Nicholson ........... 236 I Preface Initiated by the Hoosier and Shawnee National Forests, this report is a scientific assessment of the characteristic composition, structure, and processes of ecosystems in the southern one-third of Illinois and Indiana and a small part of western Kentucky. Data and findings from the assessment should provide a helpful context for land and resource management planning on the two national forests; however, the assessment makes no management decisions or recommendations. The report is organized into nine chapters; the introduction and chapters addressing ecological sections and soils, water resources, forests, plants, aquatic animals, terres- trial wildlife, forest diseases and pests, and exotic animals. Parks Ave Nashville, TN 37243 20 July 2014 1 Introduction Crayfish are large aquatic invertebrates that have significant affects upon aquatic ecosystems and often comprise a large portion of an aquatic systems biomass (Taylor and Soucek 2010). Crayfish are good indicators of ecosystem health because they serve vital roles within aquatic systems, such as that of a primary consumer breaking down plants, woody debris and detritus into fine particulate organic matter (Parkyn and others 2001). In addition, crayfish can function as scavengers and predators of fish and invertebrates (Momot 1995; Taylor and Soucek 2010; Thomas and Taylor 2013). Finally, crayfish also have the capability to significantly alter their habitats via vegetation reduction and substrate disturbance (Momot 1995). The genus Barbicambarus was comprised of one known species, B. cornutus, until 2010 when B. simmonsi (Fig. 1) was described (Taylor and Schuster 2010). The crayfish in this genus are characterized by having densely setose antennae, a larger than average body size, and a strongly dorsoventrally flattened carapace (Taylor and Schuster 2010). B. cornutus can be found within the Green River basin in Kentucky and Tennessee and occurs most commonly under large flat boulders along creek margins where there is current (Taylor and Schuster 2004).

Despite its contribution to world trade and the economy, this trade aquarium, also comprises one of the main pathways for the introduction of non- crustaceans, indigenous animals. In the past decade, crayfish has become a popular non-indigenous pet as well as a potential threat to the environment upon its escape or species, release. Since the Czech Republic is one of the world’s leading importer, price exporter, and producer of aquatic ornamental animals, we prepared a de- tailed analysis of crayfish imports. The present paper provides a complete list of countries supplying ornamental crayfish and examines trends of their prices and imported quantities during the past decade (2003–2012). Indonesia has been identified as the leading supplier in recent years. The annual average price of imported crayfish has varied over the evaluated period within the range of c0.76–4.72 per individual and it is rising annu- ally by c0.15. The quantity of live crayfish imported for aquarium purposes has not been affected significantly by the price per individual and it has grown rapidly. Therefore a constant monitoring of this pet trade sector is strongly recommended for the future.

The trail going down the hill not far from the road has always been a problem. It's not a great design but we have no choice. Several years ago when the store ORATE SPONSOR changed ownership the previous owner did not want riders to ride the ITRA BRONZE NUGGET trail on his property anymore. Yvette worked hard to lease a right-a- CORPORATE SPONSOR way from another property owner. That's why the trail is where it is today. This year though, we made great progress. A volunteer brought his skid loader. With the additional help of driving and following excellent orders, they were able to remove all the mud which was every bit of a foot deep creating horrible footing for the horses. Once the mud was gone, fabric was put down. Then the ITRA TRAIL LEAD remaining rock that we had been using all the previous years was put CORPORATE SPONSOR down over the fabric although a lot more rock is needed.     2005 Indiana Forest Health Highlights The Resources The current and future forest health problems for Indiana forests involve native and exotic insects and diseases. The current forest health problem is tree mortality from the looper epidemic, forest tent caterpillar epidemic, pine bark beetles, oak wilt, Dutch Elm Disease, Ash Yellows and weather. Other impacts from these forest health problems are change in species diversity, altered wildlife habitat, growth loss and reduced timber value. What We Found Yellow-poplar is the most common species across Indiana today in terms of total live volume (fig. 1.7). Numerous other species, including ecologically and economically important hardwood species such as sugar maple, white oak, black oak, white ash, and northern red oak, contribute substantially to Indiana’s forest volume. In terms of total number of trees, sugar maple dominates, with more than twice as many trees as the next most abundant species (American elm) (fig. 1.8). Other common species include sassafras, flowering dog-wood, red maple, and black cherry. Overall, 80 individual tree species were recorded during the forest inventory. Although yellow-poplar and white oak is number one and three, respectively, in terms of total live volume across Indiana, they rank far lower in number of trees, indicating their large individual tree size compared with other species. The growing-stock volume of selected species has increased substantially since 1986, more than 100 per-cent in the case of yellow-poplar (fig. 1.9). However, black and white oak had volume increases of less than 20 percent during that period. Spiders are important generalist predators in agroecosystems, yet early season colonization is poorly understood, especially in northern regions. We investigated colonization patterns of spiders in agricultural fields after snow-melt in four cornfields in southwestern Quebec (Canada). Paired pitfall traps were associated with two drift fences to obtain data about immigration to and emigration from the fields and were placed at increasing distances from a deciduous forest border. Control traps were placed four meters inside the forest. Seventy-four species were collected, dominated by Linyphiidae and Lycosidae. Most of the fauna was already active during the first weeks of collection, and early season assemblages differed from late season assemblages. A significant ecotone effect was found for spider abundance, species richness and species composition. This study stresses the importance of early season spider activity in agroecosystems, and this context is relevant to a period of colonization by the dominant, active spider species. Executive Summary The Indiana Department of Natural Resources, Division of Fish and Wildlife (DFW) working with conservation partners across the state, developed a Comprehensive Wildlife Strategy (CWS) to protect and conserve habitats and associated wildlife at a landscape scale. Taking advantage of Congressional guidance and nationwide synergy Congress recognized the importance of partnerships and integrated conservation efforts, and charged each state and territory across the country to develop similar strategies. To facilitate future comparisons and cross-boundary cooperation, Congress required all 50 states and 6 U.S. territories to simultaneously address eight specific elements. Congress also directed that the strategies must identify and be focused on the “species in greatest need of conservation,” yet address the “full array of wildlife” and wildlife-related issues. Throughout the process, federal agencies and national organizations facilitated a fruitful ongoing discussion about how states across the country were addressing wildlife conservation. States were given latitude to develop strategies to best meet their particular needs. Congress gave each state the option of organizing its strategy by using a species-by-species approach or a habitat- based approach.
