Name: REID LANDEN MOREHOUSE Date of Degree: JULY, 2014 Title of Study: SPECIES DISTRIBUTIONS AND TRAIT-ENVIRONMENT CORRELATIONS: IMPLICATIONS FOR THE EVOLUTIONARY ECOLOGY OF CRAYFISH (DECAPODA: CAMBARIDAE) Major Field: ZOOLOGY Abstract: Crayfish occur on every continent, except for Antarctica and Africa excluding Madagascar, and are a very diverse group of freshwater crustaceans with over 600 species. Crayfish are keystone species, ecosystems engineers, and make up the majority of invertebrate biomass in the systems they inhabit. In Oklahoma, there are 30 known species from six genera, with representatives from the three general ecological morphs that are defined by their burrowing behavior (burrowing types). In the first chapter, I provide a general overview and a synthesis of the questions addressed in my dissertation. The second chapter provides an in-depth account of Oklahoma’s crayfish and their biology, including an illustrated dichotomous key for species identification, individual species descriptions with color photographs, and detailed distribution maps. This chapter provided the foundation for research on crayfish biology in my subsequent chapters. Specifically, my studies focused on the 27 epigean species of Oklahoma to address questions regarding the effects of climate change and land use on species distributions (Chapter 3), quantifying morphological variation among taxa to test of the role of evolutionary convergence among burrowing types (Chapter 4), and investigating whether and how trophic resource partitioning can mediate the coexistence of sympatric species (Chapter 5). In Chapter 3, my results suggested that different crayfish burrowing types were affected by distinct bioclimatic variables. Crayfish distributions, however, did not appear to be negatively affected by climate change, and habitat destruction is likely a driving factor in the decline of crayfish. Differences among burrowing types were also highlighted in Chapter 4, which indicated consistent morphological trait variation in species of the same burrowing type, irrespective of taxonomic affiliation, providing evidence for convergent evolution in crayfish morphology. Finally, in Chapter 5, stable isotope analyses indicated that some crayfish species pairs partition their food resources, but there is also evidence for overlap in dietary niches. Overall, my dissertation provides a foundation for the study of crayfish within Oklahoma and surrounding states and provides a basis of better understanding the evolutionary and ecological mechanisms that have lead to and contributed to maintaining crayfish diversity in North America. iv TABLE OF CONTENTS Chapter Page I. ECOLOGY AND LIFE HISTORIES OF CRUSTACEANS At elementary level, crustaceans are a class of primarily aquatic arthropods. The name crustacean is derived from the Latin words ‘crusta’ meaning hard shell. The class is large (about 26,000 known species) and includes a variety of aquatic animals such as shrimps, crabs, lobsters, barnacles, water fleas etc. Some crustaceans occur in the seas and freshwaters, some are semi-terrestrial. They are mostly free-living, but few are parasitic. The common names shrimps and prawns are used interchangeably but it has now been resolved at FAO Convention to call marine and brackish water forms shrimps and freshwater forms prawns. Technically, the prawns have pleura of 2nd abdominal segment overlapping with 1st and 3rd segments ventrally. But in shrimps, the somite of 2nd abdominal segment overlaps the 3rd somite. Before commercial importance of crustaceans could be appreciated, the characteristics and the relationships need be mentioned. Despite its contribution to world trade and the economy, this trade aquarium, also comprises one of the main pathways for the introduction of non- crustaceans, indigenous animals. In the past decade, crayfish has become a popular non-indigenous pet as well as a potential threat to the environment upon its escape or species, release. Since the Czech Republic is one of the world’s leading importer, price exporter, and producer of aquatic ornamental animals, we prepared a de- tailed analysis of crayfish imports. The present paper provides a complete list of countries supplying ornamental crayfish and examines trends of their prices and imported quantities during the past decade (2003–2012). Indonesia has been identified as the leading supplier in recent years. The annual average price of imported crayfish has varied over the evaluated period within the range of c0.76–4.72 per individual and it is rising annu- ally by c0.15. The quantity of live crayfish imported for aquarium purposes has not been affected significantly by the price per individual and it has grown rapidly. Therefore a constant monitoring of this pet trade sector is strongly recommended for the future.

[2] Cum vero adtenderem te non solum de vita communi omnium curam publicaeque rei constitutionem habere sed etiam de opportunitate publicorum aedificiorum, ut civitas per te non solum provinciis esset aucta, verum etiam ut maiestas imperii publicorum aedificiorum egregias haberet auctoritates, non putavi praetermittendum, quin primo quoque tempore de his rebus ea tibi ederem, ideo quod primum parenti tuo de eo fueram notus et eius virtutis studiosus. Cum autem concilium caelestium in sedibus immortalitatis eum dedicavisset et imperium parentis in tuam potestatem transtulisset, idem studium meum in eius memoria permanens in te contulit favorem. Itaque cum M. Aurelio et P. Minidio et Cn. Cornelio ad apparationem balistarum et scorpionem reliquorumque tormentorum refectionem fui praesto et cum eis commoda accepi, quae cum primo mihi tribuisiti recognitionem, per sorosis commendationem servasti.
