  • Transmediating Tim Burton's Gotham City
Transmediating Tim Burton’s Gotham City: Brand Convergence, Child Audiences, and Batman: The Animated Series MATTHEW FREEMAN, University of Nottingham ABSTRACT During the early 1990s, Batman, a highly valued media franchise, was an ever-expanding phenomenon, with franchise owner Warner Bros. having reinvigorated the property with Batman (Tim Burton, 1989). This article will examine the subsequent six-year period of its franchise production, using Batman as a case study for exploring the ways in which distinct versions of a fictional character – each constructed under different creative contexts with differing artistic sensibilities, aimed at varying groups of audiences across media – became the combined products of brand convergence across each media iteration, a concept that was crucial to the transmediality of Batman as both commercial brand and fictional storyworld. KEYWORDS Transmedia storytelling, media branding, franchise, merchandise, superhero characters. Introduction William Uricchio rightly acknowledges that ‘Gotham City as a brand is a highly valued asset not only of the Batman franchise, but of the larger corporate entities of DC Comics and Warner Bros’ (2010, 119). During the early 1990s, this Batman brand was an ever-expanding phenomenon, with franchise owner Warner Bros. having reinvigorated the property with Batman (Tim Burton, 1989). Batman Returns (Tim Burton, 1992), its sequel, was soon in development, and Warner Bros. would complement its theatrical release with a multitude of products in and across other media. Alongside the film was a series of video games, comic books and tie-in merchandise, each simultaneously promoting both Burton’s blockbuster film and the character’s latest television outing, Batman: The Animated Series (Warner Bros.

  • Horror Movie Genre in Order to Expose Any Commonalities, Consistencies, Structural Or Harmonic Similarities Or Significant and Communicative Compositional Approaches
How Film & TV Music Communicate – Vol.2 Text © Brian Morrell 2013 Chapter 4 H O R R O R This chapter analyses some key musical repertoire of the horror movie genre in order to expose any commonalities, consistencies, structural or harmonic similarities or significant and communicative compositional approaches. Music analysed includes: Final Destination (Shirley Walker) Predator (Alan Silvestri) Silence of the Lambs (Howard Shore) The Exorcist (Tubular Bells - Mike Oldfield) The Thing (John Carpenter) Wrong Turn (Elia Cmiral) Drag me to Hell (Christopher Young) A Nightmare on Elm Street (Charles Bernstein) Scream (Marco Beltrami) Poltergeist (Jerry Goldsmith) The Grudge (Christopher Young) Anaconda (Randy Edelman) Silence of the Lambs (Howard Shore) The Shining (Wendy Carlos) FINAL DESTINATION Shirley Walker Capitalizing on our morbid fear of death, Final Destination is a 2000 American supernatural horror movie (now franchise) about a group of teenagers who ‘cheat death’. A student on a plane which is about to take off has a premonition that the plane will crash after takeoff. He panics and leaves the plane with a group of others. Ultimately the plane does eventually crash. By saving himself and a handful of other passengers the main protagonist has altered the future, or ‘death’s design’. The group of teenagers continues to be stalked by ‘death’, which claims back their lives one by one. The idea of an invisible force killing its victims is not a new one, but the idea of ‘death’ having a design and a plan works well in a modern context. One of the main points which so enticed producers into making the film is that there is no physical figure – no monster or killer.

  • The Alliance for Women Film Composers
Volume 4, Issue No. 1. Creating a More Inclusive Industry: The Alliance for Women Film Composers Maddie Grills Tulane University, New Orleans, Louisiana, USA ÒÏ Abstract: This case examines the obstacles women film composers face because of their gender. Throughout history, women in the West have been excluded from the musical canon because of a lack of access to resources and education that would allow them to have a career in composition. As a result, the musical canon lacks the unique musical perspectives that could have been generated by women and contributed to an enrichment of Western culture. Today, women composers continue to face challenges in higher education, facing gender discrimination from within music departments. Those that continue with a career in music beyond college face discrepancies in annual earnings compared to men. They experience a lack of mentorship, sexual harassment, difficulty maintaining a work-life balance, tokenism, a lack recognition for their work, as well as isolation. All of these factors contribute to the low numbers of women working as film composers. The text raises the question of who the responsibility for change should fall to. Should it fall to the men in more powerful positions in these studios and films? Or should it fall to the women themselves, who may know better what should be done to make the film industry a more welcoming environment for them? In the face of these obstacles, some of the women have attempted to create communities through social media, yet these communities are only a small step towards creating change and inclusion in a male-dominated field.

  • An Evolutionary Study of Soundtracks from DC Comics' Superheroes
CRESCENDOS OF THE CAPED CRUSADERS: AN EVOLUTIONARY STUDY OF SOUNDTRACKS FROM DC COMICS’ SUPERHEROES Anna J. DeGalan A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS December 2020 Committee: Jeffrey Brown, Advisor Esther Clinton Jeremy Wallach © 2020 Anna DeGalan All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Jeffrey Brown, Advisor With the transition from comics to television shows, and later onto the big screen, superheroes gained their own theme songs and soundtracks that captured the attention of the audience for years to come. From catchy musical themes, from the old television shows, to the masterfully scored music blasting from the speakers of movie theaters all over the world, it was superheroes’ uniquely composed soundtracks (in conjunction with SFX, acting cues, and genre conventions of superhero films) that further crafted the iconography that made each character into the superhero being portrayed on-screen. While much of the focus of past textual analysis of films within the superhero genre has focused on characterizations of heroes, visual iconography, and the logistics of filming or framing a scene, academia has vastly overlooked the necessity of a film’s soundtrack, not only as a basic narrative tool and genre locator, but as a means to further understand how a cultural perception of the material is being reflected by the very musical choices presented on a score. While there has been an influx of research focusing on how a culture perceives its heroes – in this case superheroes – during times of great change within a society (either politically, socially, economically, or culturally; for example, the terrorist attack on American soil on 9/11/2001), I have found there to be a lack of research involving how the musical themes of superheroes reflect our cultural views and feelings at a specific point in time.
