We are delighted that you and your child will be joining the Cantell community in September as part of our new Year 7 intake – the Class of 2024.

We understand that the transition to a new school can be difficult for both students and parents, so we have an excellent programme in place to support you and your child to make this as smooth as possible.

Transition Week is a key event for all new students. This booklet contains the information that you need to know to support your child at this important time.

Please feel free to contact our Transition Team at any time during the school day, either in person, by phoning 02380 323111, or by e-mailing [email protected].

There will be An opportunity to come and ask questions at the end of each day during Transition Week, or after the Graduation Ceremony on Friday 5th July. TransitionFrequently askedWeek questions Aims

Cantell students come from a range of primary schools. Transition Week is designed for all students to get to know their new classmates and feel confident in their new environment.

Students will take part in a selection of lessons to enable them to familiarise themselves with daily life at Cantell.

As can feel daunting to some students, we also aim to ensure that all students understand the Cantell community, and our way of working. In particular, the Class of 2024 will be introduced to our Cantell Cs, the values which underpin everything we do. EssentialFrequently In- askedformation questions

These items can be purchased from the school stationery shop, however parents may prefer to purchase them from a high street stationery shop or supermarket.

With over 900 students on site it is difficult to reunite lost items with their owners, unless they are clearly named, but any unmarked lost property is kept for a reasonable period by the Student Services Team.

The school has lockers available for student use. Students are required to make a payment of £10.00 to lease a locker for the duration of their time at Cantell. This includes a £5 refundable deposit which will be given back once the locker key is returned. FrequentlyCantell askedUniform questions

Students will study PE, Art, Drama, Music, Citizenship and Technology in mixed ability groups. If you would like to find out more about the learning in each curriculum area, please see the curriculum area on the Cantell School website. Frequently Homework asked questions

Homework is an essential part of consolidating learning, and enabling students to develop independence and responsibility. Students will be expected to read for 20 minutes each evening. Additionally, they will receive homework from each subject area once a week. All homework is set via the online homework platform Show My Homework. Students will be given individual logins to access their homework. Parents will also receive separate logins so that they can support and monitor their child’s homework. Students will also receive a paper planner to help with their organisation.

Frequently Literacy asked questions

High levels of literacy (reading, writing, speaking and listening) are vital for success - not only at school, but throughout life. Students at Cantell take part in a number of great activities to ensure that they develop excellent levels of literacy in all areas. Reading is a key focus - all students are expected to have a reading book with them at all times, and the school has a well stocked library, with fiction and non-fiction books for all abilities and interests. Year 7 students take part in a programme called Accelerated Reader, where they complete quizzes on books that they have read, and are set individual targets to achieve. All Year 7 students are expected to read for at least 20 minutes each day at home. Writing is developed across the curriculum. Students are encouraged to participate in local and national writing competitions, and write for a wide range of purposes. For students who find reading and writing more difficult, the school provides a range of literacy interventions focussing on the skills required to develop students’ skills and understanding. Key Stage 3 participate in DEAR (Drop Everything And Read) sessions 3 times a week. TheFrequently House askedSystem questions

All students and staff at Cantell are members of one of the four school Houses: Chapel, Itchen, Kingsland and Northam (named after the four stands at the St Mary’s football stadium). These Houses are organised into Tutor groups for each year group. Each House meets fortnightly for an assembly, organised by their House Leader. Students take part in challenges, sports and competitions to earn points for their House, and compete to win the House Cup each year. The Houses have their own logos, banners and colours.

GettingFrequently to askedCantell questions

The school runs a limited bus service from the town centre to the school. This is a popular service, and tickets must be purchased in advance. Passes can be bought on a weekly or monthly basis from school reception or via the school website. All users of the school bus must sign a code of conduct, and on the rare occasion that a student fails to meet these expectations, they will be asked to find alternative transport. The school bus route includes stops as below:

Bus Stop AM PM Northam, Princes Street 07:49 15:28 City Centre (Poundtree Road) 07:55 15:21 Kingsland Market 07:57 15:22 Brintons Road 08:00 15:17 RSH Hospital 08:02 15:15 Aldi 08:04 15:13 Junction 08:11 15:09 Cantell School 08:20 15:00

Students who wish to attend extra-curricular clubs and who use the school bus service can use the existing Bluestar network to get the bus home with a free extra-curricular pass which can be collected from Student Services. GettingFrequently to askedCantell questions

If you would like to ride your bike to school we provide a large area for the secure storage of bicycles. All students cycling to school need to bring their own lock, and we advise all cyclists to wear a helmet and have their bike fitted with suitable lights. Bike locks and lights are avail- able to purchase from the school, from main reception. Violet Road becomes very busy at the beginning and end of the school day, so we suggest that parents drop students slightly further away from the school in order to ease congestion. Please do not use the turning cir- cle at the front of the school to park in, as access to this area is needed at all times by the school bus and the emergency services. Frequently School Meals asked questions

Cantell school operates a cashless catering system, so students do not need to carry money with them. Each student has an account, where parents can top up money online using our payment portal Wisepay or the Wisepay App. Further details along with a user guide will be sent to you before transition week.

Students access their account using a digital numerical string, represent- ing their fingertip, or using a PIN number. The digital information is stored using the highest standard security software, and has proven very successful since its introduction.

When accessing the online payment system, parents can see what has been purchased, as well as adding additional funds to an account.

At present the daily spend is set at £5.50; if you wish to reduce this amount please contact a member of the Student Services team.

In September, this system can also be used to pay for school bus passes, school trips and lockers. Frequently School Meals asked questions
