1965-66 Basketball at Morehead State College THE BRAIN TRUST Assistant Coach Lake Kelly - Head Coach Bob Wright 1965-66 Basketball at Morehead State College Morehead, Kentucky A Message From Dr. Adron Doran PRESIDENT MOREHEAD STATE COLLEGE We are pleased to have the opportunity of competing with other institutions of higher learn ing in the field of intercollegiate athletics and we extend a cordial welcome to all visiting members of the press, athletic teams, coaches and spec tators. We have arranged what we be lieve to be a challenging schedule which will be of great interest to those who are concerned with the athletic fortunes of Morehead State College. This year's team promises to be an exciting one. We hope that all of our many friends and sup porters will be able to share with us a successful season. We wish to continue our pleasant relationship with representatives of the press, radio and tele vision and have prepared this brochure to give you pertinent information about our program and personnel. I would like to express our appreciation to you who have rendered so many services to Morehead State College in the past years and to extend a per sonal invitation to you to visit with us on the campus. To Newspaper, Radio and TV Personnel Morehead State College has had a bright history in basketball and this year's squad should fall right in line with the many exciting basket ball teams which have represented the college. We sincerely feel that this year's squad will be an interesting one to watch and that our youngsters will provide much interesting copy for you. This booklet has been prepared for your benefit and we would like to offer further services to you. We will supply pictures, biographical sketches, tapes, films or any other information which you might desire on the 1965-66 Eagles. Feel free to write me or my very capable graduate assistant, David Cawood, for pictures, further information or game passes. RAY HORNBACK Assistant to the President For Public Affairs. Head Coach - Bob Wright Bob Wright will begin his first stint in the collegiate coaching ranks this season at Morehead State College following a very successful high school coaching career. Wright succeeds Bob Laughlin, who is devoting full time to the athletic director's post after guiding the Eagles for the past 12 seasons. In 13 years of high school coaching, Wright compiled a record of 329 wins against 72 losses. He spent the last six years at Ashland High School where he rolled to 168 wins and only 29 defeats. While at Ash land he was named Kentucky "Co~ch of the Year" with his team winning the state championship in 1961. Wright is a 1950 graduate of Marshall College and received the AB degree with a major in physical education and a minor in biological sciences. He attended Morehead from 1957 to 1961 and earned the MA degree in education. Wright is a strong fundamentalist in his basketball teaching, and has used the theory that good fundamentals and good conditioning equal winning basketball teams. Wright teams play run and shoot basketball and employ a tight man-for man defense. During Wright's collegiate days, he was cap tain his senior year and voted the outstanding athlete at Marshall. He led Marshall in scoring his junior year with an 18.3 average and averaged 19.5 points per game as a senior. Wright is a 1944 graduate of Elkhorn City High School and led his team to the state tourna ment in his junior and senior years. As a senior, he was captain of the team and was selected on the All-State third team. Wright served in the Navy from 1944 to 1946 and saw duty in both the Atlantic and Pacific theatres of war. His service basketball team had a record of 100 wins and 10 losses during his span of duty. Wright is an avid fisherman, hunter, golfer and enjoys anything involving basketball. He is a member of the Baptist church. Wright is married to the former Helen Louise Anderson, a classmate at Marshall The Wrights have two children, a daughter Sarabert (10) and a son Robert Gordon, Jr. (3). A nephew, Charles Henry Wilson II, also lives with the Wrights. Lake Kelly - Assistant Coach Returning to Morehead State College as assistant basketball coach is Lake Kelly. Lake served as the freshman basketball coach at More head in 1962. He compiled a 110-6 record as freshman coach at F1orida State University in 1963, and moved to Loyola University in 1964 as assistant coach. Kelly is a native of F1em ingsburg and did his collegiate playing at Georgia Tech. He graduated from Tech in 1956 with a BS degree and received an MA degree from Morehead in 1961. Kelly will handle most of the scouting for the Eagles this season. In addition to his scouting duties, he will do much of the Morehead recruit ing. He has a vast knowledge of the game and combined with his friendly personality should be one of the top recruiters in the conference. Kelly is also golf coach. He is married to the former Martha Randall and has two sons, Lake 7 and Brian 2. John E. "Sonny" Allen Fre;shman Coach The man in charge of the freshman basketball fortunes at Morehead State College is "Sonny" Allen, a former Eagle star. Allen, who served as basket ball coach at Breckinridge Train ing School for the past 11 years, is one of Morehead's all-time scoring greats. An All-KIAC choice while playing for the Eagles from 1947 to 1950, he led Breckinridge Training School to the state tournament on two occasions with Breckinridge winning the state championship in 1946. In his first season as freshman coach last year, Allen guided the Eagles to a 7-4 record. In addition to his basketball duties, Allen coaches the Eagle baseball team. He is married to a former Morehead class mate, Merl Fair, and has three daughters, Janie 13, Susan 11, Patty 8, and one son, Dwayne 4. WFTM WKKS A Look At The 1965-66 Season The 1965-66 Morehead Eagles should be one of the most interesting teams Morehead has had in recent years. With the presence of their new head coach Bob Wright and his assistant, Lake Kelly, the Eagles will be hoping to improve on their 13-10 record last season. The Eagles finished fifth in the Ohio Valley Conference last year with a 6-8 record. Although the Eagles return eight lettermen, inexperience will be a key factor affecting the success of this year's squad. Only half of these lettermen have received enough game experience to be counted on by Wright as an experienced player. Wright spent much of the pre-season practices working strictly on fundamentals. The Eagles have only two seniors on the squad and Wright is striving to make his young club fundamentally sound. The Eagles have good over-all speed and plan to play run-and-shoot offensively. Wright will employ a tight man-to-man defense and hopes the over-all speed will be an asset to the Eagles de fensively. The Eagles have several men who can hit from outside, but do not have a consistant scoring threat with the loss of two stars from last year. All-OVC guard Harold Sergent, whom Wright tutored in high school, graduated in June and All OVC center Henry Akin did not return to More head this semester. Finding replacements for these two veterans will be a big problem for Wright and the Eagles could improve on their 13-10 1964-65 record if these replacements are found. Rounding out their final season for Morehead are 5-11 guard Tommy Castle and 6-7 forward Bob Kohler. Castle started in many of the Morehead games last year and will be a top contender for a starting guard berth. He averaged 9.6 points per game for the Eagles last year. Kohler will be making a bid for a starting forward position. He was a mainstay under the boards for the Eagles last year and averaged 7.5 points per game. Junior Bruce King is the prime center candi date for the Eagles. Bruce entered Morehead in the second semester of his freshman year and became eligible for varsity competition last year at the beginning of the second semester of last year.

GREENBERG* INTRODUCTION College coaches are some of the highest of profile employees at any college or university. In many instances the pay that they receive outdis- tances the pay of the university's chancellor or most esteemed professor. Their athletic accomplishments receive more notoriety and media atten- tion than the most celebrated lab discovery of the university's science department. For many coaches the job can be characterized as "24-7" due to the exponential growth in their responsibilities beyond con- ducting practices, teaching and coaching. And what a job - every coaching moment is surrounded by stress, and every decision, whether on or off the court, is subject to second-guessing and scrutiny and is the subject of an often vicious public debate. Moreover, a coach's job secur- ity is often conditioned on winning because wins are the equivalent of the bottom line, putting fans in the stands, bolstering alumni contribu- tions, warranting lucrative TV and cable contracts, and persuading re- cruits to accept scholarship offers.
