The aim of this thesis is to explore, exegete and display the riches of the oracles of Balaam (Numbers 22-24) as they related to the broad history of Old Testament studies, and more particularly to Old Testament theology. The oracles of Balaam are a fitting corpus for such a task as they have long been regarded as both a test case for literary criticism and as the quintessence of Pentateuchal theology. The study begins with a survey of the employment of the oracles of Balaam as used at Qumran, and by Bar Kochba, the Church Fathers, and the Talmud. Possible references to Balaam in the Quran are also discussed. Since the oracles of Balaam have long been regarded as the test case for literary criticism, a rather thorough study is made of the reconstructions of the Balaam materials by a number of leading scholars, including Wellhausen, Lohr, Mowinckel, Burrows, Albright, von Pakozdy, and Eissfeldt.

When the calf grew, the man came to place the yoke upon it, and it used its strength to leap away and broke the yoke. --- Sifrei 13 The name Yeshurun is related to the word "Ashurenu," as in Numb. 24:17: What I behold will not be soon. It has to do with seeing, because Israel is the people which saw the glory of the Divine Presence at Sinai, which is alluded to elsewhere in our chapter. Even though they will eventually sin, their having seen the glory will ultimately bring them back. --- Rabbenu Bachya, 14th c. Yeshurun may come from the word "yashar," meaning straight or upright; this is what the Jewish people are supposed to be. --- Ibn Ezra, 12th c. Or perhaps Israel is called Yeshurun because they are named after Jacob, who followed the straight path of the middle way. --- Judah Loew of Prague (“Maharal”), 16th c. Yeshurun comes from the word "shirah," song, because this is the people who after crossing the sea, sang a song of praise to God when they were redeemed from slavery in Egypt. --- Midrash Zuta Song of Songs 1:1 The name Yeshurun denotes a higher level for Israel. So why does it appear here, in connection with the failings of the people? It suggests to us that even when the Jewish people are on a high level, when they deserve such praise, they become proud and overbearing, just as the verse suggests.

These readings detail the laws of the moadim or "appointed times" on the Jewish calendar for festive celebration of our bond with God; including the mitzvot of dwelling in the sukkah (branch-covered hut) and taking the "Four Kinds" on the festival of Sukkot; the offerings brought in the Holy Temple in Jerusalem on Sukkot, and the obligation to journey to the Holy Temple to "to see and be seen before the face of God" on the three annual pilgrimage festivals -- Passover, Shavuot and Sukkot. On Simchat Torah ("Rejoicing of the Torah") we conclude, and begin anew, the annual Torah- reading cycle. First we read the Torah section of Vezot Haberachah, which recounts the blessings that Moshe/Moses gave to each of the twelve tribes of Israel before his death. Echoing Ya’akov/Jacob's blessings to his twelve sons five generations earlier, Moshe assigns and empowers each tribe with its individual role within the community of Israel. Vezot Haberachah then relates how Moshe ascended Mount Nebo from whose summit he saw the Promised Land. "And Moshe the servant of God died there in the Land of Moab by the mouth of God... and no man knows his burial place to this day." The Torah concludes by attesting that "There arose not a prophet since in Israel like Moses, whom God knew face to face..
