The festival promises, as always, a wide range of musical delight, spanning genres, styles and tastes, thanks to the heartfelt collaboration between the two host cities, Torino and Milano. Year after year they have worked together, promoting music as a universal language, in touch with the people, a cultural bond for all to identify with and embrace. For all of us, MITO SettembreMusica is proof that big cities working in tandem can produce innovation and spread knowledge and appreciation of our artistic and musical heritage, once the domain of a minority of elites, today accessible to everyone. But beyond the unquestioned merit of creating an altogether harmonious nexus between Milano and Torino, turning our beloved cities into music venues par excellence, MITO SettembreMusica has become a strategic international appointment for music makers and audiences alike. At this stage, MITO SettembreMusica has evolved into a powerfully dynamic cultural event, a prime example of how public and private interests can work hand in hand, stimulating civic support for the arts and partnerships that help make up for shrinking resources on the part of local administrations in a period of economic crisis. This year as well MITO offers a program of the highest quality. Audiences may rest assured that the variety and diversification they’ve come to expect will continue to be there for them. Careful planning has gone into the making of this amazing music festival, and music lovers on a grand scale will be treated to performance upon performance of the very best. Bravo MITO SettembreMusica! The festival will surely prove to be a magnet for concert-goers interested not only in music, but in all the wonders our cities have to offer - these great bastions of history, architecture, art and entertainment. Visitors may indulge in the transformations our cities have undergone over recent years, where investing in culture has created a prototype for continuing development in the most meaningful sense of the word. This Milano-Torino (or Torino-Milano, if you prefer) undertaking has evolved solidly, with spectacular results year after year, thanks to the loyalty of the local citizenry and the international prestige of this two-city celebration of music. While being one of Europe’s major music festivals, overall costs compared to other leading initiatives of the kind dwindle, even with half of MITO SettembreMusica’s performances boasting free admission. About half the funding for our festival comes from private sources. Entertainment, the fun and the joy of listening to music together, in an atmosphere void of snobbery and exclusivity, beyond the traditional bourgeois barriers, with ticket prices slashed to meet the needs of public demand – that’s all part of MITO SettembreMusica’s innovation and importance. These aspects are near and dear to us and we’ll duly defend them. But what’s even more crucial is our educational mission – in the most basic terms when it comes to planting the seeds of music in elementary, middle and high schools, and universities. Our music appreciation initiatives, talks with musicians, preparatory seminars in schools, our focus on children, even in the youngest age groups, our commitment to bringing music and musical culture beyond the city center – all this is as important to MITO SettembreMusica as the grand concert openings in Torino and Milano featuring the Orchestre National de France conducted by Daniele Gatti, performing pieces by Debussy and Ravel. Our effort is 100% attuned to the situation today in Italy, which faces an enormous need for rigor and spending cuts, while at the same time there is a glaring demand for the energy and optimism necessary for investing in our future. Musical culture, along with all of Italy’s cultural, educational and heritage-conservation institutions, will be fully part of the scenario that, depending on our capacities, sees us emerge all the stronger. But that salvation won’t come from public funding (which has dried up) of arthritic institutions mired in cost-heavy, non-competitive, often unproductive management of resources, which cater to appalling and by now unsustainable corporative indolence and incrustation. MITO SettembreMusica’s example in introducing a new, unencumbered direction in management that gathers and mobilizes private support is a lesson to be repeated and exploited, an opportunity to be seized upon by the musical institutions we work with, an experience which public administrations might aspire to for the development of new synergies, to increase contacts internationally, to boost tourism in both Torino and Milano. Such incipient forms of coordination may well become systematic and give life to permanent networks, a boon to MITO SettembreMusica benefits, creating further opportunities for the promotion of cultural initiatives. This might be based on the model provided by Germany’s “cultural secretariats”, which combine the efforts of cities that place a high priority on culture, such as the Musikland Niedersachsen in Hannover, or the Förderpreis für Musikvermittlung award for the promotion and diffusion of music on the regional level. In this vein, I’m delighted by the prospect of the mayors of Milano and Torino assuming a dual presidency of MITO SettembreMusica – leaving yours truly the tasks of vice president and head of the MITO SettembreMusica coordinating committee.
