John Oldham has posted an impressive 66·15 record and has guided the Hilltoppers to a post-season tourna­ ment berth every season . Oldham. who coached nine seasons at Tennessee Tech. has an enviable 12-year coaching record of 184·98. Now in hi s 13th season as a collegiate coach, Oldham is recogni zed as onc of the nation's top basketball strategists. Oldham graduated (rom Western in 1949 after a spectacular athletic career. before playing profes­ sional basketball. and coaching on the high school STAY TUNED TO level before reaching the collegiate level. All rights reserved. Biographical History: Clem Haskins was born and raised on a tobacco farm near Campbellsville, Kentucky where he was one of 11 children. Along with many other firsts, he was Western Kentucky's first black basketball player in 1963. In 1967 Haskins was drafted to play for the Chicago Bulls. He played professional ball for nine years, three with the Bulls, four with the Phoenix Suns and two with the Washington Bullets retiring in 1976. Clem Haskins returned to Western in 1977 as an assistant basketball coach, becoming head coach in 1980, a position he held until 1986 when he moved to University of Minnesota.

Early games were held in the Red Barn when it was not in service as a girls' dormitory. By 1921, the program was well established and has not missed a season since. GREENBERG* INTRODUCTION College coaches are some of the highest of profile employees at any college or university. In many instances the pay that they receive outdis- tances the pay of the university's chancellor or most esteemed professor. Their athletic accomplishments receive more notoriety and media atten- tion than the most celebrated lab discovery of the university's science department. For many coaches the job can be characterized as "24-7" due to the exponential growth in their responsibilities beyond con- ducting practices, teaching and coaching. And what a job - every coaching moment is surrounded by stress, and every decision, whether on or off the court, is subject to second-guessing and scrutiny and is the subject of an often vicious public debate. Moreover, a coach's job secur- ity is often conditioned on winning because wins are the equivalent of the bottom line, putting fans in the stands, bolstering alumni contribu- tions, warranting lucrative TV and cable contracts, and persuading re- cruits to accept scholarship offers.
