Population Size and Natural History of Mariana Fruit Bats
Population Size and Natural History ofMariana Fruit Bats (Chiroptera: Pteropodidae) on Sarigan, Mariana Islands1 Gary J. Wiles2,3 and Nathan C. Johnson4 Abstract: Based on count results, we estimated the population of Mariana fruit bats (Pteropus mariannus Desmarest) on Sarigan, Mariana Islands, to number 150-200 bats in 1999, 185-235 bats in 2000, and about 300-400 bats in 2001. Our results, plus those of two previous surveys, indicate that bat abundance on the island probably remained relatively stable at about 125-235 animals during much of the period from 1983 to 2000, then increased suddenly in 2001, most likely due to immigration from a neighboring island. Sarigan's population differs from those of larger islands in the archipelago by usually having smaller roost sizes, typically 3-75 bats, and large numbers of solitary bats that at times com prise up to half of the population. Colonies and smaller aggregations were composed primarily ofharems with multiple females, whereas a nearly equal sex ratio occurred among solitary animals. Colonies roosted in isolated coconut trees in open grasslands and in native forest stands ofvarious sizes, but avoided dense coconut forest. An estimated 30-50% of harem and solitary females pos sessed young in July 1999. Bats were recorded feeding on just six species of plants, which partly reflects the island's impoverished flora. We speculate that fruit bat abundance on Sarigan is limited primarily by food availability rather than hunting losses, in contrast to some other islands in the Marianas. Our study supports the contention that populations of P. mariannus in the northern Mar ianas are usually sedentary, but that interisland movements of larger numbers of bats may occur rarely. -

New Records of Bats from the Southern Kalahari Desert, Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park, South Africa Rick A. Adams1 and Gary Kwiecinski2 1 School of Biological Sciences, University of Northern Colorado, Greeley, USA; 2 Department of Biology, University of Scranton, Scranton, USA Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park stretches across northwestern South Africa eastward into Botswana. The park lies largely within the southern Kalahari Desert ecosystem where the dry river beds of the Auob and Nassob rivers reach confluence. Although these rivers run about once every 100 years, or shortly after large thunderstorms, underground flows and seeps provide consistent water for the parks sparse vegetation and diverse wildlife. No formal studies on bats at Kgalagadi Park have occurred, but molossids were known to occupying several of the chalets at tourist camps. -

Olesen Cover photograph: Dorte Nyhagen Introduction Why megabats? A brief explanation of my experiences with megabats. I first came across megabats when studying for my honours project at Aberdeen University under the supervision of Professor Paul Racey – an intimidating yet extremely likeable giant of the bat world. I was to study Pteropus rodricensis, the famed golden fruit bat, endemic to the island of Rodrigues; a tiny far-flung speck in the Indian Ocean, politically aligned with Mauritius. I had some idea of what to expect, but no firm plans of how to carry out my studies, relying instead on my confident ability to improvise. Upon arrival, the island presented itself as a catalogue of environmental short-sightedness and ecological collapse, yet the fruit bats clung on to their perilous existence, saved from extinction by the irregular topography of some parts of the island. In a near- vertical and densely vegetated gorge, the bats could roost in peace during the day, flying to their feeding sites each evening at dusk, their destinations presumably carefully planned the previous night. I quickly came to realise a number of problems inherently linked with the study of fruit-bats. Firstly, they’re nocturnal. This presents a whole host of difficulties, not least of which being the absence of daylight. Secondly, there was no way in which to access their roost site, and even if I could, my clumsy approach would disturb them. -

Racey Abstract Bat hunting for consumption as bushmeat and medicine is widespread and affects at least 167 species of bats (or c. 13 % of the world’s bat species), in Africa, Asia, across the islands of Oceania, and to a lesser extent in Central and South America. Hunting is particularly prevalent among the large-bodied fruit bats of the Old World tropics, where half (50 %, 92/183) the extant species in the family Pteropodidae are hunted. Pteropodids that are hunted are six times more likely to be Red Listed as threatened: 66 % of species in IUCN threatened categories (CR, EN, VU, NT), compared to 11 % of species in the ‘Least Concern’ (LC) category. However, there still appears to be an information gap at the international level. One third of the hunted species on the Red List are not considered threatened by that hunting, and nearly a quarter of the bat species included in this review are not listed as hunted in IUCN Red List species accounts. This review has resulted in a com- prehensive list of hunted bats that doubles the number of species known from either the IUCN Red List species accounts or a questionnaire circulated in 2004. More research is needed on the impacts of unregulated hunting, as well as on the sustain- ability of regulated hunting programs. Email: [email protected] 2C/O Mr. Sianjobo, Lusaka, Zambia Abstract We conducted a basic inventory of tree species composition, density and frequency, to establish baseline data on abundance and phenology of fruiting trees in the known fruit bats’ foraging areas. The study was carried out between November and December 2014 and January to February 2015, in Kasanka National Park and Kafinda Game Management Area. This area hosts one of the largest global concentrations of fruit bats estimated at ten million in one single locality every October – December/January and was therefore, found to be suitable for this study.Plot method using 20 m x 20 m square quadrats were set up inside the National Park and Kafinda Game Management Area. Each tree in the plot was identified and DBH taken at 1.3 m above ground. Tree height was determined using a tree height measuring rod and Haga Car Leiss altimeter. Identification of tree species was done by; i) direct observation, ii) use of a field guide, and iii) use of an experienced herbarium technician. Results obtained showed that there were 64 species of trees. Of these, 20 (approximately 30 %) were fruit trees, of which 16 (approximately 80 %) were available and accessible to fruit bats. -
