\ Tom Gola, 'Coach of the Year/ Back for Second Season at Explorer Helm

Thomas J. (Tom) Gola, former La Salle superstar, five-time NBA all- star, two term state legislator and successful insurance executive, is back for the second season as head coach of his alma mater's basketball squad. Gola, everybody's All Everything during La Salle's basketball glory days in the early 1950s, will again have his own difficult act to follow. The 36-year-old mentor last year was named "Coach of the Year" by both Philadelphia and New York sportswriters after leading La Salle to its best court record in history—finishing with a phenomenal 23-1 won- lost count, capturing the coveted Big Five title and placing second in the final Associated Press national rankings. Perhaps the finest all-around schoolboy star in Philadelphia history, Gola scored 2,222 points at La Salle High under coach Charlie (O'Bie) O'Brien, who called him "the greatest player since the end of the center jump." He made All American teams all four years (1951-55) at La Salle College under coach . He helped lead the Explorers to the National Invitation Tourney crown as a freshman in 1952, the NCAA title in 1954 and the NCAA runnerup slot to San Francisco and in 1955. La Salle won 107 games and lost only 19 during Tom's career. Gola's collegiate scoring and rebounding feats as an Explorer will probably never be surpassed. He finished with 2,461 points (20.3 ppg.) and 2,201 rebounds and grabbed just about every honor available at some or another during his brilliant 121 game career that has gone down in La Salle's history as the Glorious Gola Era. As a freshman, Tom was co-MVP of the N.I.T. with teammate Norm Grekin. As a junior he was Player of the Year. He is a member of the Hall of Fame at the New Madison Square Garden. He was selected to Sport Magazine's All Time All American quintet and the Helms College Basketball Hall of Fame. Temple coach called him "abso- lutely the greatest player I've ever seen." After his graduation in 1955, Tom played in the NBA for a decade with the old Philadelphia Warriors and New York Knickerbockers. Named five times to the All fcro team, Tom scored over 8,000 points during his career and helped lead the Warriors to the world championship in his rookie season, 1956. His pro career was interrupted for two years of U. S. Army service. Gola retired from the NBA after the 1966 season and was elected that November to the Pennsylvania State Legislature from the 170th District. Reelected last year, he was a member of the Higher Education, and Law and Order Committees. This November, he was the successful Republican candidate for city controller. Although this will be only his second official year in organized coach- ing, Gola is no stranger to teaching the finer points of the game. He has participated in numerous clinics, both professional and collegiate. As a pro "coach," he is unbeaten in two games, having taken over the Knickerbocker reigns twice for Eddie Donovan. As both player and coach at La Salle, he has amassed a total won-lost record of 125-20. Much in demand on the banquet circuit, Gola handled color on Phila- delphia 76ers' radio broadcasts two years ago. An excellent golfer, Tom resides in with his wife Caroline, and ten-year- old son, Thomas Christopher. ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT STAFF

JOHN J. CONBOY Athletic Director

John J. (Jack) Conboy was named La Salle Athletic Director on January

3, 1969, succeeding James J. Henry, who retired January 1 after 35 years as Explorer A.D. Conboy, 45, graduated from La Salle in 1950. He recently retired from the U.S. Army, after 20 years service, with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. A veteran of three wars

(World War II, Korea and Vietnam), Conboy served on the ROTC staff at La Salle from 1960 to 1964. Conboy was a member of St. Joseph's Prep's last city championship

football team in 1939. After three years of World War II service in Europe, Conboy enrolled at Georgetown where he played football for two years before transferring to La Salle. He was assistant football coach at St. Joseph's Prep from 1948 to 1950. He also coached Army football and basketball teams in Europe and Hawaii and organized a triathlon team at La Salle which produced three present members of the U.S. Army modern pentathlon team—Don Walheim, Bill Conroy and Gary McNulty. Conboy, who holds an MBA degree in Industrial Management from , resides in Drexel Hill with his wife, Anne, and four children.

