ADRON DORAN, PRESIDENT MOREHEAD STATE UNIVERSITY Dr. Doran is Morehead State University's seventh President and has served Morehead since 1954. Morehead State University A change in its name this year points out the high level reached in the growth of Morehead State University. Reflected by the change are 12 years of increase in academic standards, enroll ment and physical plant under the leadership of President Adron Doran. What was once a dormant little college is now a bustling institution of higher learning which has grown in enrollment more than six times during the past 12 years, making More head State University one of the fastest growing schools in the United States. With its student body of nearly 5,500, its strong faculty and its dynamic leadership, More head State University has become one of the nation's foremost educational institutions. The most eye-catching feature of the school is the $14,000,000 construction program under way on the 365-acre campus composed of gently sloping and terraced lawns in a setting of un surpassed natural beauty located midway be tween Ashland and Lexington in a spot "where the Bluegrass meets Appalachia." Now under construction are: Mignon Tower, a 16-story women's residence; Alumni Tower, a 10-story men's residence; an addition to Breck inridge Training School; a physical education ad dition to the Fieldhouse; a 41-unit married stu dent apartment building; 11 three-bedroom fac- 2 ulty houses; and a four-story addition to Lappin Science Hall. To be started later this year are: a Gradu .ate Education Studies Building; another addition to Baird Music Hall; an addition to the Doran Student House and a three-story Art Building. Completed within the past year were five story East Mignon Hall; four-story Cooper Hall; the maintenance and operations building; an ad dition to the Administration Building; and instal lation of lights at Breathitt Sports Center Sta dium. Built during the last 12 years have been the fieldhouse; the Doran Student House which houses the cafeteria, grill, bookstore, game room, lounges, post office and meeting rooms; Lake wood Terrace, a 116-unit married housing pro ject; the 201-room North Men's Hall. Other new buildings include: the Butler Hall; 12 faculty duplexes; a dramatic arts laboratory; addition to Button Auditorium; Bert T. Combs Classroom Building; the Home Economics and In dustrial Arts Building; the Administration Build ing; Mignon Hall; Wilson Hall; an addition doub ling the size of Baird Music Hall; West Mignon Hall; and Regents Hall; and addition to Johnson Camden Library and renovation of Palmer House for use as a home management house. The growth program has provided proper ac commodations for Morehead's expanding inter collegiate program. For indoor events, the Field house seats 5,000 and contains offices for the coaches. Outldoor contests are held at Breathitt Sports Center which boasts a 10,000-seat sta dium with a $45,000 grasstex running track and a baseball field built to major league proportions. Individual photos left to right in order of biographies. 5 Bob Wright - Head Coach Bob Wright is beginning his second season at the helm of the Morehead State University basketball program and has earned the reputa- tion as "one of the f finest coaches in the · Ohio Valley Confer ence" after only one year in OVC. His 1965 squad, a pre-season pick to fin ish near the cellar, posted a 12-12 season ledger and a 8-6 con ference record, good for a third place tie. Wright received num erous votes as coach of the year and ranked second in the balloting. As a first year coach, the popular Wright faced many disadvantages. 'Ile did not know his personnel and they did not know his system. Many anxious moments were spent in practice while Wright and his dedicated staff stressed the importance of team play, hustle, desire, and a winning system. Injuries also played an important role in the early goings as three front-line performers re ceived serious injuries. But Wright did not flinch with the misfortunes, he devised a new offense and was ready to face OVC competition successfully when the occasion arose. Wright is a strong fundamentalist in his bas ketball teaching, and has used the theory that good fundamentals and good conditioning equal winning basketball teams. His teams play, run and shoot basketball and employ a tight man for-man defense. Prior to stepping into collegiate coaching at Morehead, Wright coached in the high school ranks for 13 years and compiled a record of 329 wins against 72 losses. He spent his last six years on the high school level at Ashland Paul Blazer High School and led the Tomcats to 168 wins and only 29 defeats. While at Ashland, he was named Kentucky "Coach of the Year" with his team winning the state championship in 1961. He coached at Vance burg High School before moving to Ashland. Wright is a 1950 graduate of Marshall Uni versity and received the AB degree with a major in physical education

GREENBERG* INTRODUCTION College coaches are some of the highest of profile employees at any college or university. In many instances the pay that they receive outdis- tances the pay of the university's chancellor or most esteemed professor. Their athletic accomplishments receive more notoriety and media atten- tion than the most celebrated lab discovery of the university's science department. For many coaches the job can be characterized as "24-7" due to the exponential growth in their responsibilities beyond con- ducting practices, teaching and coaching. And what a job - every coaching moment is surrounded by stress, and every decision, whether on or off the court, is subject to second-guessing and scrutiny and is the subject of an often vicious public debate. Moreover, a coach's job secur- ity is often conditioned on winning because wins are the equivalent of the bottom line, putting fans in the stands, bolstering alumni contribu- tions, warranting lucrative TV and cable contracts, and persuading re- cruits to accept scholarship offers.
