John Oldham is a man who has excelled at nearly every phase of basketball competition and one who is now ma king a The 1975·76 season will be Jim Richard's fifth as head coach of the Hililoppers. He succeeded current We stern Athlet iC Director John Oldham in 1971 alter three yea rs as an assistant coach. He immediately, in the 1971-72 season. led Western to a considerable name for nimself as athletic administrater. An All -Amer ican at Western Ken tucky under the late E. A. Diddle, tie for the Ohio Valley Conference title and a 15- 11 record. Oldham has also performed successfully as a professional player and as a head coach at both the high school and college levels. He and Oldham share a distinction held by no other coach In the history of the ove. since they are the only coaches to Win a Oldham Succeeded Diddle as head coach of the Hilltoppers in 1964. His seven year record with the Hilitoppers before share of the league title in their first years as head coaches. Oldham won hiS Ilrst OVC crown at Tennessee Tech in 1955-56. giving up coaching to become athletic director in July, 1971. wa s phenomenal. He was inducled to into the Kentucky High School Basketball Hall of Fame in the spring of 1974. Dexter Reed, who missed much of last season with a knee injury, will team up with Cook at the guard slot. The 6-4 Reed and the 6-5 Cook will be backed by a 5-10 play -making artist, Al vin Wright. Wright led the team in assists last year with 128 and set a single-game school record of 13 in one game.

In trying to cope with Memph is State's si ze and depth last year in Memph is, the Hilltoppers played one 01 their most deliberate games of the season before finally losing a 79-72 decision, It will be interesting to see what kind of tactics Richards and his staff throw at the Tigers this time around.

The Western-Memphis State Series has been an interesting one that started in the 1933·34 season.

Hilltopper basketball . a golden era of Western Ken tucky University·s proud heritage . has been a succe ss story right from its In 1964 . at the re tirement of Diddte. Joh n Otdham took command of the Hit ltoppers . Otdham . an All-American beginning ba ck in 1914 . when Western's cagers put together a 5-1 under Diddle in 1949, guided Western to its ninth appearance in the NIT. re cord. In 1922. Ed Diddle. the man wh o would become a legend in his Before becoming full-time athletic di re ctor in 1971. In his seven ye ars as head coach , he ted the Hilttoppers fa four 20·win seasons . In the 1970-71 seaso n. game . Diddle's men opened the season with the most lop-sided Otdham 's Hilttoppers gained fame by ptacing second in the ECAC Holiday Festival , losing by two points to a con te st in the school's history. a 103- 7 victory. They later won the NCAA Mid·East Regiona l Tou rnament by defeating Jacksonvi lle. a coach who would later become one of the win ni ngest coaches in the Kentucky and Oh io State . In seve n season's under Oldham , We stern won 146 games and lost only 41. a winning percentage of .781. He betler known as "Didd le-is ms" . wa s named the OVC's "Coach of the Year" four times , in 1962-63 , 1965-66 . 1969-70 and 1970·71.
