Head Coach - Bob Wright

Bob Wright will begin his first stint in the collegiate coaching ranks this season at Morehead State College following a very successful high school coaching career. Wright succeeds Bob Laughlin, who is devoting full time to the athletic director's post after guiding the Eagles for the past 12 seasons. In 13 years of high school coaching, Wright compiled a record of 329 wins against 72 losses. He spent the last six years at Ashland High School where he rolled to 168 wins and only 29 defeats. While at Ash land he was named Kentucky "Co~ch of the Year" with his team winning the state championship in 1961. Wright is a 1950 graduate of Marshall College and received the AB degree with a major in physical education and a minor in biological sciences. He attended Morehead from 1957 to 1961 and earned the MA degree in education. Wright is a strong fundamentalist in his basketball teaching, and has used the theory that good fundamentals and good conditioning equal winning basketball teams. Wright teams play run and shoot basketball and employ a tight man-for man defense. During Wright's collegiate days, he was cap tain his senior year and voted the outstanding athlete at Marshall. He led Marshall in scoring his junior year with an 18.3 average and averaged 19.5 points per game as a senior. Wright is a 1944 graduate of Elkhorn City High School and led his team to the state tourna ment in his junior and senior years. As a senior, he was captain of the team and was selected on the All-State third team. Wright served in the Navy from 1944 to 1946 and saw duty in both the Atlantic and Pacific theatres of war. His service basketball team had a record of 100 wins and 10 losses during his span of duty. Wright is an avid fisherman, hunter, golfer and enjoys anything involving basketball. He is a member of the Baptist church. Wright is married to the former Helen Louise Anderson, a classmate at Marshall The Wrights have two children, a daughter Sarabert (10) and a son Robert Gordon, Jr. (3). A nephew, Charles Henry Wilson II, also lives with the Wrights. Lake Kelly - Assistant Coach Returning to Morehead State College as assistant basketball coach is Lake Kelly. Lake served as the freshman basketball coach at More head in 1962. He compiled a 110-6 record as freshman coach at F1orida State University in 1963, and moved to Loyola University in 1964 as assistant coach. Kelly is a native of F1em ingsburg and did his collegiate playing at Georgia Tech. He graduated from Tech in 1956 with a BS degree and received an MA degree from Morehead in 1961. Kelly will handle most of the scouting for the Eagles this season. In addition to his scouting duties, he will do much of the Morehead recruit ing. He has a vast knowledge of the game and combined with his friendly personality should be one of the top recruiters in the conference. Kelly is also golf coach. He is married to the former Martha Randall and has two sons, Lake 7 and Brian 2.

John E. "Sonny" Allen Fre;shman Coach The man in charge of the freshman basketball fortunes at Morehead State College is "Sonny" Allen, a former Eagle star. Allen, who served as basket ball coach at Breckinridge Train ing School for the past 11 years, is one of Morehead's all-time scoring greats. An All-KIAC choice while playing for the Eagles from 1947 to 1950, he led Breckinridge Training School to the state tournament on two occasions with Breckinridge winning the state championship in 1946. In his first season as freshman coach last year, Allen guided the Eagles to a 7-4 record. In addition to his basketball duties, Allen coaches the Eagle baseball team. He is married to a former Morehead class mate, Merl Fair, and has three daughters, Janie 13, Susan 11, Patty 8, and one son, Dwayne 4. General Information

