With the pandemic still trekking on, it’s important to keep yourself safe during the spooky season. Taking precautions, like washing your hands and wearing masks, will ensure you stay healthy and well. Many people are debating whether Halloween should be cancelled due to COVID-19. Corporations and businesses that rely on the holiday are hoping to keep the customs alive. Candy manufacturers, costume designers, and even the movie industry all look to Halloween as their big boom in business. The cancellation of Halloween will also impact the kids that see the day as a joy. In an interview with The New York Times, Dr. Gosh said, “I think completely taking away Halloween could be detrimental to some of the mental health issues that kids are facing right now.” Halloween is an outlet for kids to express their creativity and have some fun. ABSTRACT “WHY SO SERIOUS?” COMICS, FILM AND POLITICS, OR THE COMIC BOOK FILM AS THE ANSWER TO THE QUESTION OF IDENTITY AND NARRATIVE IN A POST-9/11 WORLD by Kyle Andrew Moody This thesis analyzes a trend in a subgenre of motion pictures that are designed to not only entertain, but also provide a message for the modern world after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. The analysis provides a critical look at three different films as artifacts of post-9/11 culture, showing how the integration of certain elements made them allegorical works regarding the status of the United States in the aftermath of the attacks. Jean Baudrillard‟s postmodern theory of simulation and simulacra was utilized to provide a context for the films that tap into themes reflecting post-9/11 reality. Understanding the various artists and audiences and what Batman means to them is to understand changing trends and thinking in American culture. The character of Batman has developed into a symbol with relevant characteristics that develop and evolve with each new story and new author. The Batman canon has become so large and contains so many different audiences that it has become a franchise that can morph to fit any group of viewers/readers. Our understanding of Batman and the many readings of him gives us insight into ourselves as a culture in our particular place in history. -

Introduction Growing up I have seen many films, but one film has always stood out for me: Corpse Bride (2005). As soon as we got the DVD of this film, I must have watched it at least 20 times. This film marked the start of my love for Tim Burton films and music by Danny Elfman. After Corpse Bride I have seen many other films by Tim Burton. What has always intrigued me about his films, is that the storylines are quite dark and often use dark colours. This insinuates that Burton’s films could be horror films,1 but this is not always the case. The question this raises is to what extent the music in his films features horror elements. The main question in this thesis is: To what extent does the music of Danny Elfman in films by Tim Burton express fright? In this thesis I am focusing on the music itself, because I want to find out whether it is obvious from the music alone that it is frightening or not. -

Tim Burton On Michelle Pfeiffer's CATWOMAN; Compares His Version Of BATMAN To Christopher Nolan's In an interview with Cinemax magazine, the Dark Shadows director briefly addresses the differences between his version of Batman and the current Nolan incarnation, and reveals why he loved Michelle Pfeiffer's take on Catwoman so much.. Mark "RorMachine" Cassidy - 5/2/2012 Tim Burton's Dark Shadows is almost with us, and the director is doing the rounds along with the cast to promote the movie. But in an interview with Cinemax, it's one of his earlier movies that is brought up. Tim Burton's Batman is widely regarded as one of the best CBMs of all time, and undoubtedly ushered in a new era for the genre after Hollywood had pretty much written off comic book based movies after the disastrous Superman 4. Of course it wasn't long before Burton's good work was undone by Mr Shumacker, but be that as it may, his original take on The Caped Crusader still holds up today. Indeed, for a lot of fans his Batman is a more accurate interpretation of the character than Christopher Nolan's. What does Burton think? Unfortunately he doesn't go into much detail, but does admit Nolan has at least outdone him when it comes to the darkness.. "I always get told that my material is dark, but nowadays my version of Batman looks like a lighthearted romp in comparision to Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight." The director also discusses Michelle Pfieffer's take on Catwoman from his follow up, Batman Returns. -

Danny Elfman: Batman Returns Birth of a Penguin Part 1, Birth of a Penguin Part 2, Batman vs the Circus, The Rise and Fall from Grace (For component 3: Appraising) Background information and performance circumstances The composer Danny Elfman (b. 1953) is a self-taught composer and is unusual because of his parallel career as a rock musician with the band Oingo Boingo. He grew up in Los Angeles and is the youngest son of two teachers. While at school, Elfman wanted to be a filmmaker. ‘I always thought that some way or other I’d end up in film, but somehow I ended up in music.’ Tim Burton and Elfman had a close working relationship and collaborated on a number of films including Beetlejuice (1988), The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993) and Planet of the Apes (2001). Of all the films they have made together, Batman remained Elfman’s biggest grossing film until Spider-man (2002). More importantly, Batman brought Elfman to public attention and established him as a creditable film composer. Elfman often scores much of his music around leitmotifs then develops them through the use of variations. The use of thematic development illustrates Elfman’s influences from composers such as Bernard Herrman (Psycho, 1960) from the Golden Age of films. Having established the main materials of the score, Elfman works through the film chronologically, using the materials he has developed in a manner which is extremely unmethodical. Batman Returns (1992) is the sequel to Batman (1989), directed by Tim Burton with Michael Keaton reprising the role of Bruce Wayne/Batman. -
