Zusammen bilden die Unternehmen in den Kreisen Olpe, Siegen-Wittgenstein, Soest, Hochsauerland und dem Märkischen Kreis eine der bedeutendsten Industrieregionen Deutschlands. Kennzeichnendes Merkmal der heimischen Wirtschaft ist die klein- und mittelständisch geprägte Unternehmenskultur. Ihr Schwerpunkt liegt im verarbeitenden Gewerbe. Die Branchen Metallerzeugung und –bearbeitung, Herstellung von Metallerzeugnissen, Maschinen- und Anlagenbau sowie Elektrotechnik sind dabei dominierend. Diese Neuaufl age des „Überblick in Zahlen“ soll eine erste Orien- tierung über die wirtschaftlichen und strukturpolitischen Eckdaten des IHK-Bezirks Siegen ermöglichen. Neben Angaben zur heimischen Branchenstruktur fi nden sich auch Informationen zur Fläche und Bevölkerung, zum Arbeitsmarkt und Fachkräftenachwuchs, zur kon- junkturellen Lage, zur vorhandenen Kaufkraft sowie zu den kommu- nalen Hebesätzen der Gewerbesteuer und der Grundsteuer B.     Causes for Emigration From the German Counties of Wittgenstein Karl-Ernst Riedesel Editor's note: Karl-Ernst Riedesel (1934-1996) grew up in Wunderthausen and was educated at Marburg University. He lived in Bad Berleburg, the seat of the northern county of Wittgenstein, where he taught English and history at the Gymnasium (college preparatory school) there. This address was prepared for presentation to the Womelsdorf Family Association which visited Wittgenstein in 1985. It is reproduced here with the permission of his family. The Early Sixteenth Century The early 16th century was the transition period from the Middle Ages to the modern times. If you look at a map of Germany presenting this period, you will be very surprised; it seems to be a piece of patchwork, not a map with clear outlines of political developments. This colorful pattern, however, signifies that Germany had been partitioned into a great number of medium- sized, small or even tiny territories, which all claimed a high degree of independence. Contrary to the kings of England and France, the German Emperors had been unable during the late Middle Ages to develop their domain into a modern nation. Among the many small territories were also the two counties of Wittgenstein. The original Wittgenstein County had been divided between two branches of the Wittgenstein Counts. The castle and town of Laasphe remained the center of South Wittgenstein, and Berleburg became the center of a new county in the northerly region of Wittgenstein. Prior to this division, other important social changes had evolved in Wittgenstein. The medieval society had consisted of several clearly distinct classes of people.

This resulted in eleven consecutive posters, which when mounted side by side, create a %foot mural. The timeline exhibits and describes the millstones of physics in images and words. The timeline functions as a chronology, a work of art, a permanent open textbook, and a gigantic photo album covering a hundred years in the life of the community of physicists and the existence of the American Physical Society . Each of the eleven posters begins with a brief essay that places a major scientific achievement of the decade in its historical context. Large portraits of the essays’ subjects include youthful photographs of Marie Curie, Albert Einstein, and Richard Feynman among others, to help put a face on science. Below the essays, a total of over 130 individual discoveries and inventions, explained in dated text boxes with accompanying images, form the backbone of the timeline. For ease of comprehension, this wealth of material is organized into five color- coded story lines the stretch horizontally across the hundred years of the 20th century. The five story lines are: Cosmic Scale, relate the story of astrophysics and cosmology; Human Scale, refers to the physics of the more familiar distances from the global to the microscopic; Atomic Scale, focuses on the submicroscopic This report was prepared as an account of work sponsored by an agency of the United States Government.

Ein dicht ausgebautes Netz an Wanderwegen lädt zur aktiven Freizeitgestaltung und zur Erholung ein. 200 km Wanderwege ziehen sich durch die 11 Ortsteile. Seit dem 16. Jahrhundert erzählt die Legende, dass in der Nähe von Wilnsdorf der sagenumwobene Schmied „Wieland“ gelebt haben soll. Deshalb trug Wilnsdorf in alter Zeit auch den Namen „Wielandisdorf“. Zu den Sehenswürdigkeiten der Gemeinde Wilnsdorf zählen historische und teilweise denkmalgeschützte Gebäude wie der Förderturm im Ortsteil Niederdielfen, die Wassermühle in Niederdielfen, der eisenzeitliche Schmelzofen in Obersdorf, die in der Kapellenschule in Rinsdorf eingerichtete Heimatstube, eine alte Dorfschmiede im Ortsteil Wilden, das ehemalige Arrestgebäude in Wilnsdorf, die Doppelschiffkirche in Obersdorf und die Wallfahrts- stätte Eremitage am Klarissenkloster. In Wilnsdorf lädt das Volkskundliche Museum mit einer großen Bergbauausstellung zu einem Besuch ein. Außerdem findet zweimal im Jahr eine international anerkannte Grubenlampenausstellung in der Wilnsdorfer Festhalle statt. Eine durchgängige und sichere Markierung ist durch den Sauerländischen Gebirgs- verein (SGV) garantiert. Anreise: Mit der Deutschen Bahn nach Siegen und mit dem Bus weiter bis Wilnsdorf. Mit dem PKW erreicht man Wilnsdorf von der Autobahn A45 Dortmund-Frankfurt (Sauerlandlinie) Abfahrt Wilnsdorf.
