The company is believed to have taken the decision after indications in Japan that the automotive markets are not getting any better, Honda having recently announced a 56% drop in earnings in the last quarter, compared to 2008. Prior to that the company was looking at other options, such as selling the team on to someone else. This has now been axed and the company will simply close things down and settle all the necessary contractual commitments as quickly as possible. The news, if confirmed, will be another blow to the manufacturer power in F1 as it will be the third withdrawal by a major car company in 11 months, following in the footsteps of Honda and BMW. There are also doubts about the future of Renault's factory team. The news will also be a blow to the Formula One Teams' Association, although the members have learned that working together produces much better results than trying to take on the authorities alone. It also means that there are now just three manufacturers left: Ferrari, Mercedes and Renault, and engine supply from Cosworth will become essential to ensure there are sufficient engines to go around.

! The Ex-Adrea de Cesaris 1982 Alfa Romeo 182 Chassis No. N182/1 • A genuine Works ‘ground effect’ Alfa Romeo Grand Prix car, carrying arguably the most iconic of all racing liveries. • One of the first Formula 1 cars to utilise the strength advantages of a fully carbon fibre tub. • Driven to pole position at the 1982 Long Beach Grand Prix by Andrea de Cesaris. • In its current ownership for the last 15 years and the previous for 10 years before that. • Wonderfully original and a highly desirable and blue chip entry to the popular world of Historic F1. Alfa Romeo returned to Formula 1 in 1979 after a 28 year sabbatical with the 177 which was designed and built under Carlo Chiti at Autodelta. Soon the 177 was replaced with the much improved 179 which gained the backing of cigarette giant Marlboro. The 179 was developed over a period of three seasons, which included flashes of promise such as a pair of pole positions and Bruno Giacomelli and 2nd at the 1980 Australian Grand Prix. Hungry to push forward and in a bid to do better, Alfa Romeo gained the services of Ligier designer Gérard Ducarouge in 1981 and the 182 was bourn. T. + 44 (0)1285 831 488 E. [email protected] www.williamianson.com ! Ducarouge persuaded the Turinese team to embrace carbon fibre technology in the production of its 1982 chassis, the 182 and at the beginning of the 1982 season only Alfa Romeo and McLaren were capitalising on the advantages of using carbon fibre. The monocoque’s design was largely similar to the aluminium 179, but instead was constructed entirely in carbon fibre by Advanced Composites in Derby, England.

  • Who Is the Best Formula 1 Driver? an Economic Approach to Evaluating Talent
ECONOMIC ANALYSIS & POLICY, VOL. 39 NO. 3, DECEMBER 2009 Who Is The Best Formula 1 Driver? An Economic Approach to Evaluating Talent Reiner Eichenberger* and David Stadelmann Department of Economics, University Freiburg, CH-1700 Fribourg, Switzerland (Email: [email protected]) Abstract: Who is the best formula 1 driver? Until today it was impossible to answer this question because the observable performance of a driver depends both on his talent and the quality of his cars. In this paper, we for the first time separate driver talent from car quality by econometrically analyzing data covering 57 years of Formula 1 racing. Our estimates also control for the number of drivers finishing, technical breakdowns and many other variables that influence race results. While Michael Schumacher is often believed to be the best driver, he is overtaken by Juan Manuel Fangio and Jim Clark. I. INTRODUCTION Who is currently the best Formula 1 driver? Who was the best Formula 1 driver in history? And what about the Australian drivers? Many people are more interested in such questions than in the very important research puzzles commonly dealt with in economic journals. Fortunately, these questions can be answered thanks to the tools used by economists. A Formula 1 driver is fast, if he is talented and has a good car. Moreover, his racing success depends on a large number of additional factors. Individual success is determined to a large extent by factors such as the competitors’ talents and the quality of their cars, the number of competitors in a race, weather conditions during the race, and pure racing luck.