CURTIS E. FROMAL Freshman Basketball Coach

Curtis E. (Curt) Fromal, former La Salle basketball standout, begins his second year as coach of the Ex- plorers' freshman five and assistant to head coach Tom Gola. A peppery 5-9 playmaker during his student days at La Salle, Fromal scored 411 points and made the UPI "Little All America" first team in his 1964-65 senior year—the year the Explorers gained an NIT berth against Detroit and finished with a 15-7 record under coach Bob Walters. Curt also made the Big Five and Middle Atlantic Conference first teams that year. He perhaps is best remembered for a fantastic second- half performance against arch-rival St. Joseph's in 1965 when he scored a career high 34 points and helped lead the Explorers back from a 20- pomt deficit to a near-upset against the third-ranked Hawks. In his first season as frosh coach last year, Fromal led his yearlings up from a poor start to finish with a winning 10-8 record. Curt, 28, is a former Chichester School District (Delaware County) school teacher and a native of Ridley Township, Pa., where he starred on the Ridley High varsity. Married last summer, he now lives with his wife in Chester, Pa.

Sir ft, Dr. Eugene Gallagher John Greer Charles M. Loughran Team Physician Trainer Equipment Manager gene McDonnell Assistant Coach Gene McDonnell, for the past eleven years head coach of La Salle's baseball team, has been added to the Explorers' basketball staff as an assistant coach. He'll help head coach Tom Gola with scouting and recruiting chores. McDonnell, 37, has been active in organized baseball since 1949. While a student at La Salle High School, McDonnell was the short- stop-captain of the 1951 Catholic League champs. He never missed a game during his four-year varsity career at La Salle College, playing the final three years under head coach and former Phillies' pitcher Frank Hoerst. In 1954, McDonnell hit .414 to win the Suburban League batting title and the Philadelphia Daily News "Baseball Talent Award." He graduated from La Salle in 1955. McDonnell's 11-year record at La Salle reads 125-83-3 (.595), one of the finest won-lost slates on the Explorers' coaching staff. He guided

La Salle to the NCAA (District II) playoffs for the first time in the school's history in 1964, and to Big Five championships in 1965 and 1966.

DAVID A. ERVIN Assistant Coach

Dave (Lefty) Ervin, an outstand- ing two-sport performer at La Salle until his graduation in 1968, was added to the Explorers' basketball and baseball staffs last season as a part-time coach. Ervin, 24, will freshman basketball coach Curt Fromal and handle some scouting and recruit- ing. In addition, he will be assistant to head baseball coach Gene Mc- Donnell. Dave was co-captain of La Salle's basketball and baseball teams in 1968. A starter on the basketball varsity as a sophomore, Ervin spent most of the next two years as the Explorers' sixth man and gained the reputation as one*" of the outstanding substitutes in the nation. H scored a total of 756 points for his career.

EDWARD A. ALTIERI Assistant Coach

Ed Altieri, a member of the 1952 La Salle NIT Tournament champion- ship team, joined the Explorer coaching staff near the start of last season as assistant to head coach Tom Gola. His duties include scout- ing and recruiting. Ed, who teaches commerce at Philadelphia's Bok High, graduated from La Salle in 1955. Ed, 39, is a native of South Phila- delphia where he lives with his wife, Dorothy, and two sons. COACH GOLA SEES . . .

'A Rebuilding Year'

Coming off last year's 23-1 performance, anything short of a spec- tacular season would have to be a rebuilding year, especially when you

consider the boys we lost. Players like Larry Cannon and Bernie Williams won't be easy to replace. There are some bright spots, though, and the team could surprise.

The only returning starter from last year is Kenny Durrett, but last

year's sophomore Ail-American could turn in one of the finest career

records in La Salle history if he can maintain his all-around good form.

Another good prospect is sophomore forward Bill Pleas, who, at 6-5,

is a two-way threat up front. Billy is ready to go after sitting out a year for surgery on both knees. He's a real leaper and was second in rebounds his freshman season, and could help us out a lot both defensively and offensively.

