DR. ADRON DORAN, PRESIDENT MOREHEAD STATE UNIVERSITY Dr. Doran is Morehead State University's seventh President and has served Morehead since 1954.

Morehead State University A change in its name this year points out the high level reached in the growth of Morehead State University. Reflected by the change are 12 years of increase in academic standards, enroll ment and physical plant under the leadership of President Adron Doran. What was once a dormant little college is now a bustling institution of higher learning which has grown in enrollment more than six times during the past 12 years, making More head State University one of the fastest growing schools in the United States. With its student body of nearly 5,500, its strong faculty and its dynamic leadership, More head State University has become one of the nation's foremost educational institutions. The most eye-catching feature of the school is the $14,000,000 construction program under way on the 365-acre campus composed of gently sloping and terraced lawns in a setting of un surpassed natural beauty located midway be tween Ashland and Lexington in a spot "where the Bluegrass meets Appalachia." Now under construction are: Mignon Tower, a 16-story women's residence; Alumni Tower, a 10-story men's residence; an addition to Breck inridge Training School; a physical education ad dition to the Fieldhouse; a 41-unit married stu dent apartment building; 11 three-bedroom fac- 2 ulty houses; and a four-story addition to Lappin Science Hall. To be started later this year are: a Gradu .ate Education Studies Building; another addition to Baird Music Hall; an addition to the Doran Student House and a three-story Art Building. Completed within the past year were five story East Mignon Hall; four-story Cooper Hall; the maintenance and operations building; an ad dition to the Administration Building; and instal lation of lights at Breathitt Sports Sta dium. Built during the last 12 years have been the fieldhouse; the Doran Student House which houses the cafeteria, grill, bookstore, game room, lounges, post office and meeting rooms; Lake wood Terrace, a 116-unit married housing pro ject; the 201-room North Men's Hall. Other new buildings include: the Butler Hall; 12 faculty duplexes; a dramatic arts laboratory; addition to Button Auditorium; Bert T. Combs Classroom Building; the Home Economics and In dustrial Arts Building; the Administration Build ing; Mignon Hall; Wilson Hall; an addition doub ling the size of Baird Music Hall; West Mignon Hall; and Regents Hall; and addition to Johnson Camden Library and renovation of Palmer House for use as a home management house. The growth program has provided proper ac commodations for Morehead's expanding inter collegiate program. For indoor events, the Field house seats 5,000 and contains offices for the coaches. Outldoor contests are held at Breathitt Sports Center which boasts a 10,000-seat sta dium with a $45,000 grasstex running track and a baseball field built to major league proportions. Individual photos left to right in order of biographies. 5 Bob Wright - Head Coach Bob Wright is beginning his second season at the helm of the Morehead State University basketball program and has earned the reputa- tion as "one of the f finest coaches in the · Ohio Valley Confer ence" after only one year in OVC. His 1965 squad, a pre-season pick to fin ish near the cellar, posted a 12-12 season ledger and a 8-6 con ference record, good for a third place tie. Wright received num erous votes as coach of the year and ranked second in the balloting. As a first year coach, the popular Wright faced many disadvantages. 'Ile did not know his personnel and they did not know his system. Many anxious moments were spent in practice while Wright and his dedicated staff stressed the importance of team play, hustle, desire, and a winning system. Injuries also played an important role in the early goings as three front-line performers re ceived serious injuries. But Wright did not flinch with the misfortunes, he devised a new offense and was ready to face OVC competition successfully when the occasion arose. Wright is a strong fundamentalist in his bas ketball teaching, and has used the theory that good fundamentals and good conditioning equal winning basketball teams. His teams play, run and shoot basketball and employ a tight man for-man defense. Prior to stepping into collegiate coaching at Morehead, Wright coached in the high school ranks for 13 years and compiled a record of 329 wins against 72 losses. He spent his last six years on the high school level at Ashland Paul Blazer High School and led the Tomcats to 168 wins and only 29 defeats. While at Ashland, he was named Kentucky "Coach of the Year" with his team winning the state championship in 1961. He coached at Vance burg High School before moving to Ashland. Wright is a 1950 graduate of Marshall Uni versity and received the AB degree with a major in physical education and a minor in biological sciences. He attended Morehead from 1957 to 1961 and earned the MA degree in education. During his collegiate days, he was basketball captain his senior year and voted the outstanding athlete at Marshall. He led Marshall in scoring his junior and senior years with 18.3 and 19.5 6 averages, scoring 373 and 369 points in the re spective years, and played on an N. A. I. B. Na tional Championship team in 1947-48. The Pike County native is a 1944 graduate of Elkhorn City High School and led hjs team to the state tournament in his junior and senior years. As a senior, he was captafo of the team and was selected on the All-State third team. He served in the Navy from 1944 to 1946 and saw duty in both the Atlantic and Pacilic thea tres of war. Hjs service basketball team had a record of 100 wins and 10 losses during hls span of duty. Huntjng and fishlng are two of Wright's favorite hobbies and he is also an avid, par golf er. He is a member of the Baptist church. Wright is married to the former Helen Louise Anderson, a classmate at Marshall. The Wrights have two children, a daughter, Sarabert (11) and a son Robert Gordon, Jr. ( 4). A nephew, Charles Henry Wilson II, also lives with the family.

