet Fuzûlî. Turkish literature (Turkish: Türk edebiyatı or Türk yazını) comprises both oral compositions and written texts in the Turkish language, either in its Ottoman form or in less exclusively literary forms, such as that spoken in the Republic of Turkey today. The Ottoman Turkish language, which forms the basis of much of the written corpus, was influenced by Persian and Arabic and used the Ottoman Turkish alphabet. The history of the broader Turkic literature spans a period of nearly 1,300 years. The oldest extant records of written Turkic are the Orhon inscriptions, found in the Orhon River valley in central Mongolia and dating to the 7th century. Subsequent to this period, between the 9th and 11th centuries, there arose among the nomadic Turkic peoples of Central Asia a tradition of oral epics, such as the Book of Dede Korkut of the Oghuz Turks—the linguistic and cultural ancestors of the modern Turkish people—and the Manas epic of the Kyrgyz people. Beginning with the victory of the Seljuks at the Battle of Manzikert in the late 11th century, the Oghuz Turks began to settle in Anatolia, and in addition to the earlier oral traditions there arose a written literary tradition issuing largely—in terms of themes, genres, and styles— from Arabic and Persian literature.

The Seljuks of Anatolia: An Epigraphic Study Abstract This is a study of the monumental epigraphy of the Anatolian Seljuk Sultanate, also known as the Sultanate of Rum, which emerged in Anatolia following the Great Seljuk victory in Manzikert against the Byzantine Empire in the year 1071.It was heavily weakened in the Battle of Köse Dağ in 1243 against the Mongols but lasted until the end of the thirteenth century. The history of this sultanate which survived many wars, the Crusades and the Mongol invasion is analyzed through their epigraphy with regard to the influence of political and cultural shifts. The identity of the sultanate and its sultans is examined with the use of their titles in their monumental inscriptions with an emphasis on the use of the language and vocabulary, and with the purpose of assessing their strength during different periods of their realm.