The only other veteran with seasoned experience is senior Fran

Dunphy, a solid backcourt performer whom I regard as one of the best shooters on the team when he's given a chance to score. He was

reluctant to do much shooting last year but I expect him to pick up the offense since Cannon and Williams have gone.

We're also counting on seniors like forward Ed Holzer and guard

Stan Witalec, and newcomers like transfer students Jeff Piccone and

Ronny Kennedy, both forwards, and Bob Fields, a guard. I'm also taking a hard look at several promising sophomore prospects

and other returning players from last year's varsity who haven't had much experience.

A lack of depth, particularly at center, and inexperience could cost us some games this year. We play some tough clubs, many of them on

the road. If the newcomers come through, though, we could do a little more than rebuild. MEET THE EXPLORERS

*Francis J. (Fran) Dunphy

Senior 21 5-11 155 Drexel Hill, Pa. Co-Captain

Fran has waited in the wings for two years, but gets a crack at a starting job at guard this season. A top back- court reserve last year, he rarely got a chance to do what he does best—shoot. He'll probably get plenty of scoring op- portunities this year. Fran turned in perhaps his best career performance on December 14, 1968 when, against Niagara— his first varsity start—he held superstar to only 24 points and eight field goals. Those de- fensive talents, his fine ballhandling ability and on-the-court leadership will be big assets this'year. Playing his re- liever role, Fran scored 92 points in

23 games in 1968-69 and handed off for 36 assists, fourth highest on the varsity. As a freshman in 1966-67, he averaged 16.7 ppg., scored a high of 22 against Gettysburg and made 52.9 per cent of his tries from the field. Fran was a three-sport standout at Malvern Prep (basketball coach Dan Dougherty), making the All Interacademic football and basketball teams and doing a fine job in baseball before graduating in 1966. Junior 20 6-7 188 Pittsburgh, Pa. Co-Captain

Ken was selected to the prestigious Helm's Ail-American team last year as a sophomore following the most brilliant rookie season in La Salle basketball history. And court observers predict he may go down as one of the standout big men in Philadelphia basketball history. He certainly appears destined to compile one of the finest career records at La Salle since the sport was inaugurated here near the turn of the century. He can—and did—do it all. He averaged an amazing 20 points per game to lead all Explorer scorers last season; he racked up more field goals

(191), free throws (98), rebounds (284) and points (480) than any other teammate on a high-scoring squad. His from-the-field percentage of 52.3 also was team best. Ken's career high performances came last year

against St. Francis (40 points) and American University (21 rebounds).

He also turned in stellar defensive performances against Villanova and

Duquesne, among others. Philadelphia Daily News columnist Bill Conlin ". called him: . . The most polished all-around big man to ever hit the

Big Five." Ken led his freshman team in every offensive category in 1967-68, coming off a fantastic high school career which marked him

as one of the most pursued young schoolboy prospects in the nation.

He made scholastic All-American two years in a row at Pittsburgh's

Schenley High (coach Willard Fisher), and was named best player in the Eastern U.S. by the Basketball News following his senior year—when he averaged 28 points and 20 rebounds a game. Ken also received the MVP award at the Johnstown Tourney that year. General business major.

Bob transferred to La Salle this year from Brandywine (Del.) Junior College, where he captained coach Harry Pappas' state championship team last year. He was named to his junior college All-Region team following a standout 1968-69 season during which he led the Brandywine squad in scoring with 479 (17.4 ppg.) and aver-

aged eight assists per game. Bob is a good ballhandler and drives well underneath. He played forward in junior college, but probably will be used at guard for LSC. He was second leading Catholic League scorer in Chicago his senior year at St. Mel's High (coach Bob Slingerland). Marketing major.

Edgar L. (Ed) Holzer

Senior 21 6-4 175 Philadelphia, Pa.