Lake Kelly - Assistant Coach Lake Kelly fills the vital assistant coach pos ition on Wright's staff. Wright persuaded Kelly to return to Morehead State Uni- versity last year after a long as sociation with Eagle basketball. He has coached and played on the high school, army and col lege level and has gained a rep utation as "one of the complete students of the game". Kelly began bis coaching ca reer at Morehead's Breckinridge Training School while completing additional work for a major in physical education. After fulfilling the requirements, be took over the bas ketball reins at Amelia, Ohio, and led his team to a 13-5 record. The inactive captain in the army reserve was called to active duty during the Berlin Crisis and assigned to Fort Chaffee, . He assumed the post basketball duties and saw bis team fin ish second in the Fourth U. S. Army Tournament and compile a 25-4 record. Following bis army bitch, Kelly returned to Morehead to work on his MA degree and was the Eagles' freshman coach. He held similiar duties at Florida State in 1963 and was named assistant coach at Loyola University in 1964. A Flemingsburg native, Kelly attended Fleming County High School for two years before entering Columbia Military Academy. He earned All-Southern and All-Mid-South honors, led the team in scoring with a 25 point average and was the team captain. Kelly received the BS degree from Georgia Tech in 1956 and the MA degree from Morehead 7 in 1961. He earned four basketball letters at Tech, one of the last SEC players to earn four, and was a starter two years at guard. Hunting and fishing arP. favorite top:cs of the popular assistant and he also swings a "mean" three-wood. He was golf coach last Spring. Kelly is marr:ed to the former Martha Ran dall, a retired airline stewardess, and has two sons, Lake 8 and Brian 3. John E. (Sonny) Allen - Freshman Coach John "Sonny" Allen, one of the greatest prep players in Kentucky basketball history, is in charge of the Morehead State University freshman fortunes. The popular Morehead na- - tive received one of the state's most prized honors in 1966 as he was inducted into the Ken tucky High School Hall of Fa!I\e. He attended Morehead's Breckinridge Training School as a prepster and led his team to the statP. tonrnament twice, winning the champ ionship in 1946. He was named to the AU-State team and was the most valuable player in the Kentucky-Indiana High School All-Star Classic. All-America and All-KIAC honors awaited Allen at Morehead. He was All-KIAC in 1947-50 and received All-America honors in 1949-50. His 1923 points rank second in all-time scor·ng at Morehead and his 20.8 average per game is fourth in the record books. Allen received the AB from Morehead in 1950 and was granted an MA degree in 1955. He coached at Breckinridge High School 10 years and led his charges to the state tournament in 1963. In two seasons as the Eagle freshman boss, his teams have compiled a 14-7 record. He served as baseball coach last year with the Eagles earning a share of the OVC Eastern Division championship and will coach the golf team this Spring. The versatile athlete has been associated with professional baseball and basket ball and is an accomplished golfer with many tournament trophies to his credit. Allen is married to a former Morehead class mate, Merl Fair, and has three daughters, Janie 14, Susan 12, Patty 9 and one son, Dwayne 5. M. S. U. HardVirood Preview Morehead State University basketball coach Bob Wright is all smiles when he thinks about the potential of the 1966-67 Eagles. With the re turn of four starters and the best freshman team in the school's history, he bas reason to be happy.

Q u Approaching his second season as a collegi ate coach, Wright will greet a squad of 17 play ers, seven seniors, two juniors and five sopho mores. The 1965 squad finished in a tie for third place in the Ohio Valley Conference with eight wins and six losses, and a 12-12 season mark. The four returning starters are 6-5 senior center Bruce King (11.3), 6-6 junior forward Charles Adams (15.8), 6-5 junior forward Larry Jordan (10.5) and 6-0 senior guard Jim Sandfoss ( 15.9). King and Adams were honorable mention selections on the All-OVC team, but all of these veterans will have a difficult task returning to their respective positions in 1966 with a talented group of sophomores in the Eagle camp. Leading the group of sophomores are two 6-7 jumping jacks, Willie Jackson (21.6) and La mar Green (17.3). Both have outstanding ability and are considered "blue chip" by everyone who has seen them play. Challenging out front from the sophomore ranks will be 6-2 Jerry Conley (14.4), 6-0 Danny Cornett (14.8) and 5-11 Randy Williams (13.7 ). Conley is a do-it-all man with speed, outstand ing jumping ability and a fine shot from the cor ners as well as the front court. Cornett is one of the deadliest shots in the game out front and has increased his speed to be a definite starting threat. Williams, the speedy defensive demon of the trio, is a fine jump shooter and possesses the hustle to be a strong starting contender. Wright also returns adequate bench strength with 6-7 senior Sam Hall, 6-6 senior Don DeClerq, 6-4 senior David Turner and 5-11 junior Mike Tarry. Hall, a starter much of his sophomore season, is an outside threat to break in the start ing lineup if he can overcome an injury which limited his action as a junior. The Eagles will be quicker offensively and defensively and should be able to utilize Wright's run-and-shoot offensive theory. Additional height will give the Eagles a better board game and the improved squad speed should be a definite asset defensively. "Overall, we should be much improved over last season," said Wright. "We have an outstand ing group of sophomores and four returning starters to build the nucleus for a winning team. The boys are familiar with my system this year and know what I expect from them. They are willing to put out 110% and I am confident they will receive their rewards in winning. I know our sophomores will make a lot of mistakes but I am very optimistic about the challenges we face. These boys have a burning desire to win," added Wright. Great size, good speed, fine shooting and an abundance of talented young performers indicate a bright future for Morehead State University and coach Bob Wright. 9 10 - Randy Williams 5-10, 165, Soph., FN, Guard, Ashland, Ky.