The 1965-66 Morehead Eagles should be one of the most interesting teams Morehead has had in recent years. With the presence of their new head coach Bob Wright and his assistant, Lake Kelly, the Eagles will be hoping to improve on their 13-10 record last season. The Eagles finished fifth in the Ohio Valley Conference last year with a 6-8 record. Although the Eagles return eight lettermen, inexperience will be a key factor affecting the success of this year's squad. Only half of these lettermen have received enough game experience to be counted on by Wright as an experienced player. Wright spent much of the pre-season practices working strictly on fundamentals. The Eagles have only two seniors on the squad and Wright is striving to make his young club fundamentally sound. The Eagles have good over-all speed and plan to play run-and-shoot offensively. Wright will employ a tight man-to-man defense and hopes the over-all speed will be an asset to the Eagles de fensively. The Eagles have several men who can hit from outside, but do not have a consistant scoring threat with the loss of two stars from last year. All-OVC guard , whom Wright tutored in high school, graduated in June and All OVC center Henry Akin did not return to More head this semester. Finding replacements for these two veterans will be a big problem for Wright and the Eagles could improve on their 13-10 1964-65 record if these replacements are found. Rounding out their final season for Morehead are 5-11 guard Tommy Castle and 6-7 forward Bob Kohler. Castle started in many of the Morehead games last year and will be a top contender for a starting guard berth. He averaged 9.6 points per game for the Eagles last year. Kohler will be making a bid for a starting forward position. He was a mainstay under the boards for the Eagles last year and averaged 7.5 points per game. Junior Bruce King is the prime center candi date for the Eagles. Bruce entered Morehead in the second semester of his freshman year and became eligible for varsity competition last year at the beginning of the second semester of last year. Bruce averaged 12 points and 12.7 rebounds in 11 games. Expected to grab the other forward position is junior Sam Hall. Sam was a starter for the Eagles last year and averaged 7.2 points and 6.5 rebounds per game. He is a great hustler and will give the Eagles strength under the boards. Fighting for the other guard position will be juniors Jim Sandfoss and Howard Smith. Sand foss and Smith both saw action in 19 games last year and both possess good outside shots. Sand foss averaged 5.1 points per game and Smith had a 5.6 points per game average. Others who will be pushing for starting berths are: 6-4 David Turner, 6-6 Don DeClerq, 6-6 Charles Adams, 5-10 Wayne Martin, 6-5 Lar ry Jordan and 5-10 Mike Tarry. Morehead will play a rugged Ohio Valley Conference schedule plus games with highly re garded Kentucky Wesleyan, Canisius, Kentucky State, Idaho State, Utah State, University of Utah and Marshall University.

Tom Castle, Guard

This 5-11 Virgie High School product will be rounding out his career with the Eagles this sea son. Tom saw limited action as a sophomore, but became a scoring threat near the end of his junior season. Castle appeared in 22 games last season and posted a 9.6 scor ing average. In his sophomore year, he averaged 4.2 points a game. He is an outstanding defen sive player, possesses good speed and the Morehead coaching staff is counting on him for front line duty . . Tom is an English and geography major and was an All-Stater at Virgie High School.

Sam Hall, Forward-Center

One of the outstanding leaders on the Eagle squad is Sam Hall, a 6-7 forward-center from Coal Grove, Ohio. Sam is a fine outside shot and has improved bis ing and d efensive strength. He is expected to be one of the best defensive players on the squad. Sam should be a big asset to the Eagle run-and-shoot style of ball with his speed and ability to handle the ball. As a sophomore, Sam averaged 7.2 points and 6.5 rebounds per game. Sam is one of the finest students on the squad and is majoring in industrial engineering.

He needs ex perience on defense but is im proving with every practice ses sion. As a sophomore, Smith aver aged 5.6 points in 19 games. Charles Adams, Forward A newcomer to the Eagle squad is this 6-6 junior college transfer from Lees Junior College. He has impressed the coaches with his shooting and rebounding ability. Charles has a good shot and can hit the basket with con sistency from any place on the floor. He also does a fine job re bounding but is lacking in the defensive aspect of the game. Charles will be counted on by . . Wright to give the Eagles a big- man scoring threat and will see a ·1ot of action this season. Adams is majoring in physical education. Don DeClerq, Forward Probably the most improved player on the Eagle squad is this 6-5 junior from Detroit, Mich igan. Don has always been a hard knocking rebounder and this year he has developed a shot which should make him a real scoring threat. Don has good speed and strength and is im proving his defensive play. A hard worker and hustler, h Don should give the Eagles good bench strength. With the improvement Don is making, he may be in contention for a starting berth as the season progresses. Don is a pre-engineering major. Varsity Summary: G FGA FGM Pct. FI'A FI'M Pct. Wayne is one of the finest defensive men on the squad and gives the opponents fits with his burning desire to win. Wayne is majoring in business. David Turner, Forward A rapidly improving member of the Eagle squad is this former All-State product from McDowell, Kentucky. David was one of the most sought after prospects in the state as a senior and received many honors during his school boy days. Turner is one of the finest shots on the Eagle squad and is a very effective weapon against zone defenses. The coaching staff has been impressed with his great shooting ability and he will play a great deal. As a sophomore, Turner averaged 4.9 points seeing limited action in 12 games. David is a physical education major. Varsity Summary: G FGA FGM Pct. FTA FI'M Pct. He is a real hustler and will see a lot of playing time this season and could be a starter. Jordan is majoring in physical education.

Bruce King, Forward-Center Mention this 6-5 junior's name in the More head camp and you will get a smile from the Eagle coaching staff. Bruce entered Morehead in the second-semester of his fresh man year and was used in varsity competition for the last half of the 64-65 season. In his first semester of OVC competition, Bruce averaged 12.0 points and 12. 7 rebounds in 11 games. King was slowed by injuries in pre-season practice but should return to his old form before the season begins. King is strong defensively and does a good job on the boards.
