This “Listener’s Guide” is meant to give you insight into Elektra’s season programming and to make the concert experience richer and more meaningful. I’ll be sharing my thoughts on the music we’re singing on May 4, 2019 in Vancouver and May 5 at ArtSpring on Salt Spring Island. Here you’ll also find poems and translations. My days are spent either making music or planning for it to be made, and sometimes I forget because I am so close to it what a privilege it is to be surrounded by the beauty of voices, notes, and words on a daily basis.Our May program celebrates the ineffable mystery of music both with brand new pieces and also arrangements of songs that may connect you to past experiences. It is a treat to welcome our special guest, Canadian soprano Suzie LeBlanc, CM. This is our first-ever collaboration with her, although she and I have known each other for a long time. The concert weaves together many of her passions - baroque music, Acadian music, and the poetry of Elizabeth Bishop. It stand to be a rare insight into a consummate performer who was recently made a member of the Order of Canada for "contributing to the development of early-period music and Acadian culture as a singer and teacher". -

NEWSLETTER of The American Handel Society Volume XIX, Number 1 April 2004 THE THOMAS BAKER COLLECTION In 1985 the Music Library of The University of Western Ontario acquired the bulk of the music collection of Thomas Baker (c.1708-1775) of Farnham, Surrey from the English antiquarian dealer Richard Macnutt with Burnett & Simeone. Earlier that same year what is presumed to have been the complete collection, then on deposit at the Hampshire Record Office in Winchester, was described by Richard Andrewes of Cambridge University Library in a "Catalogue of music in the Thomas Baker Collection." It contained 85 eighteenth-century printed titles (some bound together) and 10 "miscellaneous manuscripts." Macnutt described the portion of the collection he acquired in his catalogue The Music Collection of an Eighteenth Century Gentleman (Tunbridge Wells, 1985). Other buyers, including the British Library, acquired 11 of the printed titles and 4 of the manuscripts. Thomas Baker was a country gentleman and his library, which was "representative of the educated musical amateur’s tastes, include[d] works ranging from short keyboard pieces to opera" (Macnutt, i). Whether he was related to the Rev. Thomas Baker (1685-1745) who was for many years a member of the choirs of the Chapel Royal, St. Paul’s Cathedral, and Westminster Abbey, is not clear. TAMERLANO AT SPOLETO The portion of the Thomas Baker Collection now at The University of Western Ontario, consisting of 83 titles, is FESTIVAL USA 2003 admirably described on the Music Library’s website Composer Gian Carlo Menotti founded the Festival dei (http://www.lib.uwo.ca/music/baker.html) by Lisa Rae Due Mondi in 1958, locating it in the Umbrian hilltown of Philpott, Music Reference Librarian. -

Stiftung / Fondation Thiébaud-Frey MICHAELA MODJESKA PAETSCH, Konzertmeisterin VIOLINE Die aus Colorado Springs in den USA stammende Geigerin Michaela Paetsch studierte bei Szymon Goldberg an der Yale University Connecticut und am Curtis Institute of Music Philadelphia. Sie gewann den 1. Preis bei den Dealey-Awards in Dallas, die Bronzemedaille beim Concours Reine Elisabeth in Brüssel und 1986 beim Tschaikowsky-Wettbewerb in Moskau den einzigen Preis in der Sparte «Russische Kompositionen». Als Solistin reiste sie um die Welt mit dem BBC Symphony Orchestra, dem Hallé Orchestra, dem NHK Sinfonieorchester Tokio, sowie den großen Orchestern von Seoul, Amsterdam und Brüssel. Sie spielte unter Dirigenten wie Kent Nagano, Dmitrij Kitajenko, Howard Griffith, Horst Stein, Myung-Whun Chung und Sir Alexander Gibson. Michaela ist auch in der Schweiz eine bekannte Solistin. In zahlreichen Konzerten trat sie mit dem TOBS in Biel, Bern, Lugano, Genf, Luzern und Basel auf. Mit Kent Nagano und dem Halle Orchestra wurde sie für eine Migros Klubhaus Tournee eingeladen. Mit ihrem Mann, Klaus Neftel, und Prima Carezza trat sie für die Bundespräsidentin, Simonetta Sommaruga und den Ex-Präsidenten von Frankreich, François Hollande bei seinem offiziellen Besuch in Bern auf. Ebenso spielte sie in der letzten Show von Jörg Schneider, moderiert von Sandra Studer. Als Kammermusikerin ist Michaela Modjeska Paetsch eine gefragte Partnerin. Zahlreiche CD-Einspielungen runden ihre musikalische Karriere ab. VALENTINA SERENA PAETSCH VIOLINE Valentina Serena Paetsch, 1998 in Lugano geboren, trat bereits als 4-Jährige als Solistin mit dem «Corelli- Ensemble» ihrer Heimatstadt auf. Von 2014 bis 2017 studierte sie an der Musikschule Konservatorium Zürich bei Prof. Philip Draganov und begann im Oktober 2017 ihren Bachelor-Studiengang an der Universität der Künste Berlin in der Klasse von Prof.