Ed is a steady, hustling, desire ballplayer who has been used as a spot reliever the past two seasons. He's seen action in only 19 varsity games and took only 12 shots ~W -**£!» m from the floor all last year. His best varsity performance was a six-point output against American University in 1968-69. Ed led the 1966-67 freshmen in rebounding (87) and averaged 11.8 ppg. He played in the backcourt two years for coach Jack Pergolin's Cardinal Dougherty team and made second squad All-Catholic his senior year, 1965-66, when the Cardinals went 17-4. That year he received the Coaches' Graduation Award as the student excelling best in scholarship and athletics. He also served as a tutor in the Community Service Corps. Business major.

Ronny (correct name), a standout court performer for Dodge City (Kansas) Com- munity Junior College the past two years, transferred to La Salle this year with two

years' eligibility remaining. He is one of the most promising all-around ballplayers to come out of the Washington area the past few years. Ronny led the Dodge City

boys in rebounds last year with 289, while piling up 393 points (13.6 ppg.) and hitting on 55 per cent of his shots from the field. Following a superior 1968-69 season, he was picked to the Kansas Jayhawk Junior College Conference All-Star Team (Western Division) at forward. Ronny starred for Fairmount Heights High in Washington, where he was graduated in 1967. Sociology major.

A big forward with excellent reflexes, Jeff was team top rebounder last season for the Oklahoma Military Academy (Clare- mont, Okla.) quintet. He transferred to La Salle this year with three years' eligibility remaining. Jeff also was one of his team's top scorers last season, averaging 13.5 ppg. He finished the schedule with 380 rebounds, leading a squad that missed a conference title by just one game. One of the finest prospects to come out of the South Jersey area recently, Jeff starred at Sacred Heart High in Vine- land (coach Vince Land), setting numerous school scoring and - ing marks. Bill was picked player of the year in West Chester County, 1967, besides being named All-County and being selected to the New York Daily News high school team. Sociology major.

If desire, drive and hustle alone made superstars, Bob would have been Ail-Ameri- f-r-f* can by now. What he lacks in raw talent, he makes up in guts and persistence. Bob saw only spotty action for last year's var- sity, appearing in 10 games, taking 10 shots and scoring but four points. He grabbed off 10 rebounds, though, more than some team- mates who saw more action. After being shunted to a reserve slot in pre-season practice his freshman year (1967-68), he battled himself into a starting role and wound up as fourth leading scorer with 12.1 ppg. That year he also was the best foul shooter on the team. He can play either up front or in the backcourt and his versatility could be a big asset this year. As a freshman at Cardinal Dougherty High, Bob was 17th man on a 29-man team; he was cut sophomore year; made JV reserve junior year; but came back senior year, made the varsity, started, was picked co-captain and made All- Catholic. Monday, December 1, 8 P.M. (EST), at Calkins Gymnasium, Hempstead, N.Y.

SERIES RECORD:

LA SALLE 1, HOFSTRA OUTLOOK: Sophs could be key to Dutchmen's attack in a rebuilding year. Lost are last year's three top scorers (56 ppg. total average) and schedule has tightened up. Top returners are senior guard Bob McLaughlin (6.2 ppg.), junior forward Rich Link (6-5, 6.0 ppg.) and 5-8 junior playmaker Dan Swartz, who returned from in- jured list at mid-season last year. Up from a 16-8 freshman squad are 6-4 forward Tom Kelleher, 6-8 center Dave Bell from Philadel- phia's Olney High, Gary Doyle, 6-1 guard (20.2 ppg. freshman) and 6-0 guard Jim Pugh. Veter- ans must improve and sophs must come through for a successful season. Coach Paul Lynner (W-107, L-76)

SERIES RECORD: LA SALLE 24, ALBRIGHT 2

Center Ron Lloyd (6-3, 9.7 ppg.) and guard John Zarubnicky (5-8, 8.8 ppg.), the co-captains, are the only senior lettermen. Should be an improved team. LA SALLE O, MARSHALL 1

