LOS ANGELES – Music is an integral part of filmmaking, moving the story and touching the audience. Where would iconic movies such as Star Wars, Avatar, The Godfather, or Gone with the Wind be without its music? Would Downton Abbey, Dexter, or House of Cards be the same and have audiences glued to their TVs without music? Would gamers love immerse into Final Fantasy or Legend of Zelda if they were silent? Movie music has moved us all to cheer, cry, and fall in love for more than 100 years. Yet the vast majority of composers hired to create this vital part of Hollywood’s cultural landscape have been men. Well, that musical glass ceiling is about to crack! • Transmediating Tim Burton's Gotham City
Transmediating Tim Burton’s Gotham City: Brand Convergence, Child Audiences, and Batman: The Animated Series MATTHEW FREEMAN, University of Nottingham ABSTRACT During the early 1990s, Batman, a highly valued media franchise, was an ever-expanding phenomenon, with franchise owner Warner Bros. having reinvigorated the property with Batman (Tim Burton, 1989). This article will examine the subsequent six-year period of its franchise production, using Batman as a case study for exploring the ways in which distinct versions of a fictional character – each constructed under different creative contexts with differing artistic sensibilities, aimed at varying groups of audiences across media – became the combined products of brand convergence across each media iteration, a concept that was crucial to the transmediality of Batman as both commercial brand and fictional storyworld. KEYWORDS Transmedia storytelling, media branding, franchise, merchandise, superhero characters. Introduction William Uricchio rightly acknowledges that ‘Gotham City as a brand is a highly valued asset not only of the Batman franchise, but of the larger corporate entities of DC Comics and Warner Bros’ (2010, 119). During the early 1990s, this Batman brand was an ever-expanding phenomenon, with franchise owner Warner Bros. having reinvigorated the property with Batman (Tim Burton, 1989). Batman Returns (Tim Burton, 1992), its sequel, was soon in development, and Warner Bros. would complement its theatrical release with a multitude of products in and across other media. Alongside the film was a series of video games, comic books and tie-in merchandise, each simultaneously promoting both Burton’s blockbuster film and the character’s latest television outing, Batman: The Animated Series (Warner Bros.

  • “Evocative Original Music” – LOS ANGELES TIMES
“Evocative original music” – LOS ANGELES TIMES A composer who brings to her music feverish imagination, impeccable musicianship, complexity, versatility, unbridled joy, and fearlessness, Emmy-award winning composer Laura Karpman’s rigorous musical approach, coupled with conceptual and progressive uses of technology and recording, is that of a true 21st century American composer. Named one of the most important women in Hollywood by Variety Magazine, she is one of a handful of female composers with an active career in film and television, winning four Emmys and receiving an additional seven nominations, an Annie Award nomination and two GANG awards and a nomination for her video game music. Karpman’s concert music is widely performed in major venues internationally, and her lifelong obsession with jazz (which began with memorizing Ella Fitzgerald’s scat solos at age 11) is embedded in her uniquely creative work. Recent and upcoming commissions include a new opera Wilde Tales for The Glimmerglass Festival, her new genre-breaking work Hidden World of Girls with the Kitchen Sisters for the Cabrillo Festival, the One Ten Project for the Los Angeles Opera, Different Lanes for string quartet and two iPads, a new opera Balls! about Billie Jean King/Bobby Riggs with New York Times columnist Gail Collins for The Industry in LA (and for which she received an Opera America female composer grant), plus works for the San Francisco Gay Men’s Chorus and Pacific Symphony. Karpman's ground-breaking, two-time Grammy-Award winning score for the multi- media evening ASK YOUR MAMA, featuring Jessye Norman, The Roots, jazz vocalist de’Adre Aziza, and George Manahan conducting, premiered with the Orchestra of St.

  • Horror Movie Genre in Order to Expose Any Commonalities, Consistencies, Structural Or Harmonic Similarities Or Significant and Communicative Compositional Approaches
How Film & TV Music Communicate – Vol.2 Text © Brian Morrell 2013 Chapter 4 H O R R O R This chapter analyses some key musical repertoire of the horror movie genre in order to expose any commonalities, consistencies, structural or harmonic similarities or significant and communicative compositional approaches. Music analysed includes: Final Destination (Shirley Walker) Predator (Alan Silvestri) Silence of the Lambs (Howard Shore) The Exorcist (Tubular Bells - Mike Oldfield) The Thing (John Carpenter) Wrong Turn (Elia Cmiral) Drag me to Hell (Christopher Young) A Nightmare on Elm Street (Charles Bernstein) Scream (Marco Beltrami) Poltergeist (Jerry Goldsmith) The Grudge (Christopher Young) Anaconda (Randy Edelman) Silence of the Lambs (Howard Shore) The Shining (Wendy Carlos) FINAL DESTINATION Shirley Walker Capitalizing on our morbid fear of death, Final Destination is a 2000 American supernatural horror movie (now franchise) about a group of teenagers who ‘cheat death’. A student on a plane which is about to take off has a premonition that the plane will crash after takeoff. He panics and leaves the plane with a group of others. Ultimately the plane does eventually crash. By saving himself and a handful of other passengers the main protagonist has altered the future, or ‘death’s design’. The group of teenagers continues to be stalked by ‘death’, which claims back their lives one by one. The idea of an invisible force killing its victims is not a new one, but the idea of ‘death’ having a design and a plan works well in a modern context. One of the main points which so enticed producers into making the film is that there is no physical figure – no monster or killer.

  • Frost Welcomes Giants of Many Musical Arenas
University of Miami • Spring 2012 INS IDE: Measuring Bandwidth Third Stream Bass-ic Inspiration scoreFROST SCHOOL OF MUSIC Soul with Trumpet teaching at Frost is infused with Sound the creative genius of four modern masters Message from the Dean As an undergraduate at the University of Houston in the 1970s, I served as president of the Music School Student Council. When the school consulted the council as part of its search for a new director, I said, “Please interview William F. Lee. He is the greatest and most innovative music dean in the country.” They did, though Dr. Lee had no intention of leaving Miami. Thus began a decades-long friendship between Bill Lee and me. We each served terms as president of the International Association for Jazz Education (IAJE), and during my tenure, the then-retired Lee was filling in as interim executive director. We traveled the world together, deepening our bond as musicians, educators, and friends. Bill Lee was a true renaissance man—brilliant and visionary. He was a performing musician who “gigged” his entire life, while leading music schools, helping to found the IAJE, and authoring dozens of books on a wide range of topics. Most importantly to the University of Miami, Bill Lee founded the modern Frost School, and former dean Bill Hipp and I have continued to build on that foundation. Lee’s passing in October of 2011 was a sad day for all who knew him. His insight and sense of humor will remain with us all. A William F. Lee Scholarship has been established at the Frost School so that his legacy can continue to enhance students’ lives.
