Francis, 2001/2). June 1907: Brooklands Motor Circuit completed for Hugh & Ethel Locke King and first opened; construction work included diverting the River Wey in two places. Although the secondary use of the site as an aerodrome was not yet anticipated, the Brooklands Automobile Racing Club soon encouraged flying there by offering a £2,500 prize for the first powered flight around the Circuit by the end of 1907! February 1908: Colonel Lindsay Lloyd (Brooklands’ new Clerk of the Course) elected a member of the Aero Club of Great Britain. 29/06/1908: First known air photos of Brooklands taken from a hot air balloon – no sign of any existing route along the future Aerodrome Road (A/R) and the River Wey still meandered across the road’s future path although a footbridge(?) carried a rough track to Hollicks Farm (ref. -

The morning after the last committee meeting Helen and I flew down to Queenstown to start a 12 day road trip across the Deep South. We travelled around Queenstown, Arrowtown, Gore, Invercargill, Riverton, The Caitlins, then up to Dunedin. We visited lots of museums, saw sea-lions and the World’s Fastest Indian. After driving the Otago and Southland roads it’s now obvious to me why Veteran and Vintage vehicles are so popular down there. Miles of gently curving roads with hardly another car to be seen. I didn’t think of the Harbour Bridge once! So that’s the end of another year at the NSVCC and eleven more issues of Progress “out of the door”. At this stage it would be remiss of me not to thank all of those who have contributed to this publication. Particular thanks must go to Terry Costello, Bruce Skinner and Richard Bampton who without fail have contributed something to every edition. Apologies to Richard for refusing to publish his scurrilous article and photograph implying that all Fords would be better badged Holdens. 2020 has been a strange year but how lucky we are to be down here in the South Pacific well away from the ravages of Covid, free from the stresses of Brexit and the insanity of the US presidential elections. -

Norway, The Airship Venture, Blackwood's Magazine May,1933. p.627 In the summer of 1924 there was a small Vickers’ staff working in two offices in Westminster upon the design of an airship, later to be christened R 100. I joined the staff in a humble capacity about that time, knowing nothing of airships but with a smattering of mathematics and the craft of heavier than air. I served with this staff till the autumn of 1930, when it was widely dispersed in the shadow of the R 101 disaster. In It is not often that the Gods in Olympus call the bluff of mortal theorists. The controversy of capitalism versus state enterprise has been argued, tested and fought out in many ways in many countries, but surely the airship venture in this country will stand as one of the most curious determinations of this matter. "Come," said the Gods, after wading through a number of airship proposals, "We will try this ancient question once again. The Air Ministry at Cardington shall build an airship of a certain size and of a certain speed, and Vickers Limited, shall build another to the same contract specification. By this ingenious device we really shall find out which is the better principle, capitalism or state enterprise." The Gods are then turned to other matters for the next six years while the experiment germinated. I joined the capitalist ship. For 18 months we worked in Westminster and in the drawing office we had set up at Crayford in Kent, before construction was commenced. -

The entries in this guide are arranged by company name and include a history of each company, particularly its formation and that of subsidiaries together with mergers and take-overs. Brief details of the records, the relevant accession numbers and any limitations on access are given. Where the records have been listed this is indicated. A glossary of terms specific to the subject area is also included, together with an index. Background to the Collection The Museum's archive department began collecting records in the late 1960s and targeted a number of firms. Although many of the deposits were arranged through formal approaches by the Museum to companies, a significant number were offered by company staff: a significant example is the Supermarine archive (AC 70/4) including some 50,000 drawings, which would have been burnt had an employee not contacted the Museum. The collections seem to offer a bias towards certain types of record, notably drawings and production records, rather than financial records and board minutes. -

SOUTH AUSTRALIAN AVIATION MUSEUM SIGNIFICANT AVIATOR PROFILES CAPTAIN SIR ROSS MACPHERSON SMITH KBE MC DFC AFC b 4 December 1892, d 13 April 1922 LIEUTENANT SIR KEITH MACPHERSON SMITH KBE b 20 December 1890 d 19 December 1955 SERGEANT WALTER HENRY SHIERS AFM b 17 May 1889, d 2 June 1968 WARRANT OFFICER JAMES MALLETT BENNETT AFM b 14 January 1894, d 13 April 1922 These four men are bound together in history through their extraordinary achievement in 1919 when they flew Vickers Vimy G-EAOU from England to Australia in twenty-eight days to win the Australian Government’s £10,000 prize for the first Australians to do so in less than thirty days. Macpherson Smith early history The Smith brothers were of Scottish extraction, the first and second of three sons of Scottish-born Andrew Smith and his Western Australian wife Jessie, nee Macpherson. They were born in Adelaide: Keith on 20 December 1890 and Ross on 4 December 1892. The third son, Colin, died from wounds suffered at Passchendale in June 1917. Andrew Smith had emigrated to Australia from Scotland and in 1892, when Ross was three months old, the family moved to Mutooroo station, about 140 miles east of Burra in South Australia’s mid north. Andrew was made manager of the station in 1897 and it was there that the boys spent their early years before being sent to Queen’s School in Adelaide in 1902 as boarders. The family moved to Andrew Smith’s birthplace in Moffatt, Scotland in 1906 where the boys spent the next two years at Warriston School.