OUTLOOK: Iffy. Thundering Herd lacks season- ing and experience. Gone are standouts Danny D'Antoni and Jim Davidson—D'Antoni was all- conference court general. Will rely on limited- experience vets like Bernard Bradshaw, Joe Taylor and Dave Smith, three 6-6 forwards, and sophs RusserT Lee, 6-5 forward, D. J. Jebbia, 6-0 guard, and Bill Bertalan, 6-7 center. Lee is billed as potential superstar, though, and '69 frosh were undefeated. Big job for first year coach Stew Way is developing full poten- tial from sophs and helping veterans. OUTLOOK: New coach Gary Hulst has mostly new material to work with; only two seniors return this season and Bobcats are looking toward next year. Only starter back is Don Luce, 6-4 forward (11.1 ppg.), one of the seniors. Other is Bob Crnkovich, a 68-69 reserve forward who saw little action. Also returning are spot relievers Gene Lewis, for- ward, center Dean Kratovil and guards Jim Petek and Nick Fullerton. Bright prospects, though inexperienced, are 6-8 Ted Taylor, who was red-shirted last season; soph guard Terry Quinn, 5-10; and 6-2 transfer guard Bill Brickhouse.

Jimmy England, 6-1 junior (12.3 ppg.) and Rudy Kinard, 5-11 junior (4.5 ppg.) probably will be moved from front to back- court to plug graduation holes. Big (6-10) Bobby Croft returns at center (15.2 ppg.). Up front probably will be veteran Don Johnson, 6-4 (11.5 ppg.) and soph Tommy Leone, 6-7. OUTLOOK: Fairly experienced squad, despite loss of five lettermen, including three starters from last year. Were very good at home (12-1) in 68-69, very poor on the road (5-11), but play a tough schedule. Veteran coach has four lettermen and a junior as probable starters: Doug Howard, 6-3 guard (15.4 ppg.) has been a regular for two years; Jim Miller, 6-5 guard (1.8 ppg.), a backcourt reserve last year; Scott Warner, 6-6 senior, alternated at center-* last season, gets the post this year (10.4 ppg.); Paul Ruffner, 6-9 senior, is moved from center to forward (15.1 ppg., 268 rebounds); and LeRoy Maughan, 6-8 forward, a reserve last year. SERIES RECORD: LA SALLE 6, WESTERN KENTUCKY 11 OUTLOOK: Hi lltoppers could be a national power this year. Looking for added speed and board strength at forwards, Coach has six other veterans to choose from: 6-4 Jerome Perry and 6-8 Wayne Bright are most expe- rienced; 6-8 , 6-9 Walker Banks, 6-4 Jerry Walsh and 6-4 Paul Haskins, all have logged playing time. OUTLOOK: New faces, new coach, a lot of question marks. has coached successfully in junior college (76-14) and high school (129-45) but never in senior college. Team is missing first four and sixth scorers from last year's 13-13 team. Returners are Mike Caruso, No. 5 scorer (6.3 ppg.) last year at guard; big (6-9) Joe Bergman at center; and guards Jack Ketterer and Frank Hogan. Perhaps biggest question mark is potential superstar Cyril Baptiste,* 6-9, 22$ pounder, a soph who didn't play for freshmen last year. Some pre- season hope for junior college transfer help. Also back are top scorer Jarrett Durham (17.4 ppg.) and play-maker Billy Zopf. Fifth man could be Willie Hines, last year's top reserve (4.2 ppg.), potential hot-shot Steve McHugh or George Gilbert. SERIES RECORD:

LA SALLE 1, DETROIT 1

OUTLOOK: Titans' hopes were built around Ail- American , now with the ABA. "V "H Spencer left behind a team that new coach Jim Harding called "questionable" before Hay- wood left. Of the nine remaining vets, only one, 6-7 senior Larry Moore, showed any con- sistency (12.8 ppg., 8.4 rebounds). From then on it's a choice between lettermen guards Dwight Dunlap and , forward Vern DeSilva and reserve center Al Peake, junior reserves Jim Calucchia and Randy Anteau, or possible junior college transfers. Top soph is 6-1 Dave McDonald (18.2 ppg. frosh). Outlook "questionable" with Haywood, must be des- perate without him. Coach Jim Harding (First Year)

