Bonnie Pacala Brereton Email: [email protected] This stunning book is superb in every way. Immediately obvious is the quality of the photographs of the British Library’s extensive collections; equally remarkable is the amount of information about the objects in the collections and how they relate to local histories, teachings, sacred sites and legends. Then there is the writing — clear and succinct, free from academic jargon and egoistic agendas. The authors state in the preface that through this book they wished to honor Dr. Henry Ginsburg, who worked for the British Library for 30 years, building up one of the finest collections of Thai illustrated manuscripts in the world before his untimely death in 2007. Dr. Ginsburg would surely be delighted at this magnificent way of paying tribute. The authors, San San May and Jana Ignunma, hold curatorial positions at the British Library, and thus are in close contact with the material they write about. In organizing a book that aims to highlight items in a museum’s or library’s collection, authors are faced with many choices. Should it be organized by date, theme, medium, provenance etc.? Here they have chosen to examine the items in terms of their relationship to the essential aspects of Theravada Buddhism as practiced in mainland Southeast Asia: the components of the Three Gems (the Buddha, Dhamma, and Sangha) and the concepts of Kamma (cause and effect) and Punna (merit). -

FROM LAṄKĀ TO LĀN NĀ: REGIONAL BHIKKHUNĪ IDENTITY AND TRANSNATIONAL BUDDHIST NETWORKS A Thesis Presented to the Faculty of the Graduate School of Cornell University In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Asian Studies by Claire Poggi Elliot August 2020 © 2020 Claire Poggi Elliot ABSTRACT In 1996 the first public ordination of Theravāda bhikkhunī took place in India, spurring the creation of the first new lineage of female Theravāda monastics in a millennium. Despite debates about their legitimacy, this new lineage spread quickly within Sri Lanka, and then to Thailand in 2001. Because ordaining women remains illegal in Thailand, new bhikkhunī fly to Sri Lanka for their upasampadā ritual, resulting in a strong and continuing international network. This does not mean, however, that the bhikkhunī movement is a homogeneous or entirely harmonious one. Using data gathered from ethnographic fieldwork, interviews, and publications by bhikkhunī in Sri Lanka and Thailand, I look specifically at how one of the largest Thai bhikkhunī communities, Nirotharam, centered in Chiang Mai, navigates their local and trans-local contexts. These bhikkhunī localize their practice in northern-Thai forms of Buddhist monasticism. This gains Nirotharam support from local northern monks, who use their patronage of the bhikkhunī as a form of criticism against the central Thai Sangha, though the women themselves vocally support the central Thai Sangha. This careful mediation between local and national support is further complicated by the Thai bhikkhunī's dependence on Sri Lankan monastics for ordinations. Nirotharam bhikkhunī are in constant communication with, and under surveillance by, Sri Lankan monastics thanks to modern technological developments. -

MEMORY OF THE WORLD REGISTER The Epigraphic Archives of Wat Pho (Thailand) Ref N° 2010-16 PART A – ESSENTIAL INFORMATION 1 SUMMARY The Epigraphic Archives of Wat Pho (Temple of the Bodhi Tree) in Bangkok is a unique collection of 1,431 stone inscriptions in Thai language and scripts made in 1831-1841 on both religious and secular subjects, representing a wide range of Thai knowledge of Asian and local roots of the time in the context of over five centuries of global exchanges in trade, politics and culture. It was a conscious effort by King Rama III and Thai scholars to preserve and make them visible to the public with the ultimate aim in general education on cultural heritage, diversity and civilizations. In most cases they are accompanied by illustrations such as drawings, paintings or sculptures. The inscriptions are in good condition and are seen by over one million international visitors to Bangkok every year. The knowledge related to Thai yoga has recently become widespread through devoted practitioners, schools, spas and wellness centres worldwide. The majority of this epigraphic collection was inscribed on the Asia/Pacific Memory of the World Register in 2008. Chinese Glass Paintings in Bangkok Monasteries A Thai Buddhist monastery, or wat วัด, serves as a dwelling place for monks, a site for ordination, chanting, teaching, and other Buddhist rituals and activities, sometimes funerary services and a place to enshrine the ashes of the cremated, as well as a place where living community members can gather to hear the teachings, honor their dead, participate in ceremonies, donate, and engage in other forms of merit-making. At minimum, the art and architecture of the monastery need only be conducive to such ends, though the tendencies of Thai art are anything but minimalistic. As Justin McDaniel remarks in his insightful treatment of contemporary Thai religious and visual culture, "Generally, in Thai Buddhism 'more is more'. Shrines... are sites of accretion." An aesthetic of abundance (udom sombun อุดมสมบูรณ์) is highly valued .1 In their more concrete manifestations, abundance and accretion can take the form of manifold ornaments and elaborations upon the otherwise basic and boxy architectural form of the image halls, the plethora of images and offerings that crowd a typical altar, or the complex and detailed composition of most mural paintings. But these principles of accretion and abundance are not limited only to the intricacy and horror vacui so characteristic of Thai art: they can also account for the presence of objects that, to eyes conditioned by the conventional categories of art history, might appear foreign, secular, or otherwise out of place (Figure 1). -
