A SURVEY OF THE BEES AND WASPS OF FIFTEEN CHALK GRASSLAND AND CHALK HEATH SITES WITHIN THE EAST SUSSEX SOUTH DOWNS Steven Falk, 2011 A SURVEY OF THE BEES AND WASPS OF FIFTEEN CHALK GRASSLAND AND CHALK HEATH SITES WITHIN THE EAST SUSSEX SOUTH DOWNS Steven Falk, 2011 Abstract For six years between 2003 and 2008, over 100 site visits were made to fifteen chalk grassland and chalk heath sites within the South Downs of Vice-county 14 (East Sussex). This produced a list of 227 bee and wasp species and revealed the comparative frequency of different species, the comparative richness of different sites and provided a basic insight into how many of the species interact with the South Downs at a site and landscape level. The study revealed that, in addition to the character of the semi-natural grasslands present, the bee and wasp fauna is also influenced by the more intensively-managed agricultural landscapes of the Downs, with many species taking advantage of blossoming hedge shrubs, flowery fallow fields, flowery arable field margins, flowering crops such as Rape, plus plants such as buttercups, thistles and dandelions within relatively improved pasture. Some very rare species were encountered, notably the bee Halictus eurygnathus Blüthgen which had not been seen in Britain since 1946. This was eventually recorded at seven sites and was associated with an abundance of Greater Knapweed. The very rare bees Anthophora retusa (Linnaeus) and Andrena niveata Friese were also observed foraging on several dates during their flight periods, providing a better insight into their ecology and conservation requirements. -

Destination: Masurian Lake Distrikt The Mazurski Landscape Park embraces the central Mazurian Lake district, known as the “green lungs” of Poland.With numerous lakeside resorts in the area, this is the most popular holiday destination for Poles. With almost a third of its 50,000 hectares (124,000 acres) accounted for by water, the park has the largest number of lakes – more than 1,000 – in the region, many of which are linked by rivers and canals. The area contains national parks sheltering various rare species of flora and fauna. Lake ¸uknajno, near Mikolajki, is listed as a World Biosphere Reserve, and is a nesting ground for mute swans among other rare breeds. Only marked trails can be followed in this protected area. One of the best ways to explore the “Land of the Great Masurian Lakes” is by a locally hired yacht, canoe or kayak. The peaceful town of Mràgowo, with its 18th-and 19th-century architecture, is an ideal base, as is engaging Olsztyn. Someone who has never stayed in this area is not aware of how Mazury climate much he has lost, but someone who has just once been tempted to experience the Masurian adventure, will Wind in the sails…, remain faithful to the Land of the Great Mazury Lakes forever. The unques- photo GEP Chroszcz tionable natural and touristic values of the region are substantiated by the fact that it qualified for the final of the international competition, the New 7 Wonders of Nature, in which Mazury has been recognised as one of the 28 most beautiful places in the world. We shall wander across these unique areas along the water route whose main axis, leading from Węgorzewo to Nida Lake, is over 100 km long. If one is willing to visit everything, a distance of at least 330 km needs to be covered, and even then some places will remain undiscov- ered. The route leads to Węgorzewo, via Giżycko and Ryn to Mikołajki, from where you can set off to Pisz or Ruciane-Nida. If one wants to sail slowly, the proposed route will take less than two weeks. Choosing the express option, it is enough to reserve several days to cover it. What can fascinate us during the trip we are just starting? First of all, the environment, the richness of which can be hardly experienced on other routes. -

The lowland, largely deforested part of the study area (Łódź Hills), was dominated by Heriades truncorum (4.3% of total catch) and Hylaeus communis (2.7%), while the wooded Świętokrzyskie Mountains were dominated by bumblebees, particularly by Bombus lucorum (4.2%) with its cleptoparasite Psithyrus bohemicus (6.8%), as well as Bombus pascuorum (3.7%), Bombus lapidarius (2.4%) and Psithyrus campestris (2.4%). Key words: Hymenoptera, Apoidea, Apiformes, central Poland, occurrence of species INTRODUCTION This work is a contribution to the knowledge about the occurrence of bees (Apiformes) of central Poland and the Świętokrzyskie Mountains. We assumed that central Poland is the area within a 100-km radius of the Łódź city. It lies at the borders between three geographic regions: Małopolska (Little Poland), Wielkopolska (Great Poland), and Mazovia. This area is intermediate between the uplands of southern Poland and the lowlands of northern Poland. The middle part of the study area is occupied by the Łódź Hills. Until the early 20th century, they were covered by the Łódź Forest, with a large share of beech and fir in the tree layer and of montane plant species in the herb layer (Zaręba 1981). -

Gravel pits, both in active use and restored, provide important replacement habitats and nesting requisites for wild bees formerly specialized in nesting in dynamic fluvial landscapes. Species inventories in six Central European gravel pits report 245 species of wild bees, and this study found 48 species of wild bees and the domesticated Apis mellifera in the refilled section of the Obermayr gravel pit in Riem, Munich. The tested inventory method of in-situ photo-documentation, in- stead of voucher specimen collection, was feasible for most bee families, but is not applicable for Halictidae and some small nomad bees (genus Nomada) or mini- miners (Andrena subgenus Micrandrena), as well as species complexes in the genus Bombus. An abundance and variety of nature, histori- cal monuments, and a respect for traditions, intriguing modern times, and hospitality are some of the elements which make our country very interesting for foreign visitors. The emergent modernity of contemporary Poland moves forward with full respect and consideration for the traditions and the cultural differences of its regions. The Polish landscape is very diversified. The south contains the Carpathian and Sudeten Mountains. The Lowlands and Uplands stretch across central Poland. The northern part of the country with its Masurian and Pomeranian lake lands has its well forested, rolling hills, dotted with thousands of lakes and further north we have the sandy beaches on the Baltic coast. Our eventful history and central location in Europe, where religions and the influence and authority of many nations have met over the centuries, has made Poland a country that intrigues and fascinates visitors with its material and spiritual culture. The larger Polish cities are the main destination for many travellers. These cities possess a wealth of historical monuments, are host to prominent artists and offer a variety of cultural events. Polish cities are also visited by business people, and of course shoppers, sometimes playing the role of an appealing stopover for these travellers on their way to other parts of Europe.