OUTLOOK: Lack frontcourt depth and are re- building. New coach Tom Young has back seniors Gordon Stiles, 6-3 forward (18.7 ppg.); Vince Schafmeister, 6-8 center (15.3 ppg.) and Bill Kagarise, 6-1 guard (12.5 ppg.), Eagles' three top scorers last year. But many hopes are pinned on 6-3 guard Mike Lynch, junior college transfer; soph transfer 6-2 Dave Olive- fW-f rio, and 6-5 soph forward Gary Wallen. Lynch tore up record book last season at Montgomery Junior College (25.7 ppg.) and Oliverio was second best scorer last year on the U. of Louisville frosh. Need to pick up offense, lack some depth up front, but could contend for MAC Eastern Division. I Coach Tom Young (First Year)

SERIES RECORD: LA SALLE 11, NIAGARA 12

OUTLOOK: Calvin Murphy, little man (5-10) with the big average (32.4 ppg.), was nation's third leading scorer last year and should be better in his senior campaign. Other excellent seniors on tough club are 6-6 Bob Churchwell (11 ppg.) who was team's best* rebounder; 6-5 Steve Schafer (12.4 ppg.); 6-3 Mike Samuel (12.8 ppg.) and 5-10 guard Mike Brown (7.5 ppg.). Purple Eagles are plenty deep in lettermen, like 6-6 Joe Adomanis from Philadelphia's Bishop Neumann High. Leading soph is 6-4 forward Marshall Wingate (24.6 ppg. frosh). Another possibility to start is transfer Wayne Jones, 6-4, out of Pratt Junior College in Kansas. Again, Niagara's weakness will be defense they lack a big man. Coach Frank Layden (W-11, L-13)

Saturday, February 21, 8:00 P.M. (EST), at the Palestra

SERIES RECORD: LA SALLE 9, VILLANOVA 11 OUTLOOK: Wildcats look awfully good despite loss of six lettermen. Much of the good look is Howard Porter, 6-8 All-American (22.4 ppg., 375 rebounds) for last year's 21-5 club. Porter leads a new running offense attack with fellow returners Fran O'Hanlon, 6-0 guard (7.6 ppg.), and Sam Sims, 6-5 senior forward (4.3 ppg.). Soph , 6-5 guard, is fast and an accurate passer and could battle into starting role with new look attack. Very deep, very experienced bench is led by 6-5 Clarence Smith, versatile 6-3 John Fox, and Porter backup Leon Wojnowski, 6-9. If new offense works maybe even if it doesn't—Wildcats should roar. Good bet for Big Five. Coach Jack Kraft (W-162, L-60)

-%;r\ 1968-69: BEST SEASON EVER

The Explorers enjoyed their best basketball season in history in 1968-69, finishing 23-1, winning their last 15 games (a new school record), sweeping Philadelphia's coveted Big Five title and ranking second in the final Associated Press national poll.

