  • Transmediating Tim Burton's Gotham City
Transmediating Tim Burton’s Gotham City: Brand Convergence, Child Audiences, and Batman: The Animated Series MATTHEW FREEMAN, University of Nottingham ABSTRACT During the early 1990s, Batman, a highly valued media franchise, was an ever-expanding phenomenon, with franchise owner Warner Bros. having reinvigorated the property with Batman (Tim Burton, 1989). This article will examine the subsequent six-year period of its franchise production, using Batman as a case study for exploring the ways in which distinct versions of a fictional character – each constructed under different creative contexts with differing artistic sensibilities, aimed at varying groups of audiences across media – became the combined products of brand convergence across each media iteration, a concept that was crucial to the transmediality of Batman as both commercial brand and fictional storyworld. KEYWORDS Transmedia storytelling, media branding, franchise, merchandise, superhero characters. Introduction William Uricchio rightly acknowledges that ‘Gotham City as a brand is a highly valued asset not only of the Batman franchise, but of the larger corporate entities of DC Comics and Warner Bros’ (2010, 119). During the early 1990s, this Batman brand was an ever-expanding phenomenon, with franchise owner Warner Bros. having reinvigorated the property with Batman (Tim Burton, 1989). Batman Returns (Tim Burton, 1992), its sequel, was soon in development, and Warner Bros. would complement its theatrical release with a multitude of products in and across other media. Alongside the film was a series of video games, comic books and tie-in merchandise, each simultaneously promoting both Burton’s blockbuster film and the character’s latest television outing, Batman: The Animated Series (Warner Bros.

Ottman, John (b. 1964) by Richard G. Mann Encyclopedia Copyright © 2015, glbtq, Inc. Entry Copyright © 2007 glbtq, Inc. Reprinted from http://www.glbtq.com American film composer John Ottman has gained international acclaim for his innovative and emotionally resonant musical scores for such diverse films as Superman Returns, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, Apt Pupil, and The Usual Suspects. In addition to scoring over thirty full-length motion pictures, Ottman has created musical compositions for numerous short films, television programs, and commercials. Although he prefers to devote himself to music, Ottman has worked as both editor and composer on several occasions; he is reputed to be the only individual who simultaneously fulfills both these roles in the production of major American motion pictures. Prominent among the films that he has both edited and scored are seven created in collaboration with his close friend, director Bryan Singer, who is also openly gay. On several occasions, Ottman has cautioned against interpreting all of his contributions to mainstream films in terms of his gay identity. However, in a 2000 interview with Dennis Hensley, he explained that he thought his experiences as a gay man strongly influenced his music. Specifically, he maintained that the "longing tone" conveyed by many of his scores is an expression of his "empathy for people who go through the coming-out process." In this interview, he further stated: "I was really fortunate to be in a very liberal family, but even in that environment I felt there was something wrong with me." Ottman's comments imply a relationship between gay identify and a certain degree of alienation from others.

How Film & TV Music Communicate – Vol.1 Text © Brian Morrell 2013 Chapter 4 H O W H A R M O N Y S P E A K S This chapter deals with modern and traditional techniques of using harmony and chord voicing to extort specific emotions. The chapter addresses a combination of fairly simple observations regarding how harmonies ‘speak’ to create a feeling of mood and feeling, through to more complex and deeper types of analysis. Central to the study, as always, is the issue of how music communicates meaning and how that meaning works in the film. The films and music analysed in this chapter are: Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone - Main Theme & Diagon Ally (John Williams) The English Patient (Gabriel Yared) Atonement (Dario Marianelli) Catch me if you can (John Williams) Knowing (Marco Beltrami) Sixth Sense & The Village (James Newton Howard) Wolf (Ennio Morricone) Panic Room (Howard Shore) The Reaping (John Frizzell) Passengers (Edward Shearmur) HARRY POTTER AND THE PHILOSOPHER’S STONE John Williams Let us first turn to one of the more recent and iconic movie franchises - Harry Potter . The first film was scored by John Williams and one of the most enduring motifs was ‘Hedwig’s Theme’ which is referenced numerous times in all the films in the series. The piece contains a heady mixture of childlike innocence and charm, together with slightly intimidating, frightening and menacing characteristics. Audio – ‘Hedwig’s Theme’ (Harry Potter) Fig.1 What unique characteristics does this music contain and how do they create exactly the right emotion within us? The first thing I have highlighted in the transcribed score is the 11 th and 9 th in bar three.

The magic of film music: A case study on how music enhances drama in contemporary Hollywood films Sibelius Academy Department of Music Education Master’s Thesis Spring 2005 Henri Wilkinson SIBELIUS ACADEMY : Master’s Thesis 9 Essay Title Pages The magic of film music: A case study on how music 83 + 15 enhances drama in contemporary Hollywood films Author Semester Henri Wilkinson Spring 2005 Degree programme Specialisation option Music Education Abstract The aim of this study is to analyze film music with special reference to contemporary Hollywood films and analyze the ways in which film scores are devised from a composer’s point of view, as well as to develop material for teaching and self-study purposes. I argue that existing music analysis methods are inadequate for studying music in the context of film, and I therefore establish a structured analysis method for the research. The research focuses on the scores of six films (“Gladiator”, “Star Wars: The Phantom Menace”, “Meet Joe Black”, “Monsters, inc.”, “The Matrix” and “K-PAX”) and studies them alongside the visuals and the narrative. The findings contribute to the knowledge of how and when music should complement the visuals and the drama, and of what really are the most common musical elements for achieving a harmony of music and drama. This study may provide future research in the field of film and multimedia music with an analysis method that, in addition to studying the music alone, takes into account the visual and narrative elements. • Walter Murch's the Rule Of
Walter Murch’s The Rule of Six What is the perfect cut from one shot to another? Anna Standertskjöld Degree Thesis Film and Media 2020 EXAMENSARBETE Arcada Utbildningsprogram: Film och media Identifikationsnummer: Författare: Anna Standertskjöld Arbetets namn: Walter Murch’s The Rule of Six - What is the perfect cut from one shot to another? In the Blink of an Eye: A Perspective on Film Editing. Denna regel kallar Murch för The Rule of Six.