It was the highest scoring (89.0 ppg.) team in La Salle history; it was the first LSC team ever to go unbeaten on the road (8-0); it topped 100 points six times (no other La Salle team did so more than three times in a season); it finished No. 3 in the nation in victory margin (18.1 ppg.); it was an explosive team that smashed another school record with a 67-point second half against St. Francis. The list of the defeated included some of the finest basketball powers in the country—teams like Duquesne, Villanova, Detroit, Western Kentucky, Temple, St. Joseph's, Indiana, Creighton. The only loss was to nationally-ranked South Carolina, 62-59, in the Quaker City Tourna- ment finals. La Salle had many individual standouts: "super soph" and Helms Ail-American Ken Durrett and rugged senior Larry Cannon, an honorable mention Ail-American and high ABA draft choice; hot- Bernie Williams, now with the NBA; playmaker Roland Taylor and defensive ace Stan Wlodarczyk—not to mention stellar reserve per- formances by Ed Szczesny and Fran Dunphy. One of the finest performances of all was by former La Salle All- American Tom Gola, who blended all that talent into a powerful, tight- knit unit that ranks as one of the greatest in Philadelphia history. Gola, a member of La Salle's 1952 NIT and 1954 NCAA championship teams, probably was one of the first men in history to be named "Coach of the Year" (by both Philadelphia and New York writers) in his first season at the helm. Durrett, an excellent prospect for future Ail-American and profes- sional recognition, led the Explorers in every offensive category and became the highest scoring rookie in La Salle history. The 6-7 soph from Pittsburgh averaged 20 ppg., took team rebound honors (11.8), had team high individual games of 40 points at St. Francis and 21 re- bounds at American University, and scored on 52.3 per cent of his attempts from the field. Cannon, 6-5 senior from Philadelphia, finished second in scoring (18.9) but held a commanding lead in assists with 140. Larry matched his best career performances against Detroit with 32 points and finished as La Salle's fourth best all-time scorer with 1,430 points. Williams averaged 18.4 ppg. The 6-3 senior from Washington, D.C., hit a career high of 32 against Miami and finished as La Salle's seventh all-time scorer with 1,230 points. Taylor, 6-0 senior who also hails from Washington, helped engineer one of college basketball's most devastating fast breaks. He played the best defense in the East and made himself the most improved shooter on the club by hitting ^50.2 per cent of his shots from the field and averaging 11.5 ppg. He also hit a career high, against Creighton, Penn and St. Joseph's, with 19 points. Wlodarczyk, 6-7 senior from Mahanoy City, Pa., was La Salle's best defensive big man, averaging only 6.7 ppg. but doing a consistent job up front against the top opponents. He grabbed a career high of 18 rebounds against Duquesne—despite a broken nose—and scored a season high 17 against Niagara and Hofstra. Szczesny, 6-8 senior from Plymouth Meeting, Pa., had several great second-half performances both as starter and as reserve. He scored 16 of his 18 points and grabbed 14 of 16 rebounds in the second half at Niagara and came off the bench to hit 6 for 7 from the field against Villanova. Dunphy, 5-11 junior (who joins Durrett as co-captain this season), did a brilliant job in his first varsity start at Niagara, holding Ail- American Calvin Murphy to a sub-par 8 for 24 from the floor.

For La Salle basketball, it hopefully was the dawn of another "Gola Era." The first, with Tom the player, produced two nationaf champion- ships and a 102-19 won-lost record. The second, with Tom the coach, was off to a promising start.

56 L THE LA SALLE STORY

La Salle College celebrated its Centennial Year in 1963 and now is well into its second century of service to higher education and the community of Philadelphia. The College was founded March 20, 1863 by the Brothers of the Christian Schools and derives its name from the founder of the Christian Brothers, St. John Baptist de La Salle. By 1929, having outgrown three previous locations in Philadelphia, the campus was moved to its present 30 acre site at 20th st. and Olney ave., in the East Germantown section of the city. The Evening Division was inaugurated in 1946 in response to the needs of industry throughout the metropolitan area. Since 1945, La Salle has experienced the most dramatic period of expansion in its history. Present enrollment in both Day and Evening Divisions is over 6,400 students as compared to the 1940 enrollment of about 400. In the last 16 years, twelve new buildings have been added to the campus. Both the Day and Evening Divisions offer degree pro- grams in Arts and Sciences and Business Administration. Eight modern residence halls accommodate over 800 out of town students. A $2 million, three story College Union Building, completed in 1959, includes a Little Theatre as well as dining halls, assembly rooms, ballroom and other student facilities. The $2.5 million Science Center, which houses modern lecture rooms and laboratory facilities for study and research in Biology, Chemistry, Geology, Physics and Psy- chology opened in 1960. New dormitories to accommodate 200 students opened last year. Under construction are an athletic activities building and a new classroom building. Additional educational areas are located on a 52 acre campus in Elkins Park and on an 80 acre area in Springfield Township. The Army Artillery ROTC program was initiated in 1950 and now numbers more than 1,000 cadets.
